If you buy beef by the percentage of how much cow it encompasses, I have some questions...

Bought half a cow from a shop not far from me, was just over $2200. The butcher shop has a relationship with the rancher, so the price isn't crazy. Spend some time talking with the butcher and they will help you as much as they can. I have a family of 4 and my son is about to hit puberty and he can eat about as much as I can. So we do the steaks from 1"- 1.5" thick, and they are great steaks. A lot of burger will come your way, stew meat, and roasts. Supplement the beef with fish and venison and you are good to go.

A big freezer is a must, or two of them. My butcher freezes them solid and I get them frozen. Makes transport easier and the meat stays fresh until we need it. Typically a half will last us a year if we go easy on it.

Typically the meat will be better than your local stores, and it will be cheaper in the long run as well.

Follow my 7 dumbo project aka 7 dasher!!

I was quietly thinking the same thing.

We were running 7BR out of some XP-100s in the 80's to shoot the Long Range portion of the the MASTERS national competition. It was stupid easy to get 1MOA accuracy out of with Nosler BTs and had plenty of energy to down steel with even at long distance with shitty hits.
I Been thinking about it and my only hesitation is that its a little short, I would love it if somebody would confirm this but it appears like peterson 7 br case is 1.520. Lapua 6 br is 1.555. I really want to get as much neck as possible for this long bullet, my reamer is 1.555.
Maybe they would both be similar after being fireformed to 7 dumbo.

M40 front sling swivel question

1) Yes 3 pieces

Please keep this in mind, this came out of a stock for a Remington 725 so I cannot verify 100% this is what was used on the M40. Hoping one of the forum experts may chime in with a yes or no. From a few pictures I have seen here, I believe this is what was used.

It is not a three piece set up. It's just a tapered nut with a reeded edge. The tapered nut is put into the barrel channel, and the front sling swivel screws into the nut from the underside of the stock.

Wichita actually made a run of reproduction M40 front sling swivel nuts to go with their M40A1 front sling swivels (since guys have been incorrectly using these A1 swivels on their M40 builds). The Wichita set is on the left, and the original USMC M40 takeoff set is on the right.

I'm working on restoring a Navy M700/M40 using and original stock and have been fortunate to have Ryan N. pointing me in the right direction. Too bad he stepped away from the forum. He would have dropped a ton of info and pics in here.

If they leave it totally up to you, that makes it a little more difficult, and requires some education. Look at various ads for commercial 1/2 a d 1/4 beef packages to see what they sell inthe package. It’s usually a list: x round, x porterhouse, x grind, x soup bones, etc.
Or ask the provider what is the usual package.
Bonus: people who do this (sell beef off their ranch) sometimes include a certain amount of pork, as a bonus, and sometimes ever Chicken. Depends on the region and ranch/farm.
When I shoot a hog, I just ask for all of it as grind, so I can make my own sausage, Or like some canneries, a pound for pound trade of whatever types of sausages they have already made up.
In the case of Elk, I usually take the loins and backstraps, and then order out what I want, and x amount of burger. Get about 35% to 50% back, minus bones and scrap. If we butcher the elk ourselves (usually), we keep more scrap to feed the animals (dawgs), give the liver to the parents of our black hunting partner (grandfather LOVES it).
Good luck.

MRAD vs Custom Build

I like my AI barrel change feature for finding and settling on a caliber. Not to actively swap between calibers.

For $1000 (for my AIAT, at least) I can get different high quality prefits/blanks and try out 308, 6br, or 22-250. I settled in the latter; it’s awesome for pdogs (I don’t reload). I save space in the safe and don’t have to futz with all of the other parts of 3 individual guns because stuff just snaps together and works. My scope stays level vs setting it up on each gun, etc etc.

However, I don’t think I’d like the system in order to constantly swap calibers every weekend. For me the AI system was an aid for caliber exploration versus an end unto itself.
I think most guys tend to do something along those lines. I tend to only swap barrels occasionally and only if I plan to leave it on for a substantial amount of time - something like prepping for a match but using a cheaper cartridge so I can focus on shooting fundamentals and setting up behind the rifle. Typically I’m more of an issue than the ballistics.

6mm vs 6.5mm, not quite beating a dead horse.

