Maximum range of standard velocity 22LR

Around WWII, US army conducted time consuming and exhausting tests on several brands of 22 LR ammo with MV=1050-1100 ft/s. In conditions close to standard atmosphere, at sea level, the maximum range obtained for 40 grainers was approximately 1400 yards with bore elevation 25-30°. This was a looong time ago. Have they repeated the tests in modern times of radars aviability with 22 LR ammo manufactured not so long ago?

Old Pulled .30 Cal. Military Tip Experience in .308 Win???

Getting ready to resume testing some loads for my DPMS G2-LR SASS .308 with a 16” barrel.

My main goal will be trying some of the “newer” powders (ie Varget, RL-15, etc.) behind 168, 180, and 190gr. SMK’s…..yep, though I’ve been reloading for 50+ years, I don’t have much experience with many of the powders I now see on the shelves!

Anyway, while reviewing my SMK inventory, I rediscovered a BUNCH of pulled pre-WW2 30-06 tips. As shown in the attached pic, there are two types of FMJBT’s; one with a cannelure (173 gr) and one without (175 gr), along with an AP tip of 162 gr. These are shown with a 168 SMK.

The old FMJBT’s both have a shallower BT taper as compared to the SMK, and the cannelure locations may not suit the OAL requirements of the .308 Win.

If memory serves me correctly, we used these FMJBT tips in place of SMK’s simply because of economics, and they shot well enough in our 308’s and 30-06’s during Over-the-Course military style matches. Similarly, the AP tips always seemed to perform adequately also. All the tips were pulled from DCM issued or purchased corrosive ammo.

All that said, has anyone done any load experimentation with these tips for the .308 Win.? Also found a bunch of 7.62x51 147gr. pulled tips, so I’d love to hear about anyone’s experience with these as well.

Lastly, I want any load used to perform well as fed from the magazine, not loaded individually, so any insights in this area would be appreciated also!

Thanks in advance! Mike

Observation and Sighting Devices Forum: Village Idiot Nominations

Not sure if this belongs here or in the Bear Pit. My apologies if I am stepping over the line.

I am not on here as much as I used to be, but lately it seems like every thread has some more spirited than usual mudslinging. It seems to be centered around a few posters, but it is also entirely possible that I am misreading it.

Please post your nominations for this forum's village idiot(s).

I am really curious to see if the names most frequently mentioned will be the same ones I am thinking of.

Sidearms & Scatterguns Jack of all trades, master of none - Which Shotgun?

Priorities are:
1: Hunting
2: Bug Out - Self/Home Defense
3: 3 Gun (I’m not a gamer - more for fun/training as opposed to being actually competitive)
4: Clays (more for fun/training as opposed to being actually competitive)

The biggest factors for me are quality, reliability, simplicity, and longevity. I have an AI for my bolt, an LMT-CQB for my AR, and a Glock 19 for my handgun - I’d like a shotgun of similar quality to round it out.

For the above purposed I’m trying to find a shotgun that is:
  • Reliable with light and heavy loads
  • Threaded for chokes
  • 12g
  • Ability to take a tube extension for 3-gun
  • Ability to install a pic rail and add an RMR for home defense
  • 24” barrel (?)
  • Company w/ High quality, QC, and CS
I’m looking at the following:

A
Benelli Supernova:
Pros: Reliable (pump), easy maintenance/cleaning, simple
Cons: Pumps are not ideal for 3 gun, NOT drilled and tapped for pic rail, not many aftermarket parts

B
Benelli M2:
Pros: Popular for 3 gun, lots of aftermarket, less cleaning than gas gun
Cons: I’ve heard it shoots slugs poorly (POA does not match POI), Not as reliable with light loads?

C
Beretta 1301 Comp:
Pros: Shoots light and heavy loads, already drilled and tapped for pic rail (I think?), decent aftermarket, little recoil, they came out with a part to fix the shells from going everyone if you hit the release button wrong
Cons: Sounds like it requires the most maintenance/cleaning/replacement of parts

From this post (https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/one-shotgun-to-rule-them-all.6961501/)it sounds like the above are pretty good options. Any additional thoughts?

Below are some I’ve, more or less, written off, but feel free to convince me otherwise:

Remington 870: would have been one of my top choices due to the platform, but am concerned about quality, QC, and customer service if I have an issue (especially since they went bankrupt and were sold off)

Benelli M4: No chokes, won’t shoot light loads reliably

Franchi Affinity: Might as well get M2?

Stoger M3000: Might as well get M2?

Mossberg 500: Not enough capacity for 3-gun & Can’t take mag tube extension, questionable QC

Mossberg 590: Can’t replace chokes or barrels for hunting

IWI TS-12: Unproven, won’t shoot light loads reliably, barrel length might be an issue for hunting, requires RDS

Cartridge length question

Hey all, I have what is, I’m sure, a really dumb beginner question. I’ve just started reloading, am reading and watching all that I can, but am otherwise on my own. No father to look at me when I ask this question and say, “are you fuckin’ kidding me?”

When measuring cartridge length, how accurate should you be? The manual I’m reading now (Speer Reloading Manual 12), it lists the cartridge length for 308 as 2.0150”. The first 5 I measured are 2.0195”, 2.0240”, 2.0140”, 2.0175”, and 2.0195”. Is this an acceptable variation, or do I need to try to size them all on the button?

Thanks in advance, and feel free to make fun of the dumb new guy!

SOLD 34MM Rings or Mount

Looking for high quality rings or mount for a NF ATACR 5-25X56.

This is for my first bolt build so I am not really sure what exactly to look for/ask for. My understanding is, I should get 20MOA rings/mount and leave the factory rail on my T3x CTR -or- replace the factory rail with a 20MOA and look for 0MOA rings/mount. As for height, no idea since I can't try before I buy. Any advice or suggestions are welcome as well!

Looking for Spuhr or Area 419 mostly, just no QD mounts.

Cheers

Firearms LMT 14.5 complete rifle

I have an LMT 14.5 complete rifle. Factory Mars L lower, LMT 13.25 MLOK upper, LMT BCG, Radian Charging handle and LMT 14.5 DI barrel with pinned/welded surefire flash hider done by retro arms (best in the game, cant even tell its pinned.) This rifle has only seen about 200 flawless rounds but I like my specwar more so decided to get rid of this one. $1950 for the complete rifle.
