what to upgrade next?

I have a remington 700 bdl in 300 win mag. This passed weekend I found a sendero stock to drop it in and now I do not know what to do next. This rifle is mainly a hunting gun, but I also want it to be a tack driver on paper. I need a new scope, trigger and barrel. I talked to a local gunsmith earlier and he quoted me $850 to have it rebarrelled into a heavier barrel (the barrel he quoted me on was a douglas match grade barrel) and that price includes the cost of a holland or jp precision MB because im not shooting a 300 wm without one. Now my biggest thing is, should I go ahead and spend my money on optics, or barrel. I only have the money to do one or the other right now. The scope I'm using is a simmons ATV 4.5-14 and the current barrel is the original sporter barrel with a vanden berg custom brake on it.

Well, If you get the optics you want, you could shoot the barrel out over the course of a year or so. Sporter contours can still shoot, they just do not stand up to the heat of repeated shooting as well.

If you get the barrel, well there is nothing horribly wrong with the scope if it holds zero. That said, I do not think it has knobs on it. I would likely do optics first.

Yeah, no knobs, it was my first rifle from growing up, so it has just a basic hunting scope on it that has served me pretty well.

I would, if it were me, buy better optics.

Vortex Viper PST, Sightron SIII or SII Big Sky. How much magnification do you want? What is the current dollar allowance you have for optics?

old style remington trigger are good, just have it adjusted or tuned. Get a kreiger or bartlein barrel. For sure tho, optics should be next.

yeah ive got the trigger at around 3 lbs. but no creep and 0 overtravel...its just a tad heavy for my likings. I want to eventually put a jewell in it, but that is last on my list. I am definately thinking optics...really looking at the vortex viper pst 6-24 FFP. One question on that one though, does it have illumination? I was looking on the SWFA website and it did not say

PST is illuminated. I would go with optics. I just got a PST which is the best scope I have owned to date. I got to tell you it has changed the whole game for me! I am no longer happy with the rest of my optics. I have friends with $$ scopes but till I put some time in with something "better" I just didn't know? You won't be sorry!!
