Thoughts after vacation

Spent the last few weeks driving around the country trying to see nature. A few highlights:

  • I really fucking hate motorcycles. I'm 10 miles out in the wilderness and can still hear those faggots.
  • Why is every other lot in WY a junkyard. Like seriously wtf.
  • We are doomed as a species. Its only a matter of time. Guy tried to start a fight with me because he was in line for a stupid boat and I was hiking past. "This is the line for the boat" "I'm not taking the boat"
  • Fuck Canada. (Went looking for advice on Banff and it was some lib cuck bitching about America. F that noise. I'll go visit the Badlands instead. (Plus my favorite park has been overrun)
  • Fuck National Parks. So damn overcrowded. You can't even park after 9AM. So just get up early! yeah you get about 3 hours of park use per day that way before the shit gets zerged.
  • Control your crotch monkeys. Yeah my 50 YO ass is slow going up the trail. I can also yeet your little shit off the cliff if he keeps mouthing off. I try and be polite and let people pass. Even my patience has limits.
  • After listening to hours of true crime podcasts on the drive:
    • Media has always been ass
    • Medical laws exist for a reason (The number of quacks who turn out to be serious killers is amazing)
      • Still wouldn't trust a "real" doctor as far as I can throw them.
  • Can you idiots pick up your trash for once in your life?
  • I'm booking an elk hunt cause those fuckeres hid for 2 weeks. Pronghorn/Bison? We cool. Moose, you're next. Bears: I'd hide my ass in the woods too. Stay fluffy boss.
  • Buy more ammo
  • I am an old cranky bitch.
Carry on.

B14r feeding issues

I did a search but couldn't find a good answer. I have a carbon fiber barrel B14r in a Mcmillan HTG with a Hawkins Precision M5 bottom metal and have the common feeding issue with the mag catch being too short to lock the mag in tight. Is there a simple solution that doesn't involve any modification to the mag? I have another B14r in an MDT chassis that works flawless, and I'd rather not have a set of mags for each rifle. I see that Hawkins has a bedding block but I'm not familiar with it and I really don't want to go through the expense of having it milled in if it's not going to fix the problem.

Geissele national match won’t reset with match spring ?

Putting a new Geissele national match trigger in a rd15 lower. Trigger won’t reset with match (lowest weight) spring in. Works fine with next higher weight(dmr) spring. ?

Ideas?

Seems like trigger is free in lower doesn’t seem to be binding

Have same trigger in another gun with 2 lb first stage and 10 oz second. DMR spring doesn’t compare

Suppressors SiCo Scythe review

This seemed like an interesting suppressor for the hunting and general purpose folks, so I thought id try one out for the good of the forum. This is not an exhaustive review, just some show and tell. I have no affiliation with SiCo, but I am a SOT and purchased this from Allen Arms at the dealer price.

I like light/short cans for hunting, and own a pair of Ultra 5’s for the purpose. Always been happy with them, and they do really well on medium length barrels(20”-22”). The Scythe should be a fair bit quieter, for only a small weight and length penalty.

The Scythe is a 100% titanium can which is 6.16” long, 1.76” in diameter, and weighs 7.3 oz (more on that). Its 300 Rum rated with no barrel restrictions. Thats pretty stout, and after a quick perusal of the web, there are other rum rated small ti cans, but none without barrel restrictions. It comes with a direct thread mount and a single baffle brake. It also includes the bravo tool, a spanner tool, and something they're calling the radial tool.

The Scythe looks very well made. All of the machined surfaces are perfectly finished, including the threads. The laser welds are perfect. There is a slight color variation across the can surface (see below). The advertised weight of 7.3 oz doesn’t include the DT mount. On my scale, the complete can weighed 8.3 oz, with the DT mount weighing 1 oz by itself. Definitely on the light end for Ti cans, but 7.3 oz with the mount would have been awesome. My firing tests used a Ti Area 419 suppressor adapter on their standard steel universal-adapter, which weighs 8.5 oz total.

