Who or what is TSMC and why do they matter?

I remember some guy that saw this coming……

They are one of two large mfg of Silicon Chips (along with UMC) located in Tawain. They do MOST of the Silicon Chip Business.

Intel really only does PC processors and has one of the largest domestic chip presence, but again, its ALL processors. TI has a tiny fraction of SI business.

They are the Coke and Pepsi of Si mfg.

(Edit: If I am China--I got missiles aimed at all the Tawain Plants. And if I am the US, I have the same plan. CHina would cripple us if they possessed them or destroyed them, and we can't allow ComChina to own them

The fate of the world economy may depend on what happens ...

Good article. There was a 60 minutes story recently that specifically discussed TSMC and it was informative.

The attached link is only a minute of the actual interview but if I find the full length version I’ll copy it here.

He said "If theres a war everything will be destroyed." I wonder if they will destroy it to keep the Chicoms from getting it. I'd hope so.

oh no, people won't be able to get a new phone they don't need.
Short sighted on your behalf.

Chips are in cars and trucks, refrigerators, stoves, cellphones, radios and TVs, heating and AC, dishwashers, computers and laptops, clothes washers and dryers, farm equipment, construction equipment (lazer levels and surveying scopes), the scanner the mechanic uses on your cars and trucks.

Chips of one sort or another have embedded themselves into literally every moment of your day....yes there is probably one in your electric coffee pot, there is definitely one in your instant pot cooker.
What about your ballistics comp and your wind meters ?

Yes we can do without them, but it would be so hard you'd puke.

You could take over the factory and probably not produce very much because TSMC like many other super high tech places rely on a worldwide network of engineers, process monitors and control techs.

Parts and upgrades and service come from Europe.

But what we are doing is showing the Chinese and anyone else that doesn't want to be a serf to the empire of America, that if you don't want to be a serf, you are going to have to build all your own stuff and it's a very long road to play catch up, because the USA likes to tell the entire rest of the world what they can and cannot do depending on the whims of our politicians.

Spent my career in Semiconductors. From TI in the 60's to Hitachi in the 90's. We lost the business as we have lost most manufacturing. It takes about 3 years to get a plant up, that's if you can get the complex equipment, we don't manufacture that either. If TSMC and other Taiwan plants,, goes or is shut, it will have massive impact on world semiconductors, which will domino into most other products. Hold your breath.

Wasn't trying to dump on the topic, just couldn't resist a dig on our consumerism. Honestly I think mass migration from poor shit holes is driven by greed and the need for more consumers for their shit, except we pay most of the bills.

Interesting view. I agree.

Good and great men and women gave up greatness, and small men and women have abused it and made us reviled
