anyone here tried loading a lapua d46 backwards for subsonic shooting? I am gonna go try it. Shoot it with out my suppressor and make sure it will be stable out to 100 yards then hope nothing bad happens. Using trail boss powder in a 308 case.

Thanks dave. I tried the d46 loaded backwards. In an 11.25 twist barrel is wasn't to good. Never tried them through the suppressor. At 100 groups had to be shoot in the dirt to see were they hit. 4 feet group, maybe. The bullets recovered had side impacts and such. Kinda looked like they were turning around. Had one at 50 yards that went through the paper sideways. Scrap that idea. I may try them loaded as intended to see how they do. 175 SMK would shoot at least 2 moa, maybe 1 moa at 100 yards. Expansion on coyotes is the problem. Figured I would give it a shoot since I had them laying around.

If you are wanting expansion, accurate, available plus less expensive, I would highly recommend you check out the Hornady 170gr FP part #3060 or 180gr RN part #3075, now these are 30-30 bullets however they have thinner exterior cooper jackets, softer interior lead cores and are designed to go SLOW from the get go. Loading these with Trailboss powder and obtaining .75 - 1.5 moa across the board depending on mostly weather. The slow twist barrels are also more finicky compared to the 1/10" as well so load development is critical of course, hope this helps.

Thanks Stacey, I was planning on going that route at some point. Had the D46 laying around with no real plan for them. Tried it and it didn't work. I think I may look into the bullets you suggest and pick some up if I run across them. A super quite 308 is just too fun at times

Understand, I have a few myself, probably closer to 1500 or more. I learned they are good "Target" bullets, shoot mostly ok, some guns liked them others didn't. They hit steel and paper well, thats it mostly. Enjoy and agree the .308 sub's will make you forget the .22lr's, have a great weekend.
