Wild ES with Tac 223 Load

Ok, So Im pretty new to loading rifle ammo. Just recently loaded up some 223 rounds for the Ar using Tac. I did some different charges around the lower end of the chart. All rounds loaded function fine and sense its just blaster ammo the accuracy was fine for what its being used for as well. My issue was the ES was 120 fps. I know tac isnt very temp stable but that seems like alot of variance. Im also in AZ so the morning temps were around 78 and midday 101.

What might I be missing thats causing the ES to be so high?
Im using FL sizing die with 21st mandrel about .002 tension with a slight crimp after seating because I was getting some bullet movement when charging rounds.

Loading on a dillon 650 using dillon powder drop.

Im trying to get better at loading these before I try and load some 77gr OTM's

Thanks in advance for any help

When do you say, well that is as good as it is going to shoot.

The rifle in question is a "low number" 1903, with a 10-18 barrel. So chances are it has not seen much use in any of the world wars. The barrel is in good shape for its age.

According to my research:

Standard accuracy for the 1903 was generally around a 2-4 inch grouping at 100 yards.

And mine is running in the 4" range no matter what I try, heavy bullets, light bullets, deeper seating, just a kiss off the lands. The only thing I have not tried are hot loads, right smack dab in the middle of the manuals is where I have been loading them. I even tried some "youth" loads with 125gr bullets. Nothing will move it below 3". I have also tossed the powder drawer at it with no real differences.

I think this old girl is what she is. I bet I have done 200 rounds of testing 5 to 10 rounds at a time. I have 25 of the best so far loaded up, cleaned it to where it is likely better then it was when it left the factory, and as soon as my darn back calms down I will run it out and see how she does. My trapdoor groups better than this old gal.

Question is, two fold. Any suggestions on something I might have missed, and two when do you say.....well this is as good as she does.

In practical terms it is minute of man at 100 all day long.....and really that is what it was made to do.

1st group after bore sight/zeroing scope

Despite getting my first long range rifle in December 2024, it took me this long to take it to the range.

This was my first time bore sighting a rifle & zeroing a scope. Honestly, I am ashamed that it took me almost two hours and maybe 30 rounds to get this done and the final group at 100 yards looked like this:
IMG_7168.jpeg

I used Hornady American Gunner BTHP 6.5 CM 140 grain ammo. I’ve seen some amazing groups on the Hide and hoping to get some feedback and helpful advice on how to improve.

Thanks in advance!

Why do people load so hot?

I'm not too new to reloading but only really getting serious into rifle this year. If I were to read the forums, here and elsewhere, it would seem that the method to work up a load is to start in the middle of the data and then work up until your gun starts doing fucked up things to your brass. What's the deal with this advice? It clearly ignores the measured pressure limits, it's likely not going to blow up your gun but it will reduce brass and barrel life and likely reduce your precision. Is it just the natural tendency for monkeys to max things out to the point that they break? Why don't people just go to a larger cartridge if they want to stuff too much powder in? What am I missing?

6mm Mini Short Mag

Ok so this is a stretch and a bit of just playing around. While messing about on Chat Gpt I gave it a proper asking it to create the most ballistically superior cartridge that will fit in a mini length action (Howa mini/ CZ 527) in the 6mm bore size. And it came up with one called the 6mm mini short magnum or 6mm msm. These are the theoretical specs it created:
Concept: A radically shortened, fat-body “WSM-style” case (~1.60–1.65" case length) with either a rebated rim (.445" to use Grendel bolt) or a true magnum bolt face (.532") if your mini action can be re-bolted/opened up. Seat 105–115 gr bullets to ≤ 2.30–2.35" COAL.

Sketch specs (target values)

  • Option A (rebated): .445" rim, ~.530" body, 35–40° shoulder
  • Option B (mag face): .532" rim, ~.550" body (bolt/lug thrust rises a lot)
  • Case length: ~1.60–1.65"
  • COAL: ≤ 2.35" (you’ll need custom magazine/follower)
  • Capacity (gross): mid-40s to low-50s gr H₂O after seating
Potential performance (24")

  • 115 gr class: ~3,050–3,150 fps possible on paper
  • 105–110 gr class: ~3,150–3,250 fps

I basically want to know how possible this is, can it be created from an existing cartridge like 243 wssm, and should I build one for shits and gigs instead of a 6mm ARC. My thoughts: if I’m already going to pour money into a full custom rifle with dies and components for the ammo why not go all out? Main downside for me is no factory ammo available, and possible feeding issues. I wouldn’t mind going to a short action but want to avoid just jumping for a 6 prc or a 6 creed just because I want to be difficult on myself.

