I have a Rem 700 varmint 1/12 twist i have been shooting
Sierra .308 175 smk. shoots really good to 1000yds, last weekend shot out to 1120yds and was pretty much hit or miss can i shoot any heavier bullets with my 26 inch 1/12 barrel?
I am saving up to get a 300WM but for now i would like to continue push my 308.

Thanks James

A typical hot, but sane, load with 175s will go transonic between 1050-1075 yards (MV = 2650 fps) at sea level std atmospheric conditions.

You can get another 50-70 yards with high BC 155s, loaded right to the edge of sane pressures (MV = 2950).

A 1:12 is not recommended for the 208s.

Try it.

A fellow at my club uses the 208 in his 1:12 308 with great success. 750ft ASL, typical DA of between 1500 and 4000ft. No issues.

Re: Sierra 175 smk

Try the Berger 185 LRBT probably the highest BC bullet you can shoot out of the 1:12.

Berger even suggests you can use a 11 twist with their 210. 208s surely work in Shane's 12 twist rifle.

Re: Sierra 175 smk

Nope and I stand corrected. Why I said "probably" as I wasn't sure about the 208 or some of the other heavies.

Re: Sierra 175 smk

I have the same rifle and love it. Even better with the 175 SMK. Been using the 168 for a while, but switching over to the 175.

Re: Sierra 175 smk

208 is questionable in a 1:12. It worked for Montana Marine, but he was also shooting at over 4,500 ft. Shoot that at 300 ft above sea level (where I tend to shoot) and at saner velocities, and it is a little closer to the bleeding edge on a 1:12. MM was also using RL 17, which yields higher velocities, much like 2000-MR, but it might not yield great accuracy.

Using normal powders at lower altitudes, 208 grainers are pushing it at 1:12", which is why I really like 1:11.25" and I feel like there is no need for a 1:10", even though that is what I am running.
