I know this should be in the Stupid Question section, but its not Marksmanship Related.

Take it into account, I'm old, having retired from the Military in '92, uniforms are different now. Then we wore Bow ties with dress blues and neck ties with greens. Greens aren't used any more so both the bow tie and neck tie are used with the dress blues depending on the occasion.

So here is my dilemma. Friday, I'm going to Portland where my Grandson is graduating ROTC. I will have the pleasure of pinning him with the same 2LT bar I was pinned with when I graduated from OCS. This butter bar has been passed down from the Korean war to my mentor, to me, and now to my grandson.

I had to buy a new set of Blues (my other set shrunk) and have it all set up except for the tie.

I don't know which tie to wear.

Any suggestions

Neck tie for sure. Then if SHTF you can use it for a tourniquet, or even to choke someone. Always thinkin ahead....

Thanks for your service, congratulate your grandson and what a great memory for both of you. Pick one that makes sense to you....not sure it will be a big part of the great memories you are making.

The four-in-hand (long thin) tie is worn before 6 PM (1800 hrs) and while on duty in official capacity after 6 PM. The bow tie is worn after 6 PM for social events.

As per AR 670-1 and ALARACT 202/2008

The class "A" ASU includes the army blue coat and trousers/skirt/slacks, a short or long sleeve white shirt and four-in-hand necktie (male)/neck tab (female) (for accessories and other items authorized for wear on the class "A" ASU, see ASU accessory items authorized for wear).

ALARACT 202/2008 specifies that the "dress blue ASU" for men includes a "black bowtie." It makes no mention of the black four-in-hand necktie in connection with the "dress blue ASU." Since, according to paragraph 10 of the same ALARACT and paragraph 27-19a of AR 670-1, the bow tie is worn only after retreat,...
