Other vintage rifle forums? (for son)

I’m not a vintage gun guy, but my son is. He fools around a bit on the Reddit threads but I’ve told him that, by and large, Reddit sucks.

Reddit usernames/posts often wink in and out, and one has a hard time ascertaining the reliability and accuracy of info given there.

➡️ Can you dudes recommend me some good forums out there on post-black powder rifles? I don’t know where else to ask this question and cannot quickly evaluate a forum’s quality.

He likes guns in the Krag .30-40 and 1883 trapdoor Springfield timeframe (the more complicated the loading mech, the better for him lol).

Btw, his interest in this area started via Battlefield 1, the WWI video game. The game is quite fun, and the ammo loading sequences are apparently accurate. Just by playing that game he can manipulate old rifles in the gun stores! He is over 18yrs old, btw.

Our Prosperity is Killing Us. - Better explained than I could

I have been a firm believer for quite some time that our culture and our country as a whole is withering. It is a combination of factors that are rooted to the very prosperity that we worked so hard to achieve. Unfortunately a large part of the human nature bell curve can tend to be greedy and lazy assholes.

I've tried to make my argument for this but my own words always seem to fall short.
FF to a friend posting a link to a Bad Cattitude article about this very thing on Substack. Written as an expansion and reply to The Drunk Republican, I think he says it perfectly.

I copied the text from the article, stripped the pictures and ads out of it and have pasted it below.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FERTILIZING THE MORON FARM

The other day, gatopal™ “the drunk republican” was pointing out one of the odd contradictions of modernity.

1755831805260.png

But i wonder: is this a contradiction at all? I suspect it is not. I suspect it is, in fact, a sort of emergent property from plenty and wealth and the societal and individual incentives that seem to come with them.

Let us explore this emergent stupidity excursion as, like all such phenomenon, this highly complex and varied structure appears as though it may be well explained by only a few simple causal drivers.

Consider the possibility that the advent of moronical modernity finds its roots in a simple tenet of economics:

when, all else equal, the price of something drops, people choose to consume more of it.

the price of being moronical declined and so consumption of this "good" increased.

Pre-enlightenment, people were poor and life had more notable tendencies toward "nasty, brutish, and short."

It was a time full of severe selectors any of which would both cull you from the herd and assure future generations that genes like yours would not be around to commit further foibles.

The price of moronicality on both the individual and the societal levels was severe and rapid. A world near the edge of its structural carrying capacity to support its humans is a world with small margin for error.

Didn’t lay in enough food or firewood this winter? Guess what happens now.

Allow the nature of your society to become inconsistent with human flourishing and supportive of dependence and predation, and guess what happens then?

How many who fell for “communism could totally work if we just get the right people in charge this time!” are no longer with us to fall prey again?

Such calamity used to be near instant. Now it is a slow burn through the sizable fat reserves of the once replete civilizational success that made everyone so comfortable in the first place.

The “plenty” of the post enlightenment removed these penalties . . . even replacing them with welfare state subsidy.

That's how you fertilize a moron farm.

It's also how you drive and enable antisocial behavior and open up a society to conquest and collapse.

Concern about MK22 handguard cracking during first barrel change

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with the Barrett MK22, because I was honestly surprised and think it’s worth discussing.

I own an MK22 with relatively light use (under 200 rounds). Recently, I purchased a 7.62 barrel conversion kit together with the official MK22 armorer’s tool kit directly from Barrett. When I went to install the new barrel for the very first time, using the supplied 140 in-lbs torque limiter and the Torx Plus T30 bit exactly as marked on the receiver, the handguard cracked while tightening to spec.

This was the first time I ever swapped the barrel, using the correct official tools and following the manual step by step. I didn’t expect something like this to happen on a rifle of this quality.

I’m already reaching out to Barrett for warranty support, but I also wanted to post here to see if other MK22 owners have run into similar problems. Even if it’s a rare defect, I think it’s important to share so others know what to look out for.

Has anyone else experienced this, or heard of MK22 handguards cracking during barrel changes?

Thanks for reading.

Work compensation --how would you handle this?

I work in a sub-specialty of tech in a senior management position, with both managerial and engineering responsibilities. It's my first management role and I've been with the company a bit over two years. For later consideration, our niche industry pays better than usual and a significant portion of my total compensation is the performance bonus. We just had our yearly reviews and while I did get a small increase in base salary (basically COL) and an increase over last years bonus (about 5%), I feel like it fell short of the mark (and I'll explain why).

Last year, one of my direct reports was extremely problematic to the point where I had several conversations with my boss (the CTO) and the firm managing partners on how to proceed and handle the situation. It came to a head a bit before review time and it was decided this employee would be let go at the end of the month. Since this employee had been there for some years, the managing partners decided to give additional salary increases to my reports, on top of their performance review increases, in order to keep them happy and entice them to stay.

