Rifle Scopes Two questions regarding canted bases...

I've been looking around and I finally found a 20 moa base for a Savage long action flat rear. Of course after purchasing the base I found some information about some of the aluminum EGW bases not mating to the reciever because they are warped. So if my base doesn't mate how do I know if the base or the reciever is out of square?

Secondly, as I mentioned the base is of the 20 moa variety. For the caliber that I'll use it on I don't need the extra moa to stretch the rifle's legs, I intend on using the base as a pseudo zero stop as has been mentioned here on the hide before.I wandering if my math is correct.

Scope has 26 mils of total elevation, 26 mils * 3.438 moa/mil = approximately 90 moa.

I'm assuming 45 moa up, 45 down.

So in conjunction with the 20 moa base the scope will still have 25 mils moa remaining ajustment below my zero.

Is my thinking/math correct.

Your math is essentially correct, except that you should have around 25 MOA of down left, not 25 mils.

Actually, it will be a bit more than that, because it takes about 4 MOA to compensate for bullet drop and height above bore to establish a 100 yard zero.

So, that will leave you with about 60 MOA up and 30 MOA down.

Re: Two questions regarding canted bases...

what i did w my flat backed savage was snug the front screws, and see if the rear of the base was flush with the reciever. it wasnt even close. was floating quite a bit.

i checked the base by mounting rings to it without mounting the base on the rifle and using lapping bars. my base was straight

i bedded the base, snugging the fronts down tight, then just setting the rear into the bedding material. after it dried i tighten the base down & checked the alignment w the lapping bar again.

i ended up w appx 35 moa, which worked well for my application.

Re: Two questions regarding canted bases...

Thanks for the input gentlemen. However I just found out that the scope I'm looking into buying (SS 10x HD) is 5 mils per turn. So with approximately 30 moa (8.7 mils) of remaining elevation I'm still going to be over a whole turn.

Any suggestions?

Re: Two questions regarding canted bases...

If by "over a whole turn" you mean that you'll still have more than 5 mils of adjustment "down" at your short-range zero, that doesn't matter. What matters is that you have enough elevation "up" to adjust the scope to shoot as far as you need to.

And optically, it's better to have the scope set reasonably close to the center of the tube, so that you're looking more closely to the center of the lens.
