Reloading and Tuning my 16" AR-10

So, with your comparator distance setting case shoulders @ 1.620", how does that compare to the SAAMI minimum of 308 Win @ 1.630?

What comparator are you using?

Most Comparators will NOT give you a proper SAAMI distance reading. I have 3 different Comparators. Hornady, Sinclair and Derrico. When I take a 1.630" SAAMI minimum headspace gauge and measured them in my Comparators, I get 3 different measurements.

With the Hornady, I get 1.622", the Derrico is 1.628" and the Sinclair number is way off.

So, those individual numbers are equal the 1.630" SAAMI minimum.

I use those numbers to know where SAAMI minimum is. I then can set my resized brass shoulders to where I want them.

I have a number of 308 Win. rifles. AR 10's and bolt guns. In all of my rifles, none have a fired brass lengths go past 1.634".

For me, I can set my F/L die to resize case shoulders to the SAAMI minimum (1.630") and then be able to use that resized brass in ANY of my 308 rifles without oversizing.

There are only a couple of Comparator manufacturers that have their comparators machined to match the 1.630" distance.

There are two manufacturers of case shoulder measuring tools that are called "Mics" that do measure SAAMI minimum, the RCBS Precision Mic and the Whidden Mic are set to their "0" setting to be calibrated @ 1.630". I do have a RCBS Precision Mic in 308 Win. and when I have apiece of brass resized to the "0" mic setting it is at the 1.630" minimum distance.
When I take that piece of brass and measure the shoulder with the Hornady comparator, I get 1.622" and in the Derrico, I get 1.628".

So, my question to you is that 1.620" measurement you're getting with your comparator, how does that measurement relate to the actual SAAMI 1.630" minimum measurement?

If you're actually bumping your case shoulders .010" below minimum (1.620"), you are way oversizing your brass and you will be getting case head separations.

I haven't found the need to shoulder bump shorter than SAAMI minimum, even in my two 308 Win. M-1A's.

Many new reloaders get confused with comparator numbers and try to compare and relate those numbers to actual SAAMI numbers.

I'm curious as to how you determined to set you shoulders to your 1.620" measurement.

Reduced Recoil?

300 win mag and up have a stout recoil from the bench.

Since you hunt, have you used shooting sticks and shot the rifle standing?

When standing it's easier for you to move with the gun.

Shooting .338 win mag from the bench in my hunting rifle (no brake) is a lot.

Standing it's not too bad.

For bench, as others said, add weight.

Add a rail and 4-14 pounds of brass weights to the rail under the gun.
4-14lbs… I like your style

MPA Rifle rings or one peice scope mount?

Sorry old thread but I saw this comment and was just wondering why higher is the trend? If you aren't mounting a clip on thermal or NV what does mounting the scope higher do for you?

Personally for ergonomics I find after the cheek piece is adjusted having my head a 1/2" higher above my firing hand makes no difference. I have always tried to get the lowest rings possible but maybe I'm doing it wrong.
A more vertical head position with a “chin weld” is more comfortable and repeatable, especially once a shooter moves to a position more square behind the rifle, rather than bladed sideways like we were taught because all our precision shooting instructors used loop slings. It means your head position more similar across all shooting positions. It also means once the rifle butt moves toward the Center of your body, along with a proper butt that is behind the action, recoil moves the rifle back but not to the sides. This means you can spot your hit, or miss, and adjust more quickly. Most of us Gen X’ers learned shooting techniques from the early 1900’s.

Ukraine war Bullshit.

The flyover was a bad idea and fucking waste of taxpayer money and resources. Putin is fully aware of what our advanced aircraft are capable of doing. Trying to bully or intimidate him is just plain fucking stupid. What should be going on from the start is Trump having serious conversation with Putin about how to end the bs war.
Hillary and her red button  she liked to talk tough, showed just how out of her league she really is/was.
That shit was not for Putin. He, like every truly powerful man, is well above that crap. The flyover was for media purposes to give chubbies to the mental midgets that approach politics like pro sport’s rivalries. It’s all bullshit. Until the problem children end up still and steaming in a ditch, all this theatre represents zero reality.

2025 NCAA Football Survival Pool...Week 1

If you've never played before, this is a fun way to while away the upcoming college football season. In a nutshell, pick one team that hasn't lost yet. If they win you get to pick another team the next week. Lather, rinse, repeat. No prizes, just for fun. By the 8th or ninth week of the season, the number of undefeated teams usually gets down to 10 or 15, so you might want to save the top teams for deeper into the season.

Rules
1) Pick one college FBS (aka Division 1) team per week. (136 choices week 1!)
2) The team you pick MUST BE UNDEFEATED and PLAYING THIS WEEK.
3) Once you pick a team you MAY NOT PICK THEM AGAIN.
4) If your pick loses you're out. You only advance to the next week if your pick wins.
5) If you fail to pick in a given week, you're out.
6) Last player standing wins.
7) Picks must be posted in that week's thread.
8) If all the undefeated teams lose in a given week or no survivors can advance to the next week, the tie breaker is the player who posted earliest in that week's thread.
9) Each succeeding week, post your pick for that week, as well as those of your previous picks. This helps YOU not to repeat a pick.
10) If you decide to change a pick, don’t edit the original post, just make a new post. I use the last post you make for your pick. This will also affect tie breaker (Rule 8)
11) Be very clear with your pick. Follow the name format of ESPN Conference Standings. (i.e. OSU could be Ohio State, Oklahoma State, or Oregon State)
12) Schedule weeks are per ESPN.
13) Keeping up with your picks is part of the game. If someone picks a team that has a loss or is not playing that week, don't feel it is your civic duty to point out the error of their ways.
14) Pick must be in thread before kickoff of your game.

Here is a link to the Week 1 Schedule College Football Schedule - 2025 Season - ESPN

Tricky bit in week one as 8 teams play twice in “Week 1” (Rule 12). If you pick one of those, you must designate which game.

Post your Week 1 picks in this thread.

Overcooked Brass (Annealing question)

Did you see any change in color of the flame after a few seconds?
No. I was looking for an orange flame but didnt see it. I adjusted my setup for a very slight glow in the neck for 1 second then it drops out.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I will turn up the flame next time so the cycle time is quicker.
