I just saw this movie two nights ago. Very powerful.

It is based on the real story of 4 main characters who were sent by their families as "fallen" women to the Magdalene Asylums which were a money making source for the Irish Catholic Church via their laundry work.

Abuse was rampant. Some were there for life having committed no crime. Some were mentally ill but a lot were just unwed mothers and rape victims.

There is a documentary on the DVD that interviews a few women who had been essentially slave labor inmates. One was sent there from an orphanage because she was "too pretty" and the nuns worried she would "fall away".

It is a gripping historical portrayal of that time period in those places. Many former victims have said it was exponentially worse than the film portrayed.

The film was officially banned by the Vatican.

It is available on netflix for those with that service.

Highly recommend it.

There was one scene especially that just gripped me by my heart. I literally could not move to spit into my dip can until the scene broke as the woman screaming at her abuser displayed such righteous anger. The anger she displayed reminded me of a scene on COPS I saw long ago where a child screamed at his father to never come back as he was being led away in cuffs for domestic abuse of the boy's mother and himself.

Cannot recommend this enough if you care more about truth than CGI whiz bangs and such.
