Why do people load so hot?

I am gonna put some of yall into apoplexy.
These two loads are from a 20" 308 win at 150 yards today.
#1- 178 ELD, Alpha SRP brass, cci 450 and Varget. Average 2816fps.

The left hand hole is the cold bore (literally) since there is a 22 degree difference from where the rifle/ammo is to the outside where I shoot.

#2- 178 ELD, Alpha srp brass, cci 450 and Power Pro 2000MR. Average 2749fps.

These pieces of brass have 12 firings on them. All over book max. Still running strong. Annealed after every firing.
Is the POI that diffrent between the two loads?

I would be interested to see the actual pressure on the varget load. 😳😳 Mine will ejector mark lapau at 43g with the 178 a max at about 2700 in a 23".

I hardly mess with my 308. I need to rebarrel it to a good caliber. It's just not worth 44g of powder to lob potatoes. 🤣🤣🤣

Gunsmithing What are you guys using now days to clean and lube?

Simple, easy, and works better than anything product you can buy.

I have no idea what's in Automatic Transmission Fluid, but it also works as an amazing hack when sweating copper pipes. Just dampen a rag with ATF, and before you put the fitting on wipe the ends of the pipes and the fitting with the damp rag, it cleans it, and for some reason you don't need any flux. The solder seeps in an makes a perfect weld every time. Duhno why it works, but it does.

Is the .17HMR really much better than .22LR for varmints?

Not that people do it much but the farther out "long range wise" for a 17 hmr it gets the tougher it is to see misses and by then that 17 grainer has blown a lot in the wind.

Once in a while I'll run across interesting scenarios when shooting with friends. One involved my friend and his 17 hmr Contender carbine against me and my 22 cal pcp air rifle using 42gr swaged slugs.

To begin with my pcp air rifle is more precise that his 17 hmr is.
Also the G1 BC for my slug is a G1 .142.
So on a windy day at 250Y we were shooting at a coyote shaped steel about 15 wide and 7" from belly to back.
I hit it more than he did for these reasons,
#1 we couldn't tell exactly where he hit when he hit nor where he missed in the dirt "as often". Partially because a bunch of energy had been lost by then.
#2 even though the 17 hmr got there faster with much less drop the low BC of those 17 grainers made for them blowing in the wind much more.
That's a hard recipe to deal with way out there.

The SD on my pcp is really low like 4 fps, if that, which helps.
Like I mentioned it's more precise as well.
And my pcp is easier to shoot because it's a heavy target rifle and has a nice target stock.
I could see where the 42 grainer landed easier.
And the 42 grainers weren't affected by wind so much.
Velocity is 830 fps.

10 mph full value = 2.2 mils windage needed for the 17hmr at 250Y vs 1.6 mils for my pcp air rifle. It was blowing more than 10 mph the day we shot, maybe up to 15 mph or so.

Fun thing to think about isn't it?!

Unfortunately I think she is right. People trapped in the welfare system for generations aren't educated, don't have any skills, and don't have the work ethic (ethics in general) to survive on their own even in the freest and most prosperous nation on the planet, and that has been entirely by design starting with "The Great Society". Forcing them to become productive citizens cold turkey by taking away all their free stuff is only going to work for the ones who can adapt. Many or even most won't. We've been feeding a tiger so it doesn't eat us.

Most democrats in big liberal cities will tell you in private that all the welfare programs are to buy off poor black people so they don't try to take their stuff and rob/hurt them. The idea is to just give enough so they never get desperate. Desperation will only make some of them work. The rest will take the easiest way out of stealing.

Not saying I have a great idea to "fix" this, but the reality may not be like you think it do.

Gunsmithing What are you guys using now days to clean and lube?

I 180deg off all these guys. The old ways are the best ways. Not "safe" or wonderful to breathe acetone, but cleans down to the metal in one pass. Not safe to drink or bathe in either. I just want it to work and shorten or eliminate the time spent scrubbing, then protect it till the next time I'm shooting. All I've used all my life, and I can't sleep at night if my guns aren't completely clean. I'll lie awake thinking about it.

My recipe for Ed's Red:
1 part Dexron ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.
1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1
1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits,
1 part Acetone
1 part Kroil
1 part anhydrous Lanolin

I don't even know how many years ago I made the last batch, but there is still like a half gallon left and I shoot all the time. One batch will last years and years, but you have to keep it sealed because the acetone is a super-volatile and will evaporate. Most of this stuff is probably already in your garage, and you just have to measure it out.

I DO NOT use it on plastic fantastic parts, as I know it cuts wad residue in shotguns, so probably melts most plastic. The most expensive thing in it is probably the Kroil. You can buy a can of whatever for $20 or $30 or make a gallon that will last you years and years. I keep it in the shop in the small needle tip bottles used for head cement in fly tying. It doesn't react with whatever plastic that is...

, and glass dauber bottles.

If it's a gun I don't shoot often it gets waxed with Renaissance Wax.

I'm sure all these aerosol products work, but not any better than my stuff. Paint it on, wait a couple of minutes, wipe it off. One wet patch, wait a few minutes and follow it with few dry ones. Done, and completely clean.

Only thing it won't do is copper fouling...then Sweets 7.62 for me.
I got cancer just reading this. 😁. Joking. Sounds like a badass home brew.
