Being that this would be the first long distance mass shooting, you shouldn't judge. The Mandalay Bay has 3309 rooms of which about 1000 would have been facing the venue. Reports I have heard is under 30 mins start to finish. Once the smoke detector went off in his room it has been reported that it was over in approx 5 mins.

Good article on time line. looks like shooting lasted approx 12 minutes (first shot at 10:08, last shot heard at 10:20). LEO was outside his door in 16 minutes (10:24) SWAT arrives at 10:28, spent the next 50 min securing the floor. Flash bang deployed at approx 11:20.

I don't know much about shooting. Buy my job has given me insight as to character. And on this one It brings tears to my eyes to say that the good old US of A is going inside out again. Through and after out country's birth to the 1850s we were solid. The civil war was pure hell. Then the industrial age which need politics and money to Pearl Harbour. Then the talking call that got the lazy off there assets. Too the good years at home while the evil nations plotted. Then the Nk and Veitcongs that started to tear the nation apart to Watergate to Clinton to 9-11 that rallied the nation together again to the pacifists to the leftists to the unhappy countrymen to the implosion of an unsatisfied national community. That is the current bent of terrorism. And in business we call it a destructive culture. However this does not help the berieved. Or prayers and God will bring in understanding and relief.

What I have read, puts him at 5-600 yards from these poor people. At 32 floors, you are talking roughly 300 feet above them. If he was using an AR platform, we are talking some serious bullet drop at that range. With him firing in the dark and without any sort of tracer rounds, he had to have spent SOME time planning this...

One other thing to those that are frustrated that they can't somehow make this horrible tragedy go away...it happened for a reason and everything that you want to do to him is nothing in comparison to what he is already going through. Now we pick up the pieces and stay strong.
It's pretty obvious it was well planned. His father was a genius and he had a lot of time even for a dummy so he would have had to read the compass backwards to miss someone. I figure that if he was firing 5.56 he would have needed 1000 rounds to do the damages at the range. 308 or better 500 rounds. Although the casualty to wound ratio does point towards 5.56
Yes your over thinking it. While it did take some serious planning. There is no proof that he was aiming for one single person. Also i don't have my chart in front of me but .223 at 600 yards is 12 or 16 mil (enough that my Gen I raxor still has more to give).
He was shooting into a 4 acre arrea filled with people. There was no marksmanship skills involved. Target area was approximately 160,000 square feet with 22,000 people.
Why would he need 1000 rnds of 556? At 500 yards 556 still has velocity of 1700 fps, 500 ftlbs of energy. More than most hand guns. I sure as hell wouldn't want to catch one.
Not alll 527 wounded were gun shots. In is being said not even 1/2 were. Most were injured trying to escape.
Way, way, way over thinking this. First, ignore the elevation- all you really need to know is a decent guess for the distance from the base of where you're shooting to your targets (for this purpose anyway)- that seems to have been about 400 yards from the stage. Now, if you just did a simple, 25m battle sight zero on an M4, you're using dead hold for chest shots at 300m. Sights on chest, bullet hits chest, no adjustments required. Now, he was clearly aiming not at a point target, but an area target. Max effective range for an M4 with M855/A1 on an area target is 550m; he's effectively 365m to the stage, no more than 500m to his most likely furthest areas of fire. Well within max effective range, and wouldn't require any sight adjustment on a BZO for such use on an area target.
Literally, without an optic, he could have done a 25m BZO, used tritium FSP and two dot rear peep and been raining down highly effective fire. With an optic, zeroed to 100 yards, he would have likely been around 3.7mil for elevation at 500m. And, almost entirely open fields of fire to boot.
This would not take much skill at all to pull off.

Have no idea what was available for cover in the concert area. But it does provoke some thought about how I would have reacted and the lessons everyone here could kearn from my mistakes....
