Cicero police officers tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 3900 block of South Cicero Avenue when the driver took off, according to Cicero police Superintendent Jerry Chlada Jr.
Officers boxed the vehicle in on the southbound ramp of the Stevenson, Chlada said. The male driver got out and fired multiple rounds from an automatic weapon at two officers, according to Cicero officials.
Officer Luis Duarte, 31, was hit multiple times, leaving wounds in his arm, leg and side, officials said. Duarte, who has been with the Cicero Police Department for about four years, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Late Thursday, he was in good condition following surgery.
Duarte’s wife, parents and siblings were at the hospital as he underwent surgery, authorities said.
The alleged shooter then ran north on Cicero and fired at another officer who chased him, Chlada said. A man with a concealed carry license driving south on Cicero in heavy traffic exited his vehicle and fired at the suspect, Chlada said.
“We were lucky enough to have a citizen on street that is a concealed carry holder, and he engaged in gunfire with this offender who was struck one time,” Chlada said.
Police did not release additional information about the concealed carry holder, and it was not clear who shot the suspect.
The male suspect was in serious condition at an area hospital, Chicago police said.
Cicero Town President Larry Dominick spoke to reporters outside of Mount Sinai Hospital and thanked the Cicero and Chicago police officers who responded to the shooting, as well as the citizen who fired at the suspect.
“The officer’s doing pretty good for being shot several times,” Dominick said.
Chicago police are investigating the incident while Illinois State Police are investigating the use of force by Cicero police

I doubt it was an actual full-auto firearm. Good on the CWP holder.

It's Chicago where laws don't apply to criminals

From the story-
Officer Luis Duarte, 31, was hit multiple times, (4) leaving wounds in his arm, leg and side, officials said.

Officials say Duarte, 31, was shot four times, in his leg, stomach and twice in the arm

Full auto weapons are perfectly easily available to those who will break laws... And it is Chicago.

Anyone wonder what happens to millions of 'parts sets' sold for years? Tell me that crooks in a machine shop in Cicero would not happily be building muffler-tube guns.

Not to mention those that may well have come back in duffelbags, hidden in cargo, etc. from 17 years in the sandbox???? Enough gangbangers have gone through a tour or two that plenty of 'field acquired' hardware can find its way home.

Good on the CCW holder! As for the initial question... Depends. Obviously, this guy got the job done. Big. Huge. Cojones. Well done!

I used to work in Cicero and it's its own little world surrounded by The City. It's blue-collar industrial and has its own PD that is way more feared by the thugs than CPD was. If that citizen had shot a voter a few blocks in any other direction then Big Chicago would be frying his ass. I have a feeling that Cicero will go to the mat for him.

CHICAGO — A California man Daniel Mageo has been charged with shooting a Cicero police officer in a wild shootout near I-55 on Thursday.
Daniel Mageo, 27, was denied bail Saturday during a bond hearing.
Mageo was previously convicted of human trafficking and had outstanding warrants for a parole violation and a sex offense

A good Samaritan with a concealed carry license got of his car and fired shots toward Mageo, but missed, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Guy Lisuzzo. Mageo continued to shoot at police, but Duarte's partner was able to stop him by shooting the man multiple times in his ankle and leg.

Mageo then yelled at the officer that he should kill him, Lisuzzo said. Mageo had a semiautomatic gun with an extended clip; he had fired every bullet.
