You might want to try and track down a Dan Wesson Pointman 9. And after that, do whatever you have to do to get on Steve Morrison's waiting list (when it opens again) and have him make you something magical. That is not hyperbole.
If price isnt an option buy a Wilson Combat.
I Have a TRP operator. While i love the gun i dont think I would carry it. It fails to lock the slide open on the last round very frequently.
I have never had any problems out of any glocks tho! 1911's are very smooth shooters.

I shot a buddies double star 1911 - I've had a couple kimbers but I would have traded any of them for the double star. I think the main guy building them left so I'm not sure if they are of the same quality as they use to be.
you should have made the road trip! you could have fingered some 25k shotguns and shoot any thing that was used (shotgun that is).
After an intensive (and agonizing) amount of research, I finally arrived at the conclusion it was time to step away from my 27yr affair with the Browning Hi-Power.
I'm still a single-action man, so there was a limited venue of pistols I was willing to choose from. After handling both the S&W 1911 Pro 9mm and the STI Sentry at a LGS, the S&W 1911 Pro won out.
I bought mine off a Gunbroker aucton. The former owner shot just 200rds through it. (Meaning he did the breakin for the next buyer.
) It came with the papers, box & four magazines. Transfer was through a local FFL.The first time I shot it the range. . . . HOLY SMITH & WESSON, BATMAN!! IS THAT A LASER-GUIDED PISTOL, OR IS IT JUST THAT GOOD??
I'm not IDPA or IPSC, but I did a personal best for my 1st time out of the gate with an unfamiliar pistol. Yup, it's just that good of a gun.
Impressions:
Despite some Internet chatter to the contrary, the Wilson Combat ETM 9 mm ten round magazines run flawlessly. I can insert all four of my mags full on a closed slide, so that meant 10+1 works.
Trigger breaks like a glass rod. I don't have a gauge, so I can't give you a number. I do know however, it's better than my Springfield EMP 9mm.
No failures of any kind, with Federal 115gr FMJ, or my reloads. My reloads were throwing 115gr Hornady XTP, 1.250 OAL, 6.0grs Unique. The S&W just soaked up the recoil, the target reacquisition was fast, and the accuracy was the best ever for my reloads.
In conclusion, I am very happy with the S&W 1911 Pro 9mm. I do not intend to change anything but possibly a fiber optic front sight. I would recommend this model be on anyone's short list for an accurate 9mm in the 1911 design.

I concur with the Colt. I was issued a 1911 in the military - was an okay shooter, definitely rough. It was, like most Army weapons, seen a lot of wear, abuse, typical bad weather and tough environmental conditions. But it did shoot under all those conditions. But, when I bought my Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match - that was like a piece of smooth moving art with a boom. The slide pulled back like butter, firm and quiet, not clunky like my service weapon. The slide didn't have that wiggle feel to it either. The match adjustable match sights meant I could actually sight in the target perfectly without making that pesky correction, because the fixed sights were just a little off for point of impact. The trigger, was like an experienced porn star stroking back on my trigger finger. I was addicted for life after taking my first shot at the range. It was just a really nice solid and reliable shooter with accuracy well beyond my 1911 service pistol.
Interestingly, I recently had a similar experience at my local gun store handling a Wilson Combat CQB, Ed Brown, and a Kimber. All seemed to take the 1911 to another another sensory level, and in the case of the Wilson, is guaranteed to shoot 1" at 25 yards. For unsupported normal shooting I can't shoot that well, and having a pistol that will always shoot better than me is both a comfort and a reminder that I need to spend more time shooting and less time shopping or talking.
Perhaps one day I may rid myself of lesser guns and treat myself to just one of these insanely priced and well crafted pieces of martial art.

I started my 1911 shooting with a Springfield TRP Operator. Fantastic gun and everything you want all in one package right from the factory. Awesome shooting, super smooth, bank vault lock up tight and super accurate. Mine had the 1/2 rail. I recently sold it and am somewhat regretting letting it go. With that said I now have 3 Wilson Combat 1911's and a 4th being built. My Tactical Elite is my nightstand gun. You can say the 1911 bug has bitten me.
With the price range you are talking about you can certainly find a nice 1911 if you take your time. Look in the forums for a used one that has most of what you want. I agree with most of the other posts in looking towards a Les Baer, TRP or a higher end Sig (some people can't get over their external extractor).

