Wet Mounting Scope Mounts - Where It All Started

I figure since Hakan did a video interview about it, maybe it’s time to bring all the testing to the light.

In a nutshell, I experienced a scope zero shift in 2015 from the rifle falling over in the hotel room at the Hide Cup. When i returned home and started testing to find the origin of the shift issue we had the first round of NF Atacr 5-25’s at the time and just had switched from our Schmidt PMII’s. What started as a test with a couple mounts on the range turned into an international effort across over a dozen companies. Some companies provided mounts for testing, others got involved in the testing, many different brands and types of optics were tested, various platforms, literally barrels were burnt out just doing the testing over the next 2 years. In the end all parties found no design fix to the inherent shift in the pic rail design. Spoiler: It can be reduced or almost totally mitigated by greasing the rail. Early on when I thought the scopes may be the issue, I spent a whole day at the S&B US Service center with Jerry Ricker absolutely beating up scopes, guns and mounts testing on the collimator and determined the optics weren’t the problem (that and Ryan Brandt from Big Dog Steel decided to JB Weld his scope into his rings and still had shift). Interesting note; a drop of a rifle from hip height on the scope yields consistent .2-.4 mil shift while a ‘dead blow’ on the objective yields up to 2.3 mils with some mounts. Once the shift occurs, you can retorque the mount cross bolts or hit the chassis of the rifle with a hammer and the shock will center the mount back to its zero position.

I found out greasing the rail fixes the issue by grabbing a set of brand new Badger rings out of the package covered in grease and was tired of prepping mounts so I slapped em on greasy and figured if they held zero I would remount them after a full cleaning. Well, sure enough they didn’t shift. So I said that’s it, I’m running Marty’s rings going forward. Pulled them, cleaned and remounted them. I decided to confirm the install and retested since I couldn’t believe everything shifts .9-2.3mils and these guys didn’t shift at all. Whelp, they shifted when retested and the only thing I did was degrease them. Further testing of all previous mounts greased yielded varying amounts of shift to no shift at all confirming the observation. During these tests, it became apparent overtouquing mounts made the issue worse. So make sure to torque only to mfg specs.

Also tested were oversized Pic Rails, polished pic rails, varying coatings on pic rails, from steel to aluminum. Even other types of rail designs were looked at, such as euro dovetail on AI and Sako rifles, those shifted as well.

Another interesting note is that we never saw scopes shift in any ring set we tried when mounted properly. That’s saying something since we literally were beating up 4x4 blocks with scopes and rolling rifles off the backs of truck for drop testing.

ETA: this is all about an observed windage shift. The number of recoil lugs or cross bolts made no difference. The grease prevents the mount from ‘sticking’ off center and allows it to find its center. The idea is, the mount will shift side to side when impacted, with a deadened blow there is a lack of residual vibration to keep the mount moving until it recenters and that’s why a by violent drop has 1/3 or less the shift of a deadened blow of the hand or a dead blow hammer tapped against the left or right side of the objective.

Scammers

Usually I wouldn’t do this however today I’m feeling generous. Anyway to actually catch this bastard? I commented on a post, and he texted me shortly afterwards. I know it’s probably a waste of time but man I hate these guys. I have a few resources but it’s honestly going to be above my pay grade in the end. Anybody have any suggestions?

Pitting in the chamber, did I do it?

IMG_4050.jpeg

Video of the bore camera footage.

This is my PRS barrel it’s a Bartlein and I’m sure it’s something I did and not the barrel. I’m looking to isolate so I don’t do it again. Barrel has about 1k rounds on it shot a few matches. For the most part I clean after shooting. Recently switched to Thoro clean. Prior to was using Iosso Triple action and bore paste, accompanied with wipe out patch out. I don’t think it’s the Thoro clean, but it is a newer product. Once I’m done cleaning I run a patch of alcohol followed by a few dry patches.

If I only fire a few rounds 30 or less I won’t clean, or if I’m using it for hunting predators on my property I’ll leave it fouled only taken a shot once a week or two weeks.

