Recently picked up a used ARC Xylo chassis, and so far I'm liking it a lot. Got the 'large' grip for it, and like it even more

Decided to get some wood m-lok slot covers in walnut to match the grip... and got to thinking that a wood cheek piece really finish out the 'look' that I have pictured in my mind. I spoke with the guy @ ARC on the phone briefly and they said they knew people had done it, but didn't have any solid/specific leads on who to contact.

I dabble a little with woodworking myself, but I'm more the hand-tool (saw / plane / chisel / rasp / file) kind of woodworker... while I probably *could* make something that would fit and work, I'm not sure the final product would match the other parts and 'look' right, if ya know what I mean

Anyone here either have or made a wood cheek piece for their Xylo (or other chassis) and able to give some leads, or even just tips?

A while back, I got a chance to test out a set of Vortex Fury AB binos and was pretty impressed. So when I saw that they had a new CRF in the Razor lineup that included full environmentals, a new ballistics engine, their wind capture system, and some form of a connection to a Kestrel, I was intrigued. They had done some interesting things with the Fury AB, so I wanted to see what the HD 4000 GB had on offer. Of particular interest to me was their new Geoballistics solver. I also wanted to see how the wind capture inclusion carried over as well as how the new CRF interacts with a Kestrel. The Fury AB has the full AB solver onboard and connects with a Kestrel for a full integration, but clearly, Vortex has not leveraged that relationship with the new Razor, so I was interested to see what they came up with.

Feature summary

In quick summary, the new Razor is a CRF that includes full weather environmentals to include temperature and pressure. It integrates Vortex's wind setting/capture system that they had on the Fury AB, making manual entry of wind data very quick and efficient. It also includes an onboard compass and inclinometer so that it can feed all of this information to their new ballistic engine, Geoballistics. It is Bluetooth enabled so that configuration can be done via their app, and it provides some connectivity with a Kestrel, should you want to utilize one. Overall, it's a pretty full featured CRF, but with some deviations from the feature set of the Fury AB.

What's in the box




When you first open the box, you will find the Razor inside a fairly solid protective case. It has mounting points on the back side so you can attach it to your belt etc., but honestly, I felt like the case was too big and bulky. It certainly is solid and felt secure, but it's not anything I would ever use except in general transit. Other than that, it does include a pretty nice quality lanyard and also includes a battery, so you are pretty much set to go as soon as you open the box.

Physical

First impressions on the RF, it's a little thicker than most CRF's I have used. While I am not certain as to why this was necessary, most likely it was due to the need for space for the additional wind capture buttons that they brought over from the Fury, as well as to make room for the integral tripod mount. Both of these features are appreciated, especially the wind capture capability that I'll cover shortly. It also has a built-in clip that allows you to put it in your pocket and clip it in place like a pocket knife. I would not personally ever use that, but it's reversible for left or right side mounting, and I suppose you can probably remove it if you'd like to slim it up just a bit.







Of course, it has all the expected things as well, including a range button, menu button, lanyard mounting point, adjustable eye cup, diopter adjustment and battery cover. Speaking of which, I appreciate that Vortex uses a flip up tab on the battery cover, making field battery changes easy. Overall, while a bit bulky, it feels very solid and, while it was a bit tighter than usual, I was still able to fit it into any of the rangefinder pouches I have laying around.

Optics

The optics on the Razor are quite good. Don't get me wrong, we are not talking Leica level glass here, but the Razor is very clear. Color cast was neutral, lacking that 'blue' cast that you sometimes see. And it was sufficiently bright that I never felt like I was impeded from ranging through shooting light.

The display is pretty much what you would expect, giving you your distance, ballistics data etc. via a red display. The internal diameter of the reticle is 3mrad, and the measurement across the vertical and horizontal posts of the reticle is 6mrad.

Overall, no surprises here, it was solid and worked fine for me. I did not find it overly cluttered but felt like I had good access to the data I needed to make a shot.

Have a carbon removal question. I have an APC9SD and I let the carbon on the barrel aka the bleed off ports get a little out of control. Wanting to get it cleaned up and wanted to ask for thoughts on the process I have chosen. I have a tool that is pretty much a battery terminal tool set into a long extension (like a MP5SD cleaning tool) so you can just twist it to scour the carbon off and my plan is this...
Soak the area with Boretech C4 let is sit. Re-wet the area and scrub it with the tool. Follow up by flushing the area with C4 to flush away debris and loose carbon. Repeat the process until I am happy with the result. I will follow this with a general cleaning and then stay on top of the barrel cleaning process going forward so I don't have to deal with it again. Do y'all see any issues with my process? Should I use a stronger solvent? Berryman's B-12 Chem-Tool was suggested but that might be a bit much and might melt the 3d printed tool! Look forward to reading your thoughts and opinions. So I have a question, I see alot of people running red dots on the scope rings of LPVOs, 45 deg offsets in conjunction with LPVOs, etc. In my dealings with most, they are either running an LPVO, red dot or Holographic sighting system. But I've seen this trend where some are running two of them at the same time, such as mounting an RMR or equivalent on the scope rings or offset. I get the need for backup sighting such as offset, flip up or fixed irons. But I need some help understanding why people are running red dots with LPVOs. I thought the allure to LPVOs was that you could get a 1x optic with an illuminated center dot that acts as a red dot.

Can someone elaborate on what I'm missing? Or is this an expensive way to get a heads up/high/1.93"/ etc. on top of their primary optic? Then why not just run the LPVO in a higher mount?

The other day I was out picking up some more Varget and decided to also buy some ar comp just to play with. I never see this powder being mentioned but was bored so I figured why not, I’ll play with a pound. Looking at Alliant’s site it listed 41.4 as a node for 175smk, so I loaded up a OCW test starting at 40gn’s and ended at 42. This is being shot out of a 16” gas gun.

On shooting and watching the speeds on my magnetospeed I stopped shooting at 41.8 gn’s due to the speed was way up at 2564 fps (3 shot groups). I figured that was moving out of this gun. Now on looking at the brass it all looked great. Zero signs of pressure but still... Also the gun felt like I was shooting a light load similar to fgmm. Hell I dunno..

So on looking at my groups and speeds I had some great stuff. 40.5, 40.7 and 40.9 all looked identical and were .5 moa with single digit es /sd and were around 2512 mv. Compared to my varget load thats around 2.5 grains less of powder and I picked up a tad bit of speed. Brass looked great and the gun was smooth firing.

Anyways, anyone use this powder and what are some opinions? I love my Varget but to me it this stuff felt like I was shooting a lighter load. Oh btw the Alliant site’s listed recipe at 41.4 gave me a .7 moa 3 shot group with single digit es / sd and 2552 mv. Brass looked fine on that too but that’s speeding out of a 16” gas gun.