Love 1911's!!! I don't buy anymore I build as to get excatly what I want but if you are looking for comp/carry I would look at the Dawson Percision tuned STI DAWSON CRP STI TROJAN 45 5" Competition Ready Pistol Right Out Of The Box! Detail Page
A very good deal that fits in your budget. But I have to agree with the Les Baer for a few dollars more. Or better yet save up another grand and get one built.

I've owned 3 1911s and liked em but I don't understand 1 thing... Apparently you're supposed to take out a loan to get 1 worth a shit. If its not a custom that costs a fortune then it couldn't possibly be reliable enough to shoot cans with let alone keep on the night stand. Let the prudes have em. I've grown quite fond of my revolvers anyway.
since i started this thread, i already had my remington R1. i acquired a nighthawk AAC, a TRP, and a '44 remington rand (it was buffed and reblued in the 60s, but there are no arsenal rework proof marks on it. i have not shot it yet, but plan to.)
of the 3 modern 1911s, i go for the remington R1 everytime. call me crazy, but the cheapest, crappiest (according to the experts on the interweb) is my favorite. so i hear ya there derfarhar.
I have had two Colts, a Remington, a Taurus, and now a Kimber . The Colt was nice but I like the Kimber best. The Taurus was loose and heavy, a PT1911. It was stainless with a light rail, weighed in at 3lbs loaded. The Remington just didn't cut it had issues but after a call to Remington the were friendly, helpful and took care of me.
I have a Springfield Loaded Operator. I paid $1000 for it over 10 years ago. Wouldn't sell or trade it ever.

Like so many things with this forum I can't keep up with most of you guys but I too have joined the club! Sig Scorpion 1911 Carry!!!! I'm a decent shot with a pistol but by no means would I consider myself good. But damn if I didn't feel like a pro the other day knocking a 3" piece of steel 7 out of 8 rounds from 30 yards. Holy Sh!t I'm sold!
The 1911 was one of the first handguns I owned. I've owned and shot many other types but always went back to the 1911. Always found it to be the best in ergonomics and accuracy but a little more high maintenance compared to a Glock.
Some groups I shot with a Les Baer standing off-hand at 15 yards. This is with factory Federal Champion 230gr ammo.

I have Kimber, Sig two, Springfield custom by Biley gun works Houston, TX barrel. bushing, trigger job, target sights Wilson Combat professional model They all are great but I like my Springfield for shooting the best. 1500.00 will get you a good 1911 I like the idea of wanting and put another 3 to 5 hundred get a Les Bear or you will find a custom in that range I have seen them on here for sell. go check on the back treads in guns for sell. Good Luck with your purchase. Or run like Hell save your money pistols are as bad as rifles.

You asked is there are 9mm versions. Yes I have an SW pro 9mm and it is dead nuts accurate. Parts come from the custom shop but it is assembled on the production line.
You asked why is the trp a favorite. Not sure about every trp, there are a few models, but mine which is newer has serial numbers on all parts. It is hand built in limited runs in the custom shop. It is so tight I am surprised the gun runs. Accurate, ohh ya and It runs like a freaking raped ape man. Soooooo accurate.
Here is the rarest of them, full rail, operator tactical model, oversize ambi safety, with bull barrel and match trigger and fiber optic sights with adjustable target rear and sandpaper grips and deep serrations. First 10 times I shot it it made my hands raw, the traction is crazy.
This one is going in the grave with me. Pure man shit right there. I don't care who you are, or what you opinions are, this is in fact the most bad ass 1911. No ladies, light weight, short barrel, convenient, polished carry piece here. This is intended for serious use and not being a safe queen. I freaking hate fixed sights, different ammo, just turn a screw and aim dead nuts.
My local high end range has Weston's yada yada yada, they are all ok, sights suck and you have to offset with different ammo and ranges. Imagine a rifle with no wind age and elevation. Even the regular TRP is not the same as this bad bitch. I shot them all, I can buy any one I want, once I got this the Wesson's and Browns that were on my list simply fell off. Why bother.

Got a Colt pre series 70 Gold Cup national Match Trophy LNIB with ivory grips (my favorite but never shot), a tricked out series 80 national match, an old Colt commercial from the early 30's in really nice shape, a Government Issue 1911 (not A1) from around 1917, also in really nice shape, a Colt 1911 parts gun on a Springfield frame, Kimber Eclipse Target, and a Hardballer Longslide.
Shoot the series 80, longslide and Kimber all the time. Really want a nice factory nickel Colt and a 38 super Colt. Wouldn't mind a Delta Gold Cup either.
Love the 1911. A lot can be said about the 1911 given that everyone is now making them. Just Sayin'...
