I have a buddy who is building an AR-10 in 6mm CM. He purchased a Bartlien M24 5R barrel. He then shaved the width down to 1 inch on a lathe. He also cut the length to 23 inches.
He is telling me that the receivers for the AR10 are 1" connections so he decided to take it all the way down the barrel. I may be getting the exact reason for trimming width a little bit wrong.
My question is what does this do the accuracy of the barrel? it's still 1 inch thick.

The term your using is wrong, what your dealing with is diameter. You need to have the barrel thread onto the extension. It will have to be turned down for the gas block to fit also.
