Is it just me or are we handling this whole opioid problem wrong? Seems to me that thru a process of Brutal Darwinism the junkies are trying desperately to thin their own herd but we keep Narcaning them back from the brink. I like to think I’m a compassionate person but seriously? I personally know someone who has been clinically dead five times now and counting. I was a paramedic in the 80’s and 90’s and I maybe administered Narcan 3 or 4 times a year. I saw on the news the other day where a cop had to give 10 doses to one guy. Am I alone here? I retired from law enforcement before cops were made to start carrying Narcan. I don’t think they should carry it. Let EMS deal with it. Thoughts......

Unfortunately I think that a huge part of the opioid problem stems from Big Pharma, politicians and lobbyists. and the fact that not too long ago Drs were pumping people full of Oxycodone and other types of opioids like it was going out of style. Once it became known (LOL like they didn’t already know this! Didn’t keep them from advertising it as exactly the opposite) that it was highly addictive, they began to rein in the prescriptions but the damage was already done. Now you have a population dropping dead and addicted to opioids with no supply. They went to the streets and started buying them or other narcotics such as heroin to get their fix. Crazy amounts of middle aged soccer moms, middle-upper class addicted to heroin stemming from this exact issue. It’s a pretty sad situation. Just watched some documentary on this about some town in the North-East that was just getting hammered with heroin addictions and the vast majority of them were middle -upper class citizens, soccer moms etc with no previous criminal history.

Big Pharma, Politicians and their money grubbing bull shit destroying our country...

Big Pharma has a pill for everything now, and it’s all about the amount of money they can put in their pockets. Politicians are in the same club. They don’t hestitate to prescribe kids Xanex, Ritalin, Lexapro, Ativan, Oxy and a ridiculous amount of just about anything they can sell. Instead of parents teaching their kids how to cope with life and the issues that come with it, let’s just give them a pill for it instead. They make up diseases just so they can make money prescribing meds for it. It’s a crock of shit what this county’s becoming.

I could not agree with this more. I have been saying this for a good many years now. Some time ago before BIG Pharm was outted for pushing opioids on the public, i had a pretty wicked surgery and way back then i knew not to overdo it because well.... people are not supposed to feel like that stuff makes you feel all the time. I made the effort to take as little as possible, to take the edge off. i think i only did a week the whole cutting the pill smaller and smaller as we moved back into tylenol.

Didn’t say they didn’t exist. Nor did I say that there aren’t valid reasons for prescribing these meds on a case by case basis, however I am just saying that Drs got a bit out of control on what they prescribed and to who right out of the gate. A bit a discernment would have been nice before prescribing a hard core addictive narcotic to everyone with a stubbed toe...

Oxycodone is not the same as 800mg of Motrin....

Many here can attest to the fact that I've been saying for a LONG time:

Ban Narcan
and
Ban Tasers

The Narcan is a waste of civilians funds in eleventy different ways, and if a trigger needs to be pulled on someone, then make it worth-while. Maybe, just maybe, if "consequences" started existing again, for peoples actions,,, there might be a few who'd rethink their paths.

And for those who don't, it's a Win/Win/Win for EVERYONE else.

I had a pretty serious injury 10 years ago, Dr. wrote me me a prescription for oxy , when I told doc I was allergic to them , he said "I'm going to recommend 250 pills , if you don't use them they're easy to sell". No bullshit, he actually said that. I never filled the prescription and eventually the pain went away once I was fully recovered.

I saw a guy talking about what they did in Sweden, which was exactly that. There are places to go there where they will give what ever dose you want to inject yourself. They also provide people with help, in an attempt to get them off the drugs. He made it sound like it had been fairly successful.

I know shoving them into dark alleys and making them go to bad people for their fix isn't working well.

Bro I shit you not, my dad just retired a week ago after 22 years with ICE either serving as a firearms instructor or door banging no knocks on illegal violent offenders or illegal scum who committed sexual crimes against children, and he told me and I quote “dude it’s so bad we call local PD to be on standby with tasers, because they know we won’t shoot them”. Anybody wanna guess why he didn’t do 30 years? Criminals aren’t even afraid to get shot anymore they just don’t wanna get tased. Lose the tasers, and drop a few hammers, it’s the only fix.

YOu have no idea.

I drove a cab for a few months this fall. I made most of my money picking up junkies and taking them for methadone. In my county alone there were 3 within a couple miles of each other. 6 days a week Id get $60 to pick them up and take them to the clinic and $60 more to take them home. They couldnt get along so each one got their own cab. About an hour round trip each. The ones in the next city I got $120 for and it took about 2.5 hours round trip. Thats just a few. I could list 30 or 40 but probably 150 total, and the methadone is free. If you total that up its a lot of taxpayer dollars. On Sunday's they give them an extra dose so they dont have to come in.

Before I retired, I was at a few Narcan administrations... you revive the no-breathers and you know what they do first? Bitch at EMS or the administering officer for screwing up their high.

When I was a medic we made sure to restrain the piece of sh’’ err I mean the patient first, then give The Narcan. They were almost always pissed when they woke up.

Rehab heavens knows how many times. Now its prescriptions for chronic pain. I know he has pain. Just saying tons of opioids arent the answer.

Always waiting for the call its happened.

Momma lost a cousin, same thing. Too much pains meds after back surgery.

Im a very caring person. There just isnt anything i can do anymore.
Im not cold, just understand reality.

When I blew my back out in 2011 and had truly debilitating chronic sciatica pain from my ass to my toes in my left leg they tried to put me on pain killers. I was floor ridden for about 2 years. I told the docs I wasn't taking that shit. He looked at me kinda confused and asked what I planned to do for the pain. I said "about a case of miller lite a day". You can't do that he said. I said, "watch me..." Cracked a beer as soon as I woke up. It took about 10-12 beers by mid afternoon to dull the pain so I wasn't in tears. Did that for almost a year straight until the cock sucker insurance company finally let me have surgery. After surgery it was tolerable pain that I didn't need to get drunk before 10am.

The ones you complain about are the dirt bags. Big deal. The billions of dollars in that industry are NOT coming from them. There is a large percentage of white collar, pearl wearing big money people getting pharmaceutical grade products administered in appropriate doses. Politicians, lawyers, doctors, the billionaire upper crust, Hollywood, Wall Street, Academia. Billions of dollars going up noses, down gullets and into veins. It is worth someone's while to make sure that keeps going. enough money that the President of Mexico was given 100 million to dole out to politicians in the US, at 10 million each. That buys a lot of looking the other way.

Nobody is FORCED to administer a damn thing no one has a gun to any EMT or LE forcing them to administer it

If all you babysitters of the people banded together and refuse to do it then you would NOT have to administer a damn thing.

The rank and file needs to inform management they want nothing to do with adminstering it and put them on notice they will have to deal with the Bluflu if they don't like it.

Fucking management gambling with LE lives against the drug dealers only to be forced to save the junkies that keep the drug dealers going? WTF man.....