I cut a muzzle thread in the lathe and took the opportunity to check the straightness with the included DT mount. Measuring from just inside the end cap bore(not the brake baffle), total indicated runout was just under .0035”. This is very good, and basically what you’ll find from Thunder Beast cans.

I didn't go crazy with the the firing portion. I used a U7 Gen 2 30 as the baseline since its zeroed on my 6cm. Two three shot groups with each can on steel at 525 yards, dialed for elevation with no adjustment or holding for wind. Cans were swapped between each group. It was a calm day but the first two groups were affected by some left to right breeze. Very small test, but there doesn't appear to be any meaningful degradation of accuracy or shift as compared to the U7. If you're wondering, both cans shot one .5 moa group and one .3 moa group.

There’s a downloadable manual on the website which makes mention of a radial tool. It doesnt show a picture, or talk about its use, but it must be this thing. This would allow for tightening the can onto your mount of choice. I like the idea of a soft vice insert for the purpose, but this works too and doesn't require a vice.

IMG_0298.jpeg

Regarding sound, I cant tell the difference between the Scythe and the U7. There’s just nothing between them to my ear. I didn't shoot it next to the U5 gen 2, but no doubt the Scythe is quieter. I wasn't able to shoot it on a 30 cal magnum, but I seriously doubt its the quietest 300 wm can SiCo has tested. Seems like a weird claim that could only be possible if they've never tested any medium to large cans that are known to work well on magnums. The Scythe would be a good choice on a 30 cal or other magnum hunting gun though, that I have no doubt.

I hated the anchor brake that the omega 300 came with, and I removed them and replaced with the Hansohn bros flat and caps. The Scythe brake doesn’t seem to add noise, but as best I could tell, didn’t reduce recoil with a Creedmoor sized case either. Speaking of the Hansohn flat end caps, the Scythe accepts the Omega version. The Omega 300 gets quieter with these caps, but the Scythe didn’t seem to be affected.

Hansohn end cap with no mount.

SiCo’s first attempt into the Ti can segment seems to be a good one. While I was playing with this one I kept thinking how expensive it was at $1174 MSRP. The configuration I was shooting it in using Area 419 Ti adapter adds about $180. I kept thinking the Diligent Enticer S, or Otter Creek Hydrogen S or K would be the better buys, with almost no tradeoffs. I just checked this morning though, and it appears that the MAP pricing for the Scythe is $996, so that makes it a little more reasonable. Still puts Otter Creek and Diligent one to two hundred bucks cheaper.

I bought this one through Allen Arms (dealer only distributor), and they had a bunch in stock. They're a big outfit so your dealer may have access to them. I’ve no affiliation with Allen Arms other than they’re my go-to for purchases. Captiol Armory has them in stock for MAP price at the moment. Silencershop shows them for the MAP price, but none in stock.

Im sure I missed something so fire away with any questions.

1st group after bore sight/zeroing scope

Despite getting my first long range rifle in December 2024, it took me this long to take it to the range.

This was my first time bore sighting a rifle & zeroing a scope. Honestly, I am ashamed that it took me almost two hours and maybe 30 rounds to get this done and the final group at 100 yards looked like this:
IMG_7168.jpeg

I used Hornady American Gunner BTHP 6.5 CM 140 grain ammo. I’ve seen some amazing groups on the Hide and hoping to get some feedback and helpful advice on how to improve.

Thanks in advance!

Optics Leupold mk5hd 5-25 - Tier one mount - Price Drop

Leupold mk5hd 5-25 with the tremor 3 reticle mounted in a Tier One mount. Scope has seen a handful of matches. It has some marks on the windage cap. Other than that its in good shape. Comes with sunshade, box for scope, plastic case that came with the mount, and an extra front ring. Not looking to split up. I would consider trades towards a black Vortex G3 6-36.

