I just got some Berger VLD's and I was wondering how important it is to use a "VLD chamfering tool" as opposed to a regular tool. I can see the difference in the ogive of the Berger compared to a Sierra Matchking but the tail of the bullet apppears to be the longer than the Matchking making it easier to seat straight.

I dont think its detrimental, however in saying that I have never tested a 40 vs 30 degree chamfer.
If you have a VLD chamfer tool you can use it for everything including non VLD bullets.

I actually prefer the VLD Chamfer to the non-VLD chamfer. I find the VLD chamfer to be especially helpful when seating flat base bullets.

Makes sense, I can see where the VLD tool would be easier for seating all bulletts not just VLD's. May just get a VLD tool and put the regular chamfer tool in the drawer.

I recently picked up a Lyman VLD tool, which is 22* I think. I'm using that now. I've had some jacket shavings in the past, using the traditional Wilson type ~45* tool.

I've had the same experience as Chris. I now use the 22 degree VLD chamfer tool for all my bullets. I used to get the occasional case shaving the base of the bullet with the old 45 degree tool. Now all bullets VLD or boattail or flatbase all seat easily with only moderate pressure.

I think one of the main things to consider on this subject is to break the edge of the mouth enough that it doesn't cut the jacket of the bullet when it's pushed into place. When I first started, I've used a pocket knife, center drill, countersink tool, and a bunch of other stuff. I like the tools made for it probably better than any other thing I've tried. I can use either VLD or L.E.Wilson / RCBS style and get the job done.
The main thing is that you have to find what works best FOR YOU.
