Fenix ammo - again

1715865107962.jpeg

Posted before about this ammo company local to me - and as many pointed out their prices are a bit on the high side . But I buy from them because I like the ownership and their products and love their spicy advertising. Like this Jem.

Being able to pick it up, not pay and shipping and not having to worry about my ammo order being rained on , lost or stolen offsets some of the price . And they regularly run pretty good deals .
Anyhow just figured I’d share

Serious question, no flame war needed or wanted

So, a friend is talking to what I have been told is a serious outfit about buying a custom gasser topped with... wait for it... a Valdata scope.

I've been around a while, I bought the first gen SH 3-18 (and it failed), and have owned at least 10 IORs (none any longer) so I am not a newcomer asking a stupid question.

I also used the search function AND googled the topic. My question to the learned folk here: has Valdata overcome its issues and become a reputable option in the US? And is Val still there?

The friend told me about the choice he already made, so I didn't offer feedback, but am now genuinely interested. IOR always had good glass, the MP-8 is still among my favorite reticles for certain tasks, and tracking was usually good, and turrets were hit-n-miss for feel and function.

Did they drop the "IOR" and, with it, shed the bad parts?

And, truly, this is a serious question...

What say you?

To me she was done in Nov of 2008. Some friends say the F/F event on 9/11, yet others say it started dying in Dallas with JFK.

Trauma kit advice…

Yes, I did a search and THIS thread came up. In it, QuikClot was mentioned but all I see it offered in are some pretty large strips. I would like to know if the BleedStop powder is good for small wounds. Fucked up and managed to run a blade about an inch deep into the soft tissue between my thumb and index finger. Ended up with a cut about an inch wide / deep. Didn’t have much on hand here if it had been any worse.

I will be putting together a better first aid kit for my home and vehicle.

Rifle Scopes Viper 5-25x50 HD

Received a new Vortex Viper 5-25x50 FFP scope a few days ago withMIL type reticule

I am truly impressed by this scope:
The optics are outstanding
The 10mils per turn are great and clicks very distinct and secure
The reticule is easy to use and not over done like some. No screen door effect with complicated background
The size and weight of this scope are perfect for either an SPR, hunting or DMR rifle

I heard one complaint of eye box so I went through my normal set up on my rifle. Getting perfect placement of scope front to back for best eye relief
Set reticle for sharpest image on highest power
Then adjust focus for distance

I found the eye box good in size and easy to use. I found nothing wrong in this area at all

Ran the tall target test and adjustments were accurate and repeatable

I am very impressed by this scope and just super happy it’s in the price point it is.

I will use this scope a bunch and report back but so far I like it a lot

SubSafe, the product I never knew I was missing.

For the life of me- I couldn't figure out which forum to post this in, but I settled on the Armory (mods are welcome to move it if I was mistaken). But I wanted to talk about the SubSafe product briefly and give full disclosure that I have zero interest in the sales/success of the product.

Anywho- the SubSafe was kind of a game changer (at least for me) over the past year with having a sub at the ready in the cooler during a match. I'd place it along the same lines of the "bino bandit" product of something that you might not have known that existed but ended up being awesome. Do your own homework of course but dang if this hasn't been clutch over the past year for me to have in my cooler during matches for a quick lunch.

Glad we don’t have these people here

Movie Theater How's this for being old...

Watched "First Blood" in the theater almost 42 years ago.

Now in 1982, when it came out... if we dial back another 42 years...

42 years earlier...

Gone with The Wind had been in theaters for more than a year.

Pearl Harbor was more than a year away.

The Battle of Britain was happening.

Operation Barbarossa (invasion of the Soviet Union by Hitler) was a year away.

Dunkirk is evacuated.

Auschwitz is opened.

The Blitz of London occurs.

Want to feel old?

Think about that...

Sirhr

I'll file this under Who The F**K cares

Most likely just lairs like all the others that said they were going to leave.

Small rifle primer brass?

