I'm smokingone of SB's cigars tonight, a Drew Estate Natural - right after a fine chicken dinner, with a Canadian Schleeman Wheat & Honey ale.

Man, nice weather, got my baby here with me, and a good cigar..

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I too vote SB's re-entry into the cigar game! His recommendations for good smokes have never been wrong. Camacho Triple Maduros are still my fave.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Scott, you have to be getting to the bottom row of that box by now man! That makes those cigars something like 6 years old or so!

Shanks, I don't know Josh more than any of my other customers, most of whom I have spoken with one time or another. I do know a few a lot better than that. Arctic I have known since, uh, like 2002 or 2003 when he was my source of loaded match ammo before I had the ability to do that for myself, way back when I got my PSS and found out what a true dillitante I was at Long Range shooting.
When I get the time after I finish all the VA stuff I will get the business stuff done. It requires a day long briefing in Nashville mid week usually and they only come around once a quarter.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I have VA appointments lined up until November right now, sometimes two or three a week. 50% and climbing as of the this week. They are even thinking of bumping that up for my head injury.

N-Ville has very specific ways of dealing with tobacco taxes here. Yes, they are light weight in comparison to NY, doing business is much easier, but they want stuff done their way, no mail it in. They want a face to face

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I think you should at least do some cigar reviews every week. You can start with that Limitado IV. Nothing like making the members salivate for some good sticks

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

WHAT??!?!?!?! Dude....NOW who am I going to get my smokes from? Im down to about 25 or so of the Camacho's, Natural's, and Warlords....Love those Jucy's too....only have like 4 left.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Ya on the Drew Estates getting a tad low - I keep them in a humidor though....

That friggin beer tho - blah - fortified I think - got a damn headache this morning form ONE beer....

Course haven't drank a lot lately...

Switch - if they don't let you sell mail - MOVE!!!

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Scott, mail order is no big deal. There is a weee little coffee bean, pipe and cigar shop down the street that sends a little mail order to a very small group of people(his entire shop has never come close to the level of business Distorted was doing). Since he own's the property outright his overhead is very low(power, supply, operational) so he is basically doing the same thing I was, but with much lower sales volume.

The major issue here is that the tax folks at state want to know each and every seller in person. I think it's a good way to do business and it would be easy to get to these briefs, however, other priorities have to be dealt with on my end first.
My goal is to make Distorted a full shop later on so I want to insure I do everything correctly and do not piss anyone off.

La Flor Dominicana Limitado IV

This cigar had a very smooth and even construction. It's dark wrapper had a few light veins with a slight oiliness. Prelight was smooth with a slight pepperiness, a little earth, and a very light wood.
Upon lighting, the draw was even and smooth. Notes of dark chocolate, toffee, and espresso were highlighted. A light pepper was noted and mellowed after the first inch. This cigar burned evenly to the nub. The higlight flavors were noted throughout.
Strength was light for a ligero blend, and the cigar had a nice medium body to start with and became slightly fuller at halfway.
These cigars run about $10 a stick online if you can find them. Since they are a newly released smoke, they will be high on anyone's demand list. I would suggest buying a five pack, smoking one with a friend, then letting the rest sit for about three months before revisiting them.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

The La Flor Dominicana El Museo is a very limited release. No more than 2,000 boxes were released at $600 each. Single Cigar price is around the $30 mark.
The wrapper is a very nice even dark mocha color. Very light veins and a triple cap. The wrapper was very oily and smooth, a characteristic of a very class offering.
Pre Light draw was very smooth and even. Notes of sweet tobacco, and a light spiciness with a touch of nutmeg. Upon lighting the draw opened up and was instantly smooth.
This medium bodied smoke was extremely smooth. Taste notes were earthy, a little leather, and a nice floral highlight with a slight note of sage once in a while. The finish was of a nicely sweet tobacco, a little toast, and a slight thickness of floral highlight. It paired very well the Mitcher's Small Batch.
Company of course made this cigar so much the better, especially after a meal of decadent meat and bacon

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I've become a huge fan of LFDs. I smoke a couple every week, usually the double ligeros. Full bodied, but smooth. I'm going to have to check out that Limitado!

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Just got a box of La Unica 400's. Great little light, fairly inexpensive stick. Also have a couple of my fav's. Cohiba black, Partagas black, RP Vintage 92. I have a CAO Sapprano Churchill I've been saving for about two years. getting ready to order another box of Kuba's and a box of Perdomo Lot 23's.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I cant wait to light up my Cuban....cant remember what it is at the moment but I got some when I was overseas in like 2000 or 2001.....I gave a couple to my Dad and he held on to just one! Unfortunately he didnt keep it in a humidor....BUT there were no signs of mold, it just dried out completely. Its been sitting in the Humidor you got for me a while back for about 5-6 months now....Im thinking its going to get lit probably around New Years if its rebounded....

Its a good thing that Humidor has a lock on it though.....if I know Im tipping some drinks back with the guys I take out the ones that are going to be smoked for the night and lock the thing....of course handing the key to the ol' Lady so I dont smoke all the good ones! The self control just isnt there after a few!!