Movie Theater Nobody 2

Saw it this afternoon while my wife’s still out of town…have to take advantage of that “Class B Bachelor” status when able, LoL.

Bottom line: Good movie…not great, but good. I’d say it was very good, but not compared to the first one which was way better IMHO, so just “good” for me. They tried too hard to force the other characters into the plot, and it just felt, well, too forced.

Still, it was very entertaining and definitely worth seeing on the big screen at least once.

Off topic, but it cracked me up when they had an ad for Bulleit Bourbon immediately after a PSA for drunk driving! Everyone in the theater literally LoL’d! :ROFLMAO:

Newsom plans to steal the House

So California has Gerymandered all Republican districts out of existance... and has called a special election for November to fill seats in the new districts. Which will tip the House into Democrat hands in as little as three months.

Methinks it's time to find about 10 corrupt democrats in Red States and jail them... and have their seats filled by gubernatorial appointment. Also have Ethics Committee remove about 10 more for violations of stock trading and leaking documents and other crimes.

They want to go Banana Republic... let's go Banana Republic!

Thoughts after vacation

Spent the last few weeks driving around the country trying to see nature. A few highlights:

  • I really fucking hate motorcycles. I'm 10 miles out in the wilderness and can still hear those faggots.
  • Why is every other lot in WY a junkyard. Like seriously wtf.
  • We are doomed as a species. Its only a matter of time. Guy tried to start a fight with me because he was in line for a stupid boat and I was hiking past. "This is the line for the boat" "I'm not taking the boat"
  • Fuck Canada. (Went looking for advice on Banff and it was some lib cuck bitching about America. F that noise. I'll go visit the Badlands instead. (Plus my favorite park has been overrun)
  • Fuck National Parks. So damn overcrowded. You can't even park after 9AM. So just get up early! yeah you get about 3 hours of park use per day that way before the shit gets zerged.
  • Control your crotch monkeys. Yeah my 50 YO ass is slow going up the trail. I can also yeet your little shit off the cliff if he keeps mouthing off. I try and be polite and let people pass. Even my patience has limits.
  • After listening to hours of true crime podcasts on the drive:
    • Media has always been ass
    • Medical laws exist for a reason (The number of quacks who turn out to be serious killers is amazing)
      • Still wouldn't trust a "real" doctor as far as I can throw them.
  • Can you idiots pick up your trash for once in your life?
  • I'm booking an elk hunt cause those fuckeres hid for 2 weeks. Pronghorn/Bison? We cool. Moose, you're next. Bears: I'd hide my ass in the woods too. Stay fluffy boss.
  • Buy more ammo
  • I am an old cranky bitch.
Carry on.

Firearms GA Precision Rock 260 Rem (reduced $)

If you ever wanted to add a very cool classic to your GAP collection here’s your chance!

Also have 3 boxes of the old Black Hills loaded 139 gr Lapua Scenar ammo that shoots well through these rifles. Have another partial box (12 rds) of Berger 130 gr hunting vld. (You pay shipping on the ammo)

Asking $3500 for the package (I’ll split shipping/Insurance w/you to your FFL)

My old Hide account was dormant for years and when reactivated the only thing that transferred was the date I registered back in 2009. My old username was “Heber” and I’m on the “good guy” list from years ago. If you receive an unsolicited DM about this it’s probably a scam, I’ll only reply. Thx.

Seating question

Hello all.

When I go to seat bullets I’m noticing a substantial difference in the amount of force required to seat them. I measured all the case necks and they’re all the same. I’m using forster collet dies with a rock chucker press. I know the best way is to use an electronic press with expanding mandrel dies, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon. I lube all my cases necks with imperial dry neck lube, and am wondering if varying amounts of that can make a difference in the amount of force required to seat the bullets, or if it isn’t a factor at all. I know one of the keys to accuracy is consistent neck tension, and I’m afraid that’s where my hang up is with extreme accuracy. I’m currently shooting just under 1 MOA, but know that several of my guns are capable of more than that.