Im wondering if my last hunt caused it. It was about 20degrees out and I was out with my rifle for about 2hours. I brought the rifle and all my gear back into my 68 degree house. I am thinking condensation in the barrel then sitting for a week and a half may be the culprit.
I discovered after going to load a round and take a shot. I had trouble closing the bolt but then it closed. After firing the round I had a super sticky bolt. I took a video of the bore camera images. Did some before and after a very light cleaning. Pitting looked way worse prior to cleaning. I thought a chunk was missing.
I reached out to gun smith. He asked how the brass looked and it was fine. So I’m going to shoot a few rounds to see how it is.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Conflicting reccomendations about break in and cleaning routine

Hi guys! One question. I recently bought a custom rifle with a bartlein 5r 1:10 308 barrel.

The gunsmith who put it togheter is a very reputable smith, one of the best in Italy. He also accurized and prepared precision rifles for italian SOF. I trust him quite a bit after having tried a few other smiths with less than ideal results.

I have never been obsessed with cleaning routine and i have never broke a barrel in but he suggested me some very detailed cleaning and breaking in procedures for this cut rifled barrel.

1) The breaking in procedure is maybe too much, involving 8 steps and using copper remover and carbon remover and more than 20 patches for every cycle. He suggests to do that every round for 3 rounds and then 1 time every 5 rounds for 20 rounds. To me it seems too much to do at a public range.
2) he suggested me to fully clean the bore after every hunting, which means every week for me. I have always cleaned my hunting rifles every 20 rounds or so or when i was planning not to shoot it for at least a few weeks. I preferred to avoid possible issues related to clean bore shots, which can obviously affect POI slightly. I said this to him and he told me to just use some carbon remover if I didn't want to fully clean it after each hunt. I have never had a rust or an accuracy problem.

I noticed most hunters and also many members here don't do break in and clean the rifle sporadically or anyway not after every hunting.

What do you think about this suggestions? To me it seems like using this rifle will become a second job ahah!
Do you have some cut rifled custom barrels? if yes, how do you take care of them?

Thanks
Simone

2025 SHOT Show Optics

I'm sure I'm not catching everything here, but these are the items that have been released or announced this month with my thoughts and comments based on what I've heard so far.