Hell I was thinking about it....the last time I ordered from you was about a year and a half ago....although I did get like 50 cigars from ya for the youngest being born, I was supposed to hand them out but I got stingy! HAHA

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Thanks for the review Switch...I got some of the Limitado IV a little while back and put the rest to sleep for a little while. Very good stick as you said especially for the price. I've been collecting since 2000 and Im glad to hear always someone else's opinion. I am a Gurkha fan and have about 200 of numerous batches and blends sleeping right now in addition to everything else (only about 1200 total). I certainly look forward always to hearing more

Modern (last few decades) Cuban cigars I've heard are generally pretty shetty. When the ability to trade with the U.S. was lost so was their attention to quality as the bottom of the market fell out. I don't know from experience, just relaying info I've heard.

Can't say I agree with that all the time. I was out of the country earlier this week and had the oppt'y to smoke 3 Cohiba torpedoes, man those were great! possibly in the top best I ever had. Couldn't get any more of those so had a fistfull of Robusto's, later in the week. Hmmmm not nearly as good. The shop down there said they had a hard time getting torpedoes so no dice on tossing a box in the carry on. And the others weren't worth it.

Ah well, back to the Monte Cristos I guess. I'd sure like to know when you are ready to start your cigar biz up, I'll be regular customer.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

I have a Cuban Montecristo I am going to light up tonight after Dinner with some Rittenhouse Rye(21y/o).
175G, that Vintage Shaggy Maduro is one of my favorites, with several others just being darn good smokes. I have quite a few Gurkha's, LFD's, a few Kristoff's and a bunch of other stuff just collecting 'old' for a while. Some go back maybe to 2003/4.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Well tonight is Carabou on the Barbie, my last 2 steaks.

And of course a nice cigar to finish it off - my last Elixir 5-50. Hell nice glass vial it comes in.

I enjoy teh cubans when I'm in Canada but they are still $35 a whack on the island - the Cohiba Maduro - fine peppery taste to it but damn expensive...once a year is good..

Now I KNOW your BS'in!!

lol just kidding! I swear I feel like I could count, out of the hundred's of LFD's I've smoked over the last few years, the ones that burned evenly to the nub on two hands!!

My favorite sticks by a long shot, but burn evenly they rarely do for me!

I haven't found any of the new Limitado's locally yet! Looking forward to them! Nice review!

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Most all of my LFD's burn like that. I can count the LFD's and Gurkha's I have had that burned uneven on both hands as well. I did have a bit of wrapper unravel right at the end due to an overzealous second cut on the cap to clean it.

Last night:
Montecristo, the real one. The wrapper of this Puro was almost a rosado in color. After removing the chateau, the oiliness made for a very silky feel in the hand. Prelight draw was even, but a little heavy due to a slightly tight and dense construction. Pre light tastes were a very smooth sweet tobacco, earth, and a nice mellow pepper. Upon lighting, the flavors opened right up in the first half inch.
A very classic cigar with highlight notes of pepper, vanilla, light spice, and a creamy, toasty finish. This cigar lit easy and burned very evenly.
The Rittenhouse 21 Year Old Rye accompanied this cigar perfectly. The spicy citrus notes and sweet finish were just what this cigar needs for a perfect compliment in taste.
Damn, life is good!

Interesting! Let me ask you since your more well versed in this then I am, you think it might be a storage issue with the even burn? I store at 65-70f and 65%.

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

Condition to 58% for a few days before smoking. Makes them burn more even as they are not as 'damp'.
At every inch I 'clean' the cigar by taking a drink of whatever I am drinking(usually bourbon) and blowing out through the cigar. At the halfway point, I clip the second part of the cap(My initial cut leaves at least half the cap). At the 3/4 mark, I clip yet again to leave maybe 1/8 of the cap. This does a good job of removing the built up tar at the head of the cigar and thus makes for better taste to the nub or in some cases to the point that a cigar just decides to turn acidic. This is noted by the rancid burned taste a cigar has if it goes out, or if the smoke and tar acidify, which they do. If you smoke in your garage, this is the scent you smell first thing in the morning before airing it out, an acrid smell that is the same on any cigar will exhibit when it turns.
This is due to the fact that tar and smoke acidify within minutes after sitting static. I think it is also the reason Churchill said,"Every cigar tastes like a dime store cigar halfway" hence his reason for only smoking those big 7.5 x 50's halfway

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

la flor dominicana limitado 3. perfect cigar i had one saturday night. it is the best cigar i have had to date. and if you are looking for more of these good luck for they have been replaced with the limitado 4. i havent been smoking long but been smoking from every manu i can get. i do have a montecristo reserva negro that i picked up last week. one beautiful cigar it will be a shame to smoke but will soon enough.

would like to hear what the best cigar you all have smoked?

Re: Switchblades' Seeee-Gars

The best one ever? It was an old Drew Estate Medusa in Afghanistan with two of the guys on my shift after a crap day. It's not really about the cigar as much as it is about the company.
With that said, a certain SGM and Old Retarded Top , myself, three Kristoff MAduro's, and a 23 year old bottle of bourbon was top of the list. No one left until the cigars were burned to the nub and the bottle was empty. Not a bad night.
Right up htere with it was an Old Retarded Top and ME on my deck with some Mitcher's Small Batch and LFD El Museo's.
I could say a Padron 45, a PAdron 80 years, or a Gurkha Royal Reserve, but it's just not as good when you are alone on the porch or deck as it is with a good friend or two
