What are the pros and cons of these units?
1. Trimble Nomad with Software
2. Recon with Software
3. Smart Phone with BF or Shooter i.e. Droid Thunderbolt in otterbox case.

Is the Nomad or Recon a solution worth the large difference in cost.

Re: Trimble Nomad vs Recon vs Smart Phone Aps

Mostly this depends or your own perception of worth. The Trimble units are rugged field computers, and much tougher than a Droid in an Otterbox.

Using a Nomad, you get GPS with mapping, an external connector for a LRF and Field Firing Solutions, arguably the most feature rich and user tuneable software available.

Now, if you don't need GPS, don't have a LRF to connect, and don't need all the features in FFS, but just want some come-up data, and don't plan to use the gear in less than optimal conditions, then there is little value in the Nomad/FFS solution.

If you need/want those features, then there is simply no comparison, the Droid and BF are not even a usable solution, cost is not the issue.

Cory,
Thank you for taking the time to reply, so mainly it's the software (FFS) and the rugged design,
GPS and backcountry topo app with offline maps loaded, Bluetooth , camera and USB ports would negate the other concerns.