Optics WTS/WTT Tangent Theta

Interested in trading my Tangent Theta 525P with a gen3xr reticle in a Spuhr 4002C. I’m wanting to trade for a FDE ZCO 5-27 with a MPCT2x or 3x reticle with a little bit of cash. I am not interested in any other optics or reticles. The TT comes with the original box etc and is in excellent shape. 3900 shipped, I take most forms of payment

*diving board on the Spuhr is not included*

The evolution of the 300 Blackout - great day at the range with Blackarc Munitions and Hornady

It is no secret I prefer the 6.5 Grendel to all other intermediate calibers in the AR-15 platform, but I lusted after the 300 Blackout since it was the 300 Whisper. I was a wee lad playing Rainbow Six and couldn't afford the freight JD Jones demanded, but I ran wild with a virtual Whisper.

When AAC announced the 300 Blackout, I was an early adopter - I immediately bought a 9" AR and 16" Model 7. When the twist rate sped up, I sold the 9" and bought a 12.5" AAC MPW and began the stupidly expensive process of SBR'ing and stripping down and re-imagining the Model 7. It now has a 12.5" Krieger barrel with a 1:7.5" twist, sits in a Bell & Carlson Youth Medalist, has mag fed bottom metal and a Jewell trigger with a Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 on top. It was not a straight line to that end result - but, I've ended up with a laser beam of a kids rifle, and my sons love it.

The 12.5" MPW was my go-to pig killer for years. I used Barnes 110 gr Tac XT copper black tip to decent effect, but Clint Smith told me on the front end - hits like the kitchen sink up close, has a rainbow trajectory and is lacking at the pot of gold end. Once I transitioned to the 6.5 Grendel, I never seriously picked up the 300 Blackout again.

And den... recently I heard someone speaking of newer, hotter 300 BO ammo, specifically the Blackarc Munitions 110 Gr Tac XT. It was said to make 2300 out of a 10.x" barrel, which got my attention as that led me to think it would likely be 100-150 fps faster than my previous ammo, and I'm thrilled to say I was correct. Some research led me to also pick up the Hornady 110 gr V-Max. Today, I got them out to the range and I feel like my 300's have a new lease on life.

Barrels are weird. My AAC has a 12.5", my Model 7 has a 12.5" - The AAC shot the Blackarc as fast as 2,370 FPS, but the Hornady wouldn't crack 2,340. The Model 7 wouldn't get past 2,320 with the Blackarc, but got as hot as 2,380 with the Hornady.

🤷‍♀️

Lil Wayne told us it would all work out, and it did, because the Blackarc shot exceptionally well out of the MPW and the Hornady was a laser beam out of the Model 7. Using an ACOG with 4x and no eye box isn't exactly a precision circumstance - but - the attached photos were both shot at 100 yards, and it makes me think it would be a sub MOA situation with a 20X scope as opposed to an ACOG where I was just trying to hold steady on an geometric shape and keep the cross evenly distributed. The Model 7, with the benefit of a Krieger and 9X magnification was same holing at 100.

TLDR - Blackarc and Hornady are making 300 Blackout 110 gr ammo that are knocking on 2,400 fps out of 12.5" barrels and shooting very straight in the process. I am going to leave the Grendel at the house next we chase pigs in the brush, and look forward to my youngest getting a white tail with the Model 7 this fall. This ammo is appreciably faster than what I've tried before by 100-150 FPS.

In other wonderfully serendipitous news, the velocity Blackarc delivers means it is as good as real world gets when it comes to matching up with a 300 BO ACOG. I shot the MPW back to 400 yards today - velocity is about 1,370 fps at 400 yards, expansion threshold is 1,350 - elevation was dead on at 200, 300, and 400 and group sizes range from excellent to sufficient.

Can you bed without using any Loctite?

Might sound stupid and if so my apologies.

But I was thinking of rolling the dice on a 8.3 BA Hanson barrel in 300 Blackout. While I would like to shim it if needed, I also want this barrel to be a place holder for a better barrel down the line if this one doesn't shoot decent.

I just didn't want to Loctite this barrel to my upper in the chance that I want to change it later.
