Ok im looking to change my 257 weatherby mag barrel.I got a rem. 700 started life as a sps. i bought a boyds lam. stock and had it bedded.I have bought a new s.s shilen select match .25 cal. #5 contour 1-10 twist barrel for it. I am hoping to get Roscoe from Louisiana Precision Rifles to do the smithing for me.My question is would you guys keep this rifle a weatherby or change to a 25-06 AI.? I have been toying with this idea for somewtime now and i have the barrrel and Shilen trigger now.I going to get him to Blue print my Action and chamber the barrel and bed stock. This rifle will be for hunting only.I will punch paper some but maybe 100-200 shoots per year...This will be my first custom Gun and want something that is still huntable and shoots good 1/2" to 1/4".My next question is zero freebore weatherby.I spoke with one smith that suggested a zero freebore. I do reload 100% of all my ammo but what are the benifits of the zero freebore?I have spoke with Roscoe once in the Begining of the year but it has taken me a while to collect all the parts as i am on a budjet like most folks.I plan on contacting him and visiting him personaly about the build but did not want to bother the man until i had all my parts on hand..Thanks for all the help sorry for such a long post but i am getting ready to spend alot of money and would like yalls input ..thanks.

Good luck getting some answers. I posted a similar question about a 257 wby. Build with no feedback. Seems as if u have no tacticool caliber then u get little interest here. Maybe better in the hunting section or gunsmithing

Call Kevin rayhill at stockade gun stocks. He is very knowledgeable about hot rod calibers. He just did a build for me

Good luck

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

Truthfully I would go with a straight .25-06. The weatherby is expensive to shoot unless you handload and already have brass. You are going to have to fire form brass for the .25-06AI which will suck life out of your barrel and cost you time and money, and neither one really does that much more than the standard .25-06.

Unless this is for really long range hunting where you absolutely need to sqeeze out everything she's got I just don't see the need for the extra 100 fps that you are going to get.

Just my two cents. Good luck either way.

Finally, and I'm not trying to be a smartass but breaking down your posts into paragraphs will make them a lot easier to read and you'll probably get more feedback that way.

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

My favorite Weatherby round. Stay with the WM
I have 2 identical mkV in .257 Bought one for my stepson and and after 4 years of sitting in the safe and never being shot, I reclaimed it. (His passion is surfing)
Maybe after I reach 100 post I'll try & sell it on here.

From deer size critters down it hits like a lightning bolt.

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

Since you have an action with a magnum boltface. stick with a magnum. To switch to 25-06, you (Roscoe) would either have to fit a new PTG bolt, a used Rem 700 bolt with a .473" boltface or bush the magnum boltface and recut to .473.

Or

Sell the 257 and buy a donor with the boltface you will need for the cartridge you want to shoot.

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

I would not consider any thing other than zero freebore. Love the cartridge. It will amaze you with a 115 Barnes Triple Shock.
Decent barrel life to about 900 rds.

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

I hunt with a few guys that use 257WM and have seen the results on game. It is devastating on deer-size game when the round hits the right spot.

My only problem with weatherby is that no one else makes ammo for them, so the price is somewhat ridiculously priced.

It does some serious damage as a hunter.

Re: thoughts on the 257 wm.

Hornady will be releasing two types of factory ammo in a few weeks.

90 gr. GMX
&
110 Interbond

Both will sell for $40 - $50 per box. Building my daddy one as we speak & hope it likes one of the two loads hornady is putting out since he shoots off the shelf ammo.

As B Man pointed out, Hornady will be offering ammo chambered in .257 Wthby. Nosler also makes it. Neither offer much in the way of savings over Weatherby ammo (manufactured by Norma).

I always figured with all those cheaper Vanguards being sold in .257 Wthby, someone else would jump on board with other factory ammo choices. Federal and Remington also make ammo for the .300 Weatherby, and maybe some others.

As long as you handload, I don't see a problem with a minimum freebore chamber. I shoot a factory Mark V in .257 Wthby. Never could get it to shoot 100 grain bullets worth a darn; but it loves 117 grain gamekings. As others have said, it hits deer like lightning.

I also shoot a Ruger M77 Mark II in .25-06. Not as accurate as my Mark V, but both are great on deer. The Ruger goes to the range with me much more often because it's cheaper to shoot (less powder and I use .30-06 brass I've scrounged from the range over the years).
