What's wrong with being proud of where you are starting. When I first started long range shooting I didn't think there was anyway I was going to hit something at 600 yards. They are beginners shooting factory rifles. Cut them some slack.
Add into the equation that the last week in the state they are in the wind has been blowing over 15-20mph every day.

yes i do need low rings just havent had a chance yet to get them,never thought id see bashers on here but guess every forum has there trash that needs picked up,btw those factory rifles cost 600 and still shoot 1/2 moa same as a 2000 dollar rifle would ,so for us just starting out i believe we are headed in the right direction imo

I personally have never used one... I use a small sandbag, a sock, as dumb as it sounds, is the perfect size. You would use your support hand to squeeze more or less to raise or lower your point of aim. Works great, I think it's a little more stable too.

Nice shooting yall. I agree with you I didnt think I would see people getting bashed on here anywhere in the near future. Dont pay any attention to it, there are very few people in the country that can get shots on a target that size at 620 yards, much less with 15-20mph winds. Shoot, down here in Ga most hunters I personally know have NEVER shot at a distance greater than their MPBR of their rifle or over ~250 yards. And most of `em are totin` 7mm Rem Mags, .300WM`s, .30-06`s, .270`s, and one .300 Wby! Very capable cartridges I would say. I must say that the guy with .300 Wby is a decent marksman though and he shouldn`t be included with the others.
Anyway, yall should be proud, the vast majority of America has nothing to do with shooting. And the vast majority of those who do shoot do NOT take it any farther than point blank range.

I'm just playin, Didn't you see the smiley face? Get some lower rings, or something to get your cheek weld fixed. You will never tighten those groups up if you do not have a good cheek weld. Make sure you are in the correct position and that you are making your loads accurate, work on the fundamentals. That rifle will shoot considerably tighter than that.

I tried a mono pod and absolutely prefer a bag, I use the big red tac bag. The mono was wobbly and I got horizontal spred. I prolly gave up to soon. But I could see where having one always at the ready would be handy.

I shoot 600 with 168s all the time. For what you are running you both did very well. If this was your first trip to that range it can be very difficult to judge wind. You will definably want get that scope as close to rifle as possible (cheek weld). I would use a old Mark4 base and low mark 4 rings. Then check the torque on your action screws, should be around 65 inch pounds.
168s will move in the wind, but they are excellent ammo. Last summer I was shooting with a younger gentleman who was LE. His job was shooting. His ability to read the wind on first shot was so impressive, he changed how I looked at things. I have shot competitively at 600 (CMP) for years. I always had 2 sighters before I was scored. The ability to put your first shot in the X ring during high winds is a whole new world.

My dad starting shooting long range with me some last year. Those will always be great memories.
If you can keep 5 shots under 1 MOA avg at 600 yds consistantly with your factory rig then be proud! I don't know any I have shot with at 600yds benchrest comps with factory rigs that keep them .5- .75 MOA and rarley a custom and a seasoned shooter with wind calls.
I'm not the best by no stretch but I walked away 3 out of 3 times last year winning a factory rifle 600 yd. bench rest comp. I may have one group 3/4 moa and one just a hair over 1 moa. Being able to keep it consistant with mother nature involved is more important than 1/2 MOA when the elements get involved ( mirage, wind, drastic temp change, etc...). Also if you ever shoot around a seasoned long range shooter pay very close attention to what they do before every shot and before and after a break from shooting, and don't be afraid to ask questions. I have learned ALOT from a few selective shooters & owe them for what little bit I have learned.

Nice shooting and it is good to see a father and son spending some quality time together and having fun with it. As to the groups, that is good for the wind you had and first time shooting distance. For the record, the first time I ever shot 800, was in a contest. Where was the first shooting station....800. I had no idea of my bullet drop, no spotter, and I could not even see the dirt I was kicking up. When I walked down to the target and saw 0 holes, it was heartbreaking! I was blessed that day as no body made fun, but plenty provided words of encouragement and teaching moments!

great shooting guys. the sps tac is a fanstatic gun in my experiences too. The only mod I have done is a timney trigger. As mentioned earlier, you likely rattled some tailfeathers shooting those groups under the condtions with stock rifles. As for bullet stability, dont shy away from trying a 175 hpbt. I shoot varget as well, 44.5g with cci br2 primers, rem brass and 175 sierra hpbt. chrono'd for an average of 2530 fps. +- 20 fps. pic is original test for the development loads with a slight wind, more for groupings sake. Great job again, happy shooting and keep up the good work.
