is it worth buying a stiller action, as oppose to truing a remy action and reworking it? does the stiller really perform as well as a worked up remy action? or is it better to start w the stiller and have that trued and a barrel mounted? in this case i am have a custom rifle built, and was going to buy the remy to gut for the donor action, and for a fairly cheap price i am being offered the stiller instead. I am not experienced in gunsmithing at all, so i figured I'd ask the experts. so have at it gents.

Re: stiller action

Stiller is good stuff! If you don't have an action, buy the Stiller. It should be pretty much ready to build on right out of the box. A Remington can surely be made better, but it will never be a Stiller.

Re: stiller action

Jerry's been making my action for almost four years now and I can say without reservation wheter it's my version or SPF's there is a difference between them and a Remington. You can't make a silk purse out of sows ear no matter how much money you spend on the remodeling.

Re: stiller action

If you already have the Remington action, you're better off having it properly trued and building on it. There are quite a few options that you can exercise when using your Remington action and afterwards, it will perform as well as the Stiller. If you were starting the build without having the Remington, going the custom action route makes good sense.

Re: stiller action

If you already have the Rem then true it. If you have to go buy one go with the Stiller. No truing on the Stiller is needed. I've been looking at the numbers for it, and even when I'm doing all the work myself it's not worth it for me to go from a Rem action if I have to go find a new rifle to strip down. I'll be on the phone to Jerry this next week ordering another for my next build.

i agree with mike. if you are starting from scratch and want all the features such as a fluted bolt, sako or m16 style extractor, threaded bolt handle and side bolt release, then the stiller makes a lot of sense financially. if you already have a remington action and don't need all the bling features, a trued 700 will have the same results on target.

personally, since i do my work myself, for now on, i will probably stick to a trued remington action and add a side bolt release. there are features on the stiller (and many aftermarket actions) that i don't see necessary such as a fluted bolt and sako or m16 style extractor.

Re: stiller action

I've got 5 Stiller based rifles, from 204ruger to 375 cheytac, and they all shoot,

heres my 300 WM it shoots in the .1s consistently. Shilen barrel Stiller Tac 300

Re: stiller action

I have a TAC 300 on order. I spent almost a year trying to decide on custom actions thinking about quality, features and value and I kept going back to the Stiller. I have a Lawton 7000. Very nice action. I can't wait to compare the two.

Re: stiller action

Even if you have the Rem 700, you paid for it at some point in time. By the time you get it trued, new extractor, fluted bolt, etc., you will have almost as much in it as a new Stiller or other custom action. BUT you will have a Remington action that will only sell for about half what the Stiller will bring used. Same with the finished rifle, same rifle with Stiller action will bring a lot more than with a Rem action.

Re: stiller action

can anyone recommend ammo for the tac 300? have any good experiences w a certain brand/weight ammo? maybe a patters that stillers like certain ammo better than others? like my FN eats federal GMM 168 all day, but my Winchester likes Hornaday match 168 way better than federal gmm.

I agree. I have a Stiller TAC30, shoots like a dream. It basically comes down to what shows up on paper. My Stillers, Lawton 7000s, and Surgeons, as well as trued Rems I have all are gnat killers. Resale is......... (insert opinion).
