After meeting a bunch of them over the years, I'd say most saved their own lives by dodging. Because if ever caught/seen doing somethings beyond the wire (or right before going) was rectified one way or the other, rather quickly,...
20 or 40 years ago, I thought very poorly of those that avoided service. Now that I have a more broad understanding of why we participate in these conflicts, I have more sympathy for people that didn't want to travel 1000s of miles to kill strangers in their own countries.
