which barrel is best for a benchrest 300wm or rum

Re: which barrel is best for a benchrest 300wm or rum

what class will you be shooting? what is your desired finished weight for the gun? what distance will you be competing at? what bullet do you plan on shooting? there are many variables needing answered in order to answer your question

Re: which barrel is best for a benchrest 300wm or rum

You are allowed more weight than that in F-open. I do believe it is 21 pounds. I would get as close to that weight as you could if shooting the heavy bullets with the magnum case. After 60-70 shots you will have some serious fatigue at 21lbs, let alone 15 lbs. Recoil lending itself to why nobody uses the RUM for fclass. That said, I would go for a 300 Win mag, better brass/barrel life, less recoil and can send the heavies at respectable velocities. This has been my experience as a have a rifle in both chamberings. The RUM is an absolute animal but I believe it has a place as a long range big game rifle.

If you are going to shoot at Williamsport PA 1000 yd club.Light gun can be no more than 17lbs.Heavy gun class no weight restrictions.

The 7WSM is a hammer. If going that route I would go 7SAUM, more efficient and better barrel life. The 7's are going to be better all around for Fclass. Less recoil and insane BC's with lighter bullets than the Big 30's. Also, you do not have to bother with the belt of the 300WM if you go the WSM/SAUM route. There is extensive writing on these specific topics at www.6mmbr.com, its a website dedicated to match shooting and would serve you well.

A 300 Win Mag for F Class? I'm no expert but that is way to gun in my opinion. You're going to be shooting way too many rounds too quickly for your barrel to hold up.

Go over to 6mmBR.com and see what match winners are shooting over there. I doubt you'll find many (if ANY) shooters using such a big, barrel burning cartridge.

You're more likely to find people shooting 284's and BELOW. Shooting in fast strings of firing with cartridges of 40 grains of powder is a heck of a lot better than the same thing but with 80 grains. Barrels are expendable but they should last more than one or two matches.

I also like the .308. I know long shots can be taken with it. I'd stop at 1760yds but that's many moons down the road. Do y'all think it'd be a caliber worth building?

Re: which barrel is best for a benchrest 300wm or rum

If you built a 308 you would be able to shoot in the Ftr division. Essentially, only 223's and 308's. Anything other chambering and you will be in F-open. The 308 will definitely teach you how to read wind at 1k. But as far as shooting 1760 yards, it is totally outclassed and consistent hits would be very very difficult. Upside is that the 308 is relatively cheap to shoot and barrels last forever.
