Maggie’s Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

How about Saul Hudson (Slash) and Peter Frampton. He makes the guitar talk for Christ's sake!

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Jimi Hendrix
SRV
Frank Zappa
Prince (Santana's favourite)
Jeff Beck
Richie Blackmore
Jimmy Rosenberg (Django Reinhart with 5 fingers)
Billy Gibbons

I've seen them all in consert except Hendrix.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Not really fair to not include all string pickers...

I could listen to Earl and Lester for hours.

Classical and Flamenco guitar just impress the hell out of me. I try to play some from time to time but it just doesn't happen. Those two guys make that shit seem so natural.

Blues guitar speaks to the soul and Johnny Shines captured that voice indescribably.

I'm with you on this one.

My favorite of all time is Al Di Meola. I watched him in concert once, 5 rows back, I giggled like a little schoolgirl. Amazing control and mastery.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Well at least two guys in this thread know what a guitar is supposed to sound like.

Zappa
Vai
Satriani

In that order.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Billy Corgan

There are definitely others out there but this guy seems to have help usher in the alternative rock seen.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Warren Demartini. He was/is the lead guitarist for RATT. His style is flashy and his note selection is excellent. He also didn't rip off other 70's/80's guitarists. His playing is very clean, fast and bluesy. Also and probably most important of all is that he helps write great songs which puts him above other better (technical) guitar players such as Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, and the like.

Old school here. Reinhardt, Joe Pass, Bucky Pizzarelli, Charley Byrd, George Barnes, Chet Atkins, etc. etc., etc. They actually played guitar instead of all that screechin' shit...

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

RANDY RHOADES

was trained a classical music guitarist form a youngster, did whatever it took to pay to attend various music composing and theory schools, was of the quite type, was picked by ozzy because nothing like his playing was ever heard in the "rock and roll or heavy metal" biz.

not only brought a full emotional spectrum of performances from the guitar, but keyboards, violin, bass, percusion, etc. to give a bigger, fuller sound that complimented each other in a way that was not heard of before. everything he put out was orchestrated.

fast, slow, rhythm or a solo, distorted or acoustic, his music was always precise, perfect, and had some meaning, and never ever commercial.

either him or the kid from "deliverance".....

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

4. Buddy Guy
5. Albert Collins
6. Gatemouth Brown
7. Eric Clapton
8. BB King
9. Muddy Waters
10. John Lee Hooker

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Classical, Segovia, for reasons of abject envy...

Blues, Robert Randolph, there will never be enough Randolph... I jus' need more, ev' ry day...

The rest, Eric Clapton, like, I need a reason?

The Kid was/is Billy Redden.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

For my money it has to be the young Peter Green. For pure, fluid, soul destroying blue notes, then tracks like Jumping at Shadows and Need Your Love are very very hard to beat.

Makes it all the more poignant that the pressure destroyed him in his later years and he is now a shadow of the young British Blues God of the late 60s.

Makes you think what could have been.

Regards

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

Got two that are almost never mentioned.

One is Lindsey Buckingham. Mostly known from Fleetwood Mac (always going in my shop). He can tear up a guitar and a banjo of all things. Unappreciated by many.
Not the best "official site" but was first off of Google.

My other is Bob Zabek. He's a freakin magician with several types of quitars and I think it is cool that he can run from Classical to Blues to Hard Rock.

Bob Zabek - not the most impressive of his clips but one of my favorites.

Re: Your Favorite Guitarist and why

I can't believe nobody has said Robert Johnson...

For his time, what he did on guitar was amaizing, technical, soulful goodness...

That and without him, the vast majority of players mentioned would not know what to play.

How many artists can say that they were covered by Zeppelin?
