Just curious what everyone’s process is. Today I was in a rush put 3 rounds down my 7 mag with the scope at 3 power. Shot off of two blankets on top of one another as a rest. Then fired 3 rounds out of my new 6.5 Saum. This rifle just got a scope on it today that came off my AR10. I redneck bore sighted it and took my shots at 2.5 power. 7 mag did 2.25 inches with 162 factory ELDX and 6.5 did 2.5 with Cooper Creek 140 Berger Elite Hunters. My 7 mag is trued Rem 700 with 24 inch Hart barrel. My 6.5 Saum is a Bighorn TL3 with 26 inch Proof CF barrel with Triggertech flat face at 2 lbs done by Short Action Customs. Then I dropped it in a KRG Bravo. I haven’t shot either rifle off of a proper bench or rest. What does everyone think?

I'm a little confused. You shot a 2.5" group at 100yds with a $3K+ new custom rifle? I would not be happy about that.

I do zero, shoot groups, and load Dev in the prone from bipod and bag. Because that's how I will more or less employ the rifle. I do load development and zero at 300yds now. Whatever my ballistic computer tells me for 300yd data from a 100yd zero is what I slip the turret to. Of course I'm using a 25x scope.
Well I was thrilled but I was thinking if I would have dialed my Magnification up and had a proper rest I would think I could be under MOA.

You did not post pics of your rig so I can't drool so sad . are you just trying to hit the target how are you seeing your shots at 100 yards at only 3xs mag ? at 100 - 600 once I know I am on target and trying for groups I am zoomed in most times less , other times 50xs as long as I can see the targets and the shoots clearly why not .

It's your money and your rifle so if you're happy that's all that matters. But I would think the rifle is capable of better if you want more.
My bad I meant to say I wasn’t thrilled. I’m going to shoot it again soon. My Armageddon gear bag just came in so I’ll have that next time. And I’ll shoot on more than 2 power.

well it was more a question I though you could see at 3xs i can't thought maybe you could .I am still wondering how so many say they only use 16x to shoot 1000 yards I am guessing its just to hit the target not see the shoot group . I also still do not own a spotting scope yet. have not needed on to this point as I can and have been seeing the shots out to 500 yards on paper pretty well so far our range only goes out to 600 yards.

You’re not gonna see the group at 1000 with 25x unless it’s an extreme contrasting background like just painted white steel.

Even then, the atmospherics (mirage, etc) would have to be perfect.

My buddy uses 16x to shoot a mile.
He can’t use it all that well to spot my little 6.5 bullets at that distance though.

My 4.5x29 can see hits(and misses)quite well.
Usually we get pretty awesome visual conditions at that spot being near the Pacific Ocean in Oregon.

I'm a member at 2 ranges that are set-up pretty different. I'll shoot for groups at one range off of a bench at paper targets. I typically just focus at 100 yards and 400 yards at this first range, shooting from a bench either off bipod or front rest and rear bag/support. Once I feel I'm 'dialed in', I'll go to the second range that has steel targets out to 1,400 yards. At this second range, I shoot from the prone with rear bag and also practice positional shooting off of props, tripods, etc.

I used to use 16x shooting f class (not competition, just the targets) and at 1000 I could see the x ring just fine if mirage was cooperating. Shots were marked for me of course. I mostly shoot at a steel range now and with my 20x42 SWFA SS mounted on my .308 RPR I can just make out my group at 1000 if the plates have been freshly painted. If I were competing I would be using much more power, but variable so I could dial it down for bad mirage. I use the same scope at 100 if I wanna shoot groups for some reason. 20x is a bit much there but works fine if you can keep the rifle very stable. I just use a Harris up front and squeeze bag in the rear.

My Vortex can make out groups on white-painted steel at 1k, even with a fair amount of mirage. Unless it's perfect conditions, seeing anything other than dark splotches at much past that is tough. But that's with my 300. With my 6mm it's a little tougher :)

On paper targets - even Shoot n' See, Splatterburst, etc. - with mirage, I can sort of see hits at like 4-500, but it's tough to make out much detail. That's why I just bought a target camera.

I think I found a place I can get out to a mile and I'm going to go scout it this weekend. Camera is coming along for its inaugural outing.