Well, another team member left for a bigger position at a bigger firm just a few days later. My boss and the managing partners again gave the remaining team members another increase to keep them happy and in hopes they wouldn't bail.

My boss, the CTO, called me into his office and basically explained we needed to keep the remaining guys happy because they'd been there for awhile, were good employees, I was new, and they had knowledge I would need. He also explained that I didn't receive an increase because as senior management my comp is more bonus driven, and he told me explicitly I'd be taken care of on the next bonus.

Well, about two weeks later my boss died, at his desk. Now I'm down 2 guys on my team, and my boss, who had been there 10+ years. My guys were given YET ANOTHER increase, and again, I was not.

Over the next year, I interviewed dozens of candidates to fill my two spots, found them and trained them. I worked with the new CTO to get him up to speed with what he needed to know and helped him understand the intricacies of my side of what we do. During this whole time, I kept multiple major projects on track, finished them, planned and execute a couple more, and overall just made a significant amount of engineering and management progress. I took over, unfucked, planned and executed a project they had stalled on for almost 2 years because the previous staff couldn't get it over the hump and it was dead in the water.

So now, at review time, I was well expecting to be handsomely rewarded for my accomplishments under extraordinary circumstances and I honestly do not feel like I was. As I mentioned, my base only increased about 3.8% and my bonus about 5%. My 3.8% increase, in real terms, is less than what my most junior guy got as a "please don't leave us" increase.

I'm seriously considering going back and asking that my compensation be reviewed with consideration for the circumstances in which my accomplishments were made, and also noting that my team were given raises to stay and I was to be "taken care of" at bonus time.

Am I out of line here? What would you do in this situation?

ETA: While I was conducting review for one of my reports, I said that I really appreciated how he stuck with me through the two guys leaving and CTO passing. My boss (new CTO) even made a comment to the effect of that that was a good point, and he had not considered that. So that again leads me to believe that my unique situation was not fully considered when my compensation was adjusted.

Let's talk budget optics..

It's been a long ass time since I have touched a budget optics last one was in the 90s with a ss10×42m i currently run Nightforce leupold, trijicon and the likes.

I plan on picking up the savage 10 fcp in hs precision stock in 308 when I get back home next week. The rifle will be because nostalgia . My daughter says she wants a ling range rig, but I dint feel like spending 1k-3k on an optic for her for this rifle while I teach her

So please educate me on budget optics currently on the market. I see Arken, dnt, lower end vortex and more out there. All so much going on in the market.

I'd like a 5-25 ffp or similar with illuminated reticle if possible. Prefer a full christmas tree illuminated reticle if possible

It sells new for $2,800 plus tax

Selling For: $2,200.00 OBO

And Yet, Another Rifle Build (yawn)

After 8 months, a new NRL Light Open Build is a reality. 11.3 lbs as it sits on the tripod. This was/is an experiment. Carbon Fiber vs Heavily Fluted barrel for weight. Only 20 rounds through it, but I think it's a keeper. If there's any interest, I'll post the details. 5 shots bore sighting / 5 shots group 1 = 0.76 MOA. 5 shots Groups 2 and 3 as shown. Jury still out on the Leupy scope. Reticle is a little too fine for my eyes. But we'll play around with it.

Tiger stripe vet tape on the scope decreases dispersion / increases accuracy and precision by 33.45%. Or so I'm told by very reliable sources. And yes, this is a bit of a vanity post.

Target Analysis BA7 139A405-411F0 Groups 2 and 31 8-17-25.jpg

Hey ... it's $200

Just curious why anybody would buy a suppressor when they'll all cost $200 less starting Jan-1.
That's like paying a 20% premium just to get it a little sooner.
I'm planning on buying a couple, but not until the new law kicks in.
Easy for me to say ... given the status of my "Can Case" below.
But hey ... $200 is $200 ... right?

All the heavy-hitters at one point or another, have advertised that they'd "... pay the tax stamp fees ..." via a $200 discount. Hoping they've built that into their margins, and we can continue to find sales where there is (a) no NFA fee, and (b) a $200 sale price. Might not be all the time, but occasional on-sale cans after Jan-1 could be a real value.

You can, after all, NEVER have enough suppressors. At least that's what I tell the jerk on the bench next to me shooting his 338-LM with a big muzzle break that literally blows my hat off my head on every shot.

Firearms Surgeon Concealable Sniper Rifle

Selling this CSR as I just don't shoot it anymore.

It is chambered in .308 and by my rough round count has +-4,800 rounds through it, 99% of that being Federal GMM.

This rifle shoots incredibly well, tiny tiny groups.

It is black underneath the krylon, and will include the unused Keyslot rail along with the Area 419 ARCA.

From what I am told these rifles were made for some sort of SOF unit in a few configurations, some with RACS chassis, some with AI chassis and now Cadex chassis. Supposedly this has a Bartlein barrel, but not 100% sure.

Feel free to reach out with questions.

$4,000 shipped, open to offers including trades.

SOLD

Thanks, Luke
