Hey guys I have an old Mosin Nagant which shoots very badly. I was thinking of playing around with it and cutting the barrel back about 2 inches, i can visually see the last inch or so the rifling is worn out completley. I have a few quesitons im sure some of you can answer from first hand experince. What is the best tool for cutting through the barrel, a hacksaw? After that refacing and crowning correct? Where my last question comes in, is does it matter where or how far back, could i cut in a place that doesnt allow the bullet to stabilize? This is just a progect to keep me busy and gain alittle insight, thanks guys.

Re: want to cut back a barrel

Have you slugged the barrel to see what size bullet you should be using? Some (the rarity) like 308 bullets, others like 311, some like 310's, etc.

If you slug it you can find out the bullet size you'll want to use, and you also may find a tight spot somewhere near the muzzle. That would be the length to cut it back to.

Having no rifling near the crown is potentially not wear but rather a counter-bored muzzle meant to field protect the actual crown.

Before chopping at all, slug the barrel and see what you get.

Hey Bohem thanks for the response, no i havnt slugged the bore and that kind of work is a bit beyond my means(casting a lead slug, ect..), no i dont believe this one was counter bored, and as im not really gonna reload for it what i will be shooting is just surplus stuff, if the bore is over sized then yea cutting it may not help at all.

Hacksaw, chopsaw would work, you will get a better & straighter cut with the chopsaw...

The important thing is to recrown the muzzle, I would recommend using the 90 degree crown tool for the Nagant. Remember that if you cut 2"s you will be removing the front sight. As far as the diameter of the round I was under the impression that was always .308... If you check any X54 round the diameter is .308....

I would use a band saw and finish it with a fine file, or have a buddie drive a truck and you sit on the bed dragging the end of the barrel down until you reach the desired length.

The name is misleading, the ammo that's factory loaded is 308 for stuff that's loaded in the west, if you measure Russian surplus it's 310 or 311 usually. The bores on most of the Finn M39's are in the 308-309 range, the Russian dredges are 310-312 sometimes as big as 314.

Re: want to cut back a barrel

The chop saw sounds like the best way to go then hacksaw, +1 for creativity with the truck lol, yes i would loose the front sight thinking i would attempt to slot out a dovetail like space and try and mount another on or same one? It would have to be modifieid a bit im sure, any one ever done it and have pics?

Re: want to cut back a barrel

Yeah I just used one on my 308 barrel, worked very well... As far as the Nagant goes I have one that I an also going to sporterize as well, I will be loosing the rear and front sights and install a scope mount on her besides the synthetic stock...
