One of our neighbors has acquired the most annoying little menace to our peace and quiet imaginable. It just won't shut the f*ck up, and they have it outside constantly. I'm to the point where I'm about ready to send Bella out on a sanctioned search and destroy mission. Please, Creator, by Your grace, perhaps a bit of not-terribly-uncomfortable laryngitis, perhaps?

Maybe they have it outside because they don't want to listen to the ankle biter.
Fireworks can subdue some barky rats.

+1 Sonic Bark Stopper. No shit, those things work. Hell, your neighbors will wonder WTF happened to the dogs. Just put it on the fence where they can't see it and they will have no clue.

Agree. Had the same problem at my last place. put up a sonic bark stopper. worked well. Didn't get rid of the shitty neighbors but at least I didn't have to listen to their dog bark throughout the day and night at every damn thing.

A friend had his dogs declared dangerous after one of
them bit his neighbours yappy Mexican rat literally in
half . Had to get them relocated , or euthanised ...

The electronic no bark thing sounds like it worth a try
first , In addition to a friendly chat with other annoyed
neighbours , before you chat with the owner .

had this issue at my last GF's house. fucking german shepard outside yapping. after my second weekend there, i had enough. i went outside to see what was going on. dog had no water, floor of kennel was caked with feces. tried talking to the dog, and it was afraid. the second i turned my back to walk away, it hit the fence lunging at me. it was about then that she opened the door, and i laid into her. shamed the hell out of her, "what is wrong with you leaving that dog in feces with no water or food? do you think everyone wants to listen to that all night? you are WRONG. fix this issue or i will. you ought to be ashamed of yoursel...". that's when she slammed the door.

problem was solved. problem is staying solved, as i quit dating her. i LOVE permanent solutions.

i dislike inconsiderate assholes. if you are going to be an asshole, be direct about it.

i'd go over nicely, but firmly, and talk to them. let them know it's a problem. maybe they are so stupid as they dont know it's an issue. just tell them that it is an issue, and it is disrupting your life and you would appreciate their efforts into addressing the issue. maybe that'll be enough, maybe not. be nice, but firm. also be prepared to say it like it is, shoudl they need a dose of reality. it's worth a shot.

Owners should be dealt with. Specifically and clearly. That is all.

Gotta agree. It's not the dog's fault --it just wants to be inside with the people. Animals are innocence and we could learn a lot from them.

Have you tried talking to them first, or even an anonymous letter?

I had this issue in Seattle. I put a note on their door explaining how it was bothering several neighbors and how they were gonna have to fix it or we would. Generally the light concealed threat works best.

When they ignore that, well, I get creative. Like five pound bricks of black cats in their garbage can at 3am. They usually get the message after that. You can also shine a spotlight through their windows (a BIG one) until they get the point. The idea is to prevent them from sleeping until they fix the problem. Trust me, it works.

Their idea is likely they don't want to clean up after or train the dog so they put it out when they leave instead of crating it until it learns not to go in the house. Chances are they have no idea how to raise a dog, chances are they think it stops barking during the day, some do. That was my problem. I had to instruct said neighbor on how to crate their dog and the problem was over. But not before I had to leave the anonymous letters.

Easy fix, no cost and nobody and no animals get hurt.

These people are new, and we haven't been properly introduced. They're also renters, and renters in general just don't seem to give a damn about the rest of the world. We're going to get over the proper mind-fuck that it is for most people to meet me for the first time, and then we'll tackle other issues. (I showed up once to a match with a new group for the first time, a few minutes late, and strolled up while they were beginning the RSO's safety instructions. Everybody's just staring at me, slack-jawed, and I said, "You know what it's like looking like this and pulling up on the side of the road to ask for directions to a rifle range?")

Agreed. Neighbors dogs made the trip up here once. Pit Bull/Lab mix. I sent them home with a half full beer bottle to the ribs of the leader. This was followed by a polite but stern phone call to said neighbor. We asked if they enjoyed their dogs and if so, take ownership of them and keep them at home. Haven’t seen them since.

If further action would have been needed, a second phone call was going to include the phrase, “We don’t shoot AT things here, we shoot things here”.

sweet. renters. that gives you yet another option. contact the land lord. hell, chances are high that dogs are not allowed and they are breaking the rules. that problem just might solve itself.

Nah. I've seen his rental listing online. Dogs are okay, as are cats.

There is a couple things most people don't realize about the dogs they get as pets.

Dogs are meant to be social animals and being alone is very stressful for them. Certain breeds do okay alone, but if you have to have a dog and leave them alone, get 2 dogs and they will be much happier. People get a dog then leave it alone all day with nothing to do and nobody to see and wonder why it gets stressed and behaves all crazy.

If you are going to have dogs, you should really consider making them part of the family, (unless they are specific working dogs), have them live in the house with you. They will be much happier and much less likely to have issues if you have them inside with you at night and when you are home. Also if you give them plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation as well as good food, and a schedule, may breeds will be happy and sleep a large part of the day unless a cat, rabbit, rat, squirrel or other dog or human alerts them.

Some breeds, especially a lot of the "toy" breeds are neurotic yappers and if you get them, no matter how cute they are to you, everybody will hate you for it.

FYI
Dogs are a direct reflection of their handler/owner PERIOD. (Nutty handler, nutty dog, calm handler, calm dog)
They are DOGS FIRST BREED SECOND as far as behavior.
Dogs require DAILY MENTAL and PHYSICAL stimulation.

Agreed. I’ve always had a theory. Give a 6 week old pup to a newly married couple. Come back in a year to evaluate said dog. Breeding of the newlyweds will be determined based on the dogs behavior. Unfortunately in most cases, it wouldn’t be fair to the dog.

My trainers motto is a tired dog is a good dog. My labs get a minimum of 20 miles a week of hiking with me. That’s just barely enough for these pups.

This is damn good information and I can tell you that you'll also have a much better dog. My setter NEVER leaves my side, he goes everywhere I go unless it's too hot and he has to stay in the truck. He IS family. If I'm upset, he knows it. If I'm angry, he knows it. He brings me what I need sometimes before I know I need it, or to let me know he needs something. He can run like a bullet but will stop and recall when I say. He's had the very bare minimum of training; sometimes training "just happens" over time, especially if you two are together for five years plus. Amazingly smart animals but you'd never know that unless you spent a lot of time with 'em. My dog is my buddy. My "wife" took my 13yo. Cocker, he's old, blind, deaf and only cares about her; I just hope he's not being left alone because he can't handle that either, goes crazy. That's another thing, dogs pick their owners --let the dog pick you. I picked a different setter but this is the one that stayed by me while the rest ran around and played, so I took him instead.

Now I have a cat too, rescued her from a parking lot, abandoned. She doesn't mind staying at home as long as she has food and some water. She comes to you when she wants attention. She doesn't make noise or do damage. Still, cats need attention too, but if you don't have the time during the day, get a cat. They're great companions too. I didn't like cats until I realized I really like cats.

If you don't have time for a pet, don't get one. Especially a dog because like W54 says, they are social animals. It drives 'em crazy, literally, I've seen it happen and I've seen amazing dogs ruined by leaving them outside, ignored. Some breeds do better than others too, it's important to get the right breed.

Just never blame the dog. They are innocent, incapable of malice. They learn better through positive reinforcement too, especially dogs that are very sensitive like this setter. If he even thinks I'm angry, he hides. There is no need to ever escalate from there. No, I always blame the owner of bad dogs, I deal with the human when it requires negative reinforcement.

Some people just do not know this and it becomes incumbent upon us to teach them. It's the neighborly thing to do. Most people will accommodate IME; the ones that don't, well, they can be made to.