  • Schmidt & Bender FFP version of Meta 3-18x42 with FML-TR1 type reticle - this could prove to be a really nice option with PM II turrets and alternative to some of the smaller MPVO's, at 44.5' FOV at 3x for the SFP version if they keep the FFP close this might be an impressive alternative to the 2.5-20 scopes. At around 27oz this could shake some things up, but sounds like we need to wait until summer for this one.
  • ZCO 2-10x30 MPVO single turn turret with 12mrad up and 2mrad below zero. A very expensive MPVO but I also imagine along with the price tag comes the best optical performance we have seen yet for this range. Coupled with the new reticles that are the best FFP reticles I've seen to date for MPVO these could prove very promising!
  • Leupold new CMR-Mil reticle for 2-10x30. Okay, so it took Leupold 2 years to bring a usable MPVO reticle to market and I still think the reticle could use some improvements, apparently Leupold doesn't think anyone will be dialing this scope because wind holds are essentially non-existing on the main horizontal line, at least they could have given us dots if they didn't want to run the line through the horseshoe.
  • Primary Arms PLxC 2.5-20x48 - this could be pretty exciting. PA is known for punching above their class in terms of optical-mechanical performance and I expect this new 2.5-20 will impress, but the bigger question is the reticles, the Athena G2 and Neptune just seem way too busy which leaves the DEKA G2 which could be really nice especially if it works at 2.5x, but that's a big if.
  • Primary Arms PLxC 4.5-36x56 - while I am excited about the 2.5-20 not so much with this 4.5-36, similar to Kahles, why use 8x erector for competition oriented scope, with already strong competition from numerous outstanding 6-36x56 designs, I'm not sure what appeal of going down to 4.5x is? Maybe there is some hidden market I am not seeing?
  • Kahles K540i 5-40x56 Ultra Wide Angle eyepiece - after almost 20 years of their questionable patent, Swarovski finally takes advantage of the ultra wide angle eyepiece. However, why the 8x erector? The K328i wasn't the best option to start with, so more excitement over this one for sure. With this scope aimed at the competition community I just don't know many who've been asking for such a high erector, instead the community tends to prefer more forgiving designs. Did Kahles engineers figure out some kind of optical formula magic or will this scope struggle to be as forgiving as its counterparts at the price point? Would love to see this side by side with the ZCO 8-40x56, TT 7-35x56 and March Gen2 5-42x56... if I can source or fund some of these I may try to review these later this year.
  • Burris XTR PS 3.3-18x50mm and 5.5-30x56 - using their new HUD gives Revic a run for the money, looks like Burris may have even improved upon the knurling which was one of my biggest gripes in previous releases. The HUD looks very promising and the new clickless turret sounds interesting. Consider me impressed, I may look to review one at some point as I've always liked the idea of HUD where I don't have to break cheekweld for changes.
  • Leapers scopes from Taiwan. Price is pretty high. Not sure if the market is ready for Taiwanese scopes at this price point, but I imagine they are impressive for the price and may be worth looking into.
  • Meprolight scopes from Taiwan. Similar to above on Leapers, maybe same OEM?
  • Telson optics 5-32x56 Japanese mfr - starting to see more and more companies pop up with options, unless they are priced right not sure how many people will take a chance on them.
  • SAI 10 1-10x24 finally makes its debut, I've been talking about this one for a couple years now but have been told "no", well now it's reality and it's very short and very light, possibly the lightest 1-10 on the market. The SAI 6 is my favorite 1-6 LPVO so I have high hopes for this SAI 10 as long as ATI didn't cut too many corners to make it so short and so light.
  • Apex 1-10x24 LPVO assembled in USA - interesting that this Canadian company felt they needed to assemble in the USA, the decision was likely made before Trudeau decided to become a hermit and live out the rest of his exile in Saskatchewan.
  • US Optics X Line - yay, more scopes from China... (that was a joke by the way) come on USO, you used to be a dominant force in the high end scope world, let's get some new and innovative designs for your higher end series.
  • Meopta under new ownership (2023?), revamping product line, MeoForce DF is new tactical line, these could be really good.
  • Primary Arms HTX-1 enclosed RDS, completely made in USA even the glass! Lock deck height to co-witness with standard height irons. This could bring some serious competition to Trijicon and Aimpoint, but pricing the optic close to these major competitors who have already established a solid name for themselves along with military contracts may hinder sales a bit. But it is nice to see someone besides Vortex AMG going full MAGA!
  • Apex Vapor 1-4x22 Prismatic - clever design with built in multiplier, wonder if it would work with NODS?
  • Zerotech 1-4 prism (motorized zoom) what on earth?
  • EOTech compact SFP 3-9x with ACOG compatible mount but with strange MOA reticle - EOTech continues to show they don't understand the market, not sure this is a scope that a bunch of hunters have been asking for, I assume it's going to be pretty finicky but maybe my assumptions are wrong. I think EOTech could help this model with a mil/mil version and a reticle that works better for the gas gun crowd.
  • Hi-Lux has super short scopes in 3-12 and 4-16 - wonder if these are same OEM as GPO which also has super shorts in the same mag ranges... coincidence? Either way, I'm not sure yet where these super short designs fit in, I expect them to be pretty finicky and not have the greatest reticles for low mag use, but who knows, maybe we'll all be surprised.
Feel free to add your thoughts, comments or additions for any daytime optics I may have missed.

ARC Xylo - wood cheek piece?

Recently picked up a used ARC Xylo chassis, and so far I'm liking it a lot. Got the 'large' grip for it, and like it even more ;)

Decided to get some wood m-lok slot covers in walnut to match the grip... and got to thinking that a wood cheek piece really finish out the 'look' that I have pictured in my mind. I spoke with the guy @ ARC on the phone briefly and they said they knew people had done it, but didn't have any solid/specific leads on who to contact.

I dabble a little with woodworking myself, but I'm more the hand-tool (saw / plane / chisel / rasp / file) kind of woodworker... while I probably *could* make something that would fit and work, I'm not sure the final product would match the other parts and 'look' right, if ya know what I mean ;)

Anyone here either have or made a wood cheek piece for their Xylo (or other chassis) and able to give some leads, or even just tips?