New CZ 457 24" 1.180 Match Barrel from L3i

This popped up a few days ago and I realized it hasn't been shared here. L3i just came out with what might be the best deal on a aftermarket barrel for the CZ 457 (At least for NRL and PRS shooters). It is a 24 inch straight 1.180 profile barrel with a match chamber and target crown. They haven't officially said where the blank comes from, but based on the diameter there are only a few options- All of them being top tier barrel manufacturers.

The 1.180 barrel diameter is a huge deal for those looking for optimal balance on their CZ 457. Based on my calculations, the barrel should weigh around 7 lbs giving you an extra 3 lbs up front over a 20.5 inch MTR barrel. This means that almost any chassis or stock you fit this to will require little to no extra weight up front for balance.

1719353165711.png

They originally priced these at ~$550, but was told by @Thesepaperwings they were able to secure a better deal due to ordering the blanks in a larger batch with the barrels for their new Stinger Action. So the price right now is $329.00 + tax and $6 for shipping. I personally think the value is huge and already placed an order. They didn't say how long this pricing will be available, but it's definitely a good deal.

Obviously no testing data yet, but based on the quality of everything else I've seen/gotten from L3i, I'm confident it'll be great. I'll post results from ammo testing, balance, etc once it comes in.

<taps mic>... Umm, hello... this is LuckyDuck & I'm trying to reach you about your extended T-Rex warranty...

Well fellas, I finally succumbed to the allure of the silver screen. For all those with Model 29's because of the Dirty Harry movies, all the members here that own Beretta 92's because of the Lethal Weapon or Die Hard movies, etc etc... I too have joined your ranks of purchasing a firearm for no reason other than I saw it in a movie and just thought it was cool as could be...

Without further ado- I present the Marlin 1895 SBL in 45-70!

Image

I'm justifying this as my "much needed"... "bear gun" but really I saw it in a Jurassic Park movie some years back and Marlin's marketing just knew how to hook me... here's what I'm talking about/explain the post title...

Image

All that said- I've been smitten with this particular rifle for some years. Of course Remington owned Marlin for the majority of the times that I would seldom run into this model in one of my LGS and it was always... something. The pic rail wasn't aligned straight, the stock was poorly fit with huge gaps between it & the receiver, one particular model I remember the front sight post being mounted severely canted... ugh it seemed every chance I had to purchase this particular model there was something noticeably unacceptable (and not some sort of cosmetic nitpick).

Well you know the story- Remington (or at least their holding company went bankrupt)... Marlin was one of the brands that was liquidated and Ruger purchased them. And this particular model all but disappeared from the market for a spell... but was also one of the first Ruger Marlins to be brought back...

And there was some incredible scrutiny & anticipation on what Ruger would do with the Marlin brand and no shortage of critics to nitpick the bejesus out of the 1895 SBL. Well... in my opinion at least Ruger knocked it out of the park with their improvements, increase in quality/consistency etc... but the one huge 'problem' often raised was the MSRP seemed to just about double when it was brought back.

Now this likely is twice the rifle as compared to the Remington owned Marlins that I was able to see but.... yeah it's not a $1,600+ rifle either which is what they were going for (when you could find them).

Well I caught an email from a somewhat familiar online retailer that they not only had this model in stock but they were liquidating it at prices not seen since before the whole Remington/Ruger handoff...thing I'll call it. So... I bought it.

I'm just getting her cleaned up tonight but from what I can see thus far- the build is exactly as one would expect it to be. I'm avoiding calling it 'perfect' but dang if the Remington models I kept running into just didn't have some rather severe quality issues.

Like I said- my own fantasies aside- I really have no practical need for this rifle but I just think it's cool as hell and am super stoked that I finally got one for myself and at what I believe to be a reasonable price. Granted- I'm probably going to buy another couple hundred dollars in fine leather goods to "dress it up" a little bit to a proper leather gun but I really do need to start looking for reasonably priced 45-70 ammo since this is a new caliber I've added to the stable.

Anywho, thought I'd share.
