It all depends on which real world you want to be in?!?!
I mean, you aren't going to be taking down bear with a subsonic load fired from 3ft away, much less any reasonable distance. They just don't have the juice for larger game. Most commercially available subsonic 308 loads hover around the 1,000fps mark (some get up to 1050fps or so) and generate only around 500ft/lbs of muzzle energy if that (it all depends on which projectile is used from 160gr to 200gr+). With a 100yd zero shooting 185gr subs out of a 20" barreled bolt action, I needed roughly 18MOA of elevation to get out to 200yds and by 250yds I was looking at close to 28MOA. I ran the numbers through my ballistics program and got readings of only (rounding) 360ft/lbs at 100yds, 325ft/lbs at 200yds and less than 300ft/lbs by the time I got to 250yds.
Like folks have already said, they make great critter-gitters within 200yds or so in areas where use of supersonic/full power loads aren't practical or advisable. Some of the loads I have used are nearing Hollywood quiet with a can and achieve decent accuracy out to 200yds or so (you can hold pie-plate accuracy at those ranges in decent conditions). Without a can...I really couldn't say how useful or practical they'll be to you. Again...it all depends on what you want to do with them.
Good luck!
BTW...in your sig line..."Koch" is actually pronounced "Coke" so your rhyme is a little off the mark. </div></div>
I wouldn't get too caught up in ft/lb figures. I've seen a lot of deer knocked over with 40 grainers at 1000-1400 fps. Less than 100 ft/lb of energy.
Subsonics are good for removing problems when you don't want to make a lot of noise.