Am I throwing good money after bad by considering a switch to SRP 308 win brass? Large rifle primers seem to be unobtanium, and my supply is dwindling. SR primers aren’t exactly cheap, but availability seems to have normalized. I have a pretty good supply of LRP 308 win cases, but am thinking I should reserve my LR primers for long action cartridges like 30-06 and 270 win. Anyone regret going to SR primers for 308, or even 6.5 creedmoor?

Eject! Eject! Eject! Is anything other than 3:00-4:00 OK?

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: “High-end” rifle works flawlessly, runs like a sewing machine, eats everything, but ejects rounds at 0130-0200 regardless of gas block setting. Is this a problem? Or who cares as long as it runs perfectly otherwise?

THE WHOLE NINE YARDS:

So… took an all-factory Noveske N4 G3 rifle and made it better, faster, stronger.

Put on Form-1 SBR.

Removed factory 13.7” with P/W Flaming Pig, replaced with 14.5” Proof CF “Wylde” coupled with the new JP D2 52-position (!!!) adjustable gas block.

Replaced 15” NSR3 rail with 13.5” NSR3 rail.

Replaced all lower parts with $400 in V7 Titanium bits — ‘cuz everyone needs an $80 safety selector and $100 ejection port cover.

Replaced buffer tube with V7 Lithium Aluminum tube, ‘cuz why not?

Replaced factory trigger with SSA-X.

Replaced Noveske BCG with JP Chromed LMOS.

Replaced Noveske buffer with JP SCS.

Cerakoted entire rifle in Gen2 HIR-265 (IR signature-reducing coating for NODs fun) — upper, lower, handrail, buffer tube, shiny bits like door cover and takedown pins, etc.

Added HUX flash hider and 7.62 Ti (pre-Flow) can.

Popped an FDE ATACR 1-8 with offset RMR-06 in C1 mount on top and called it a day.

Will take pics soon for posterity.

Anyhoo… with all that said, we finished the rifle on the Thursday before I took it to CR2’s Light Fighter course the very next day. First order of business was to get the gas system perfectly adjusted. The HUX can doesn’t have much backpressure at all, and the gun will never really be shot unsuppressed, but we did try it both with and without — zero difference.

JP’s new D2 AGBs have 52 positions for adjustment. Their instructions say to close it off entirely, then back-out 12 clicks, or roughly one full turn, and start there. They say the gun probably will NOT cycle at 12 clicks, and they were correct. They say to adjust in 3-click increments, which we did. After the first adjustment (15-clicks), the gun ejected, but just barely at about 0100. Went another 3 clicks and it was better, about 0130-0200. At this point I figured additional adjustment would push angle of eject toward the Orthodox Religious Dogma-Approved 0300-0400 angle, but no matter how may clicks we dialed-in, the pattern didn’t change — again, with or without the can.

Given this behavior, I figured the best position was at 18-21 clicks, since it cycled just fine with everything from cheap 223 Wolf Gold as well as 855A1 and 262 Mod 1C and the much maligned AAC 77g OTM 556.

Took it to the 3-day LF course the very next day and it never gave the slightest hiccup all weekend, nailing IPSC steel at >650 yards like a Rock Star.

Shoots like Chantilly Whipped Cream — soft and smooth.

But that eject angle…

Assume it’s more related to the LMOS/SCS than the gas system?

Aside from the angle, is there any reason to mess with it? It’s just absolute perfection otherwise and I hesitate to pfutz with it by playing Rifle Jenga.

Major win for Tennessee land owners vs. Game wardens

Court ruled game wardens were pulling unconstitutional shenanigans when going onto private property without a warrant to place trail cameras, etc to surveil hunter activities.

Good article

Seating depth, what’s acceptable variation?

Running a rcbs matchmaster micrometer seating die (223). My load is right on the verge of being compressed. You can hear a kernel or two of powder when seating.

Out of my last batch of 100 rounds , about 70 rounds are right at my desired seating depth. Another 20 rounds or so, at within .001”, and then I got a handful that are .002-.003” seated too deep.

I am measuring these using a comparator and measuring cbto. My stem is not touching the meplat.

Who do some of these rounds seat deeper than others?

I use the same press, and when I fl size, they are all dead nuts on.

What do you consider acceptable tolerance for seating depth?