Honestly the Splash here in the southwest isn’t hard to read but you can definitely can read the plate better impact wise with the 25/260. At bigger plates at farther distances sometimes impact verification can be a little harder. My experience with the 6 creed is not chasing the lands. I run it until velocity drops off or accuracy drops off and a deep clean can’t get it back.

If you buy beef by the percentage of how much cow it encompasses, I have some questions...

Usually a half or quarter means you get half or a quarter of all the cuts. And you will end up with a lot of burger.

A good butcher will take order and cut/wrap how you want. Thickness and # of steaks per pack. Best way I've had it done was cellophane between steaks, then wrapped in cellophane and butcher paper. Lasted well over a year, approaching 2 years on some packs that got lost in the bottom of the freezer.

Sometimes I make 10-15%, online sales I even lose money sometimes. And they still want a discount.

I had one asshole in my store demanding a 10% discount because he was in the army 50 years ago. I literally showed him my cost on the computer screen and explained my sticker price I was making about 40 dollars profit on a 500 dollar gun. The dipshit insisted I chip in and pay for some of his gun....I threw him out.

Ukraine war Bullshit.

Use AI to gameolay few scenarios were basically done for, there is no way to fix this best case is orwellian new duo/tri polar world with serious population reduction AND much lower quality of life. All other scenarios are either impossible to implement (no political will and population unwilling to accept reality of less pain now for longer time vs kick the can) or are incompatible with human life (like increased radiation and local “hotspots with extreme sunburn”).
So pour yourself a glass while you can and tell fuck off to those who need to hear it.

Black wavy marks on brass

You still have carbon left in necks after wet tumbling.....

View attachment 8742079
Wet tumbling without media does leave some of that carbon in the neck. But usually not enough is left for decent lubrication. Whenever I wet tumble, which is on rare occasions, that's how I do it when I've got a bunch of brass that's got a bunch of dirt, mud and grim inside, then I'll wet tumble to be sure the interior is cleaned out. But wet tumbling adds more time to processing, having to go through the effort for rinsing and drying them out. While with dry tumbling, there is that time getting the media out of the case, but that time is way less than that for wet tumbling.

;)

Nothing wrong with taking the extra time that wet tumbling requires and the time for lubing the necks also. It's all really just a matter of preference anyway. But it's nice to know what's involved with any of the choices to make an informed decision. :giggle:

6mm vs 6.5mm, not quite beating a dead horse.

I don’t have a 6.5 creed but have several 25 creeds 6 creeds and 6 dashers. I also have a 20’ 260AI. The 260 has been very impressive to me. I run 140 hybrids at 2830 and the 156’s at 2720 with RL 16, pretty darn impressive to me out of a 20’ barrel. Recoil out of my 25 creed (both 12 pound NRL light rigs) is almost indistinguishable to me 140 2830 vs 135 (2860) and my real world wind holds are generally the same obviously slightly more drop with the 260. My favorite creed is still the 6. Super easy to tune significantly less recoil that the 25 or 260 and the ballistics with the 109 hybrid at 3030 line up very closely to my 25. The 6 creed has been simple to tune where the 25’s have been much finickier. The easiest of all with the least amount of recoil and best barrel life is the dasher just simple 105/109 hybrids, varget and cci450’s 31-32.2 grains will have you shooting tiny little groups. I doubt there’s a wrong answer and these are just my observations/opinions. Honestly pick one and if you really get into it you most likely will want to try something different in a barrel or two… that’s part of the fun

Black wavy marks on brass

Yea I only spend about 30k a year traveling to shoot matches where precision is paramount to throw it all away by wet tumbling......use your brain.

There is zero difference in sd/es between methods... Unless you count stuck media and other shit in your cases effecting internal ballistics.

Pure ignorance.

Wow, I'm so impressed.

SOLD Terry Cross KMW competition rifle w/Surgeon Tactical action

Free Bump for a cool AF rifle. For those that don't know, those early B & C prefix Surgeons were nasty. A time when Wade & Dave worked there. I believe this early B would've been considered a "581 action" I had one once and sold it to fnd another project. One of my regretted sales in my life
Agreed, I had 2 GAP built B prefix Surgeon action based rifles many years ago. I haven’t owned a better action, some as good but none really better.
