A tale of three Larue's (Large frame review Part 1 - OBR)

Over the past 12 years I've been addressing the shortcomings of Larue Rifles by Rebarreling and enhancing them to a level that a 4K+ rifle should perform, mostly out of necessity for myself and other shooter's who want more out of their Precision Gassers and were tired of waiting on the promise of optional Calibers like the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6mm Creedmoor.

In this review I will be discussing the modifications and enhancements I've made to my personal Larue rifles that has truly transformed them to exceptional .3 MOA rifles with 100% reliability.

As many of us know Larue Large Frame Gassers have always been in a category considered as heavily proprietary, and seem to perform best when using Larue and Larue only part's.

Due to the nature of LaRue LF rifles being designed specifically to work best with LaRue products sometimes it can be extremely frustrating for Shooters who have already spent thousands of dollars acquiring non LT suppressors that don't seem to play well (depending on Flow design) with thier current rifles and in some cases require troubleshooting and tuning of the Buffering Mass and Spring Rates and even then it can still be finicky, especially when running multiple hand loads that may be at a lower pressure compared to factory ammo ultimately causing a variety of malfunctions.

The majority of malfunctions can be contributed to LaRue's Port Select Gas system. The (PST) can be extremely effective but offers a very narrow window of operation that can negatively affect reliability when introducing any changes that may push it out of its designed operational tolerances, it's just not a one size fit all design.

Unfortunately not many people understand how the (PST) Gas Block works. Removing the Larue PST AGB isn't difficult if you know what you're doing, there's tons of incorrect information that the ignorant regurgitate and pass on especially with the ARF.COM know- it -all's.

Most think the Larue PST AGB turns off/switches between two different sized gas ports, the smaller most forward Gas Port for Surpressed and the rear largest Port for unsuppressed. While that theory would make sense that's not how it works.
20240218_154040.jpg

20240218_153256.jpg

As mentioned above the Larue (PST) AGB and Barrels utilize two different sized ports that control the flow of gas. Keep in mind the actual Gas Block portion itself is only about 1" and the remaining is to house the parts for the port selector.

As shown below the Port Select lever actually only controls the smaller port, it doesn't even come close to the Larger port that ALWAYS remains open.
20240218_153211.jpg

The Large port actually does double duty, when the (PST) is set in the Surpressed mode the single small port in the switch shown above in the Surpressed setting is rotated blocking off gas to the smallest gas port.

Once you throw the gas selector switch over to Unsurpassed the selector with the small port rotates over and aligns with the small Gas Block port allowing that extra gas needed to come up and to be fed/transferred back to the larger rear port feeding all the gas into one port and increasing the gas flow.

20240218_153821.jpg

As you can see from the picture above when you shine a light in the port selector bore that runs directly underneath the gas tube and it runs the entire length of both ports.

Hopefully this clears up some of the details of the (PST) and its limitations.

The OBR

There's no denying when Mark LaRue came up with the design of the OBR he truly invented something quite special, with its 100% True Free Floating barrel design and 20 MOA monolithic one peice top rail, all incorporated into probably what is the most robust heavy duty receiver and handguard design that is damn near indestructible.

Over the years I've Rebarreled more Large and Small Frame OBR's than I can count. There are some slight differences between the two, they both directly attach the handguard to the uppper by four Torx screws but the Large frame uses a direct attachment to the handguard / Mono 20 MOA top rail and the small frame utilizes a type of tongue and groove design that secures the handguard by pinching the 10 MOA monorail in place.
IMG_20220322_160818739~2.jpg

Throughout all the Larue's I've worked on I've come across a few that where in fact not free floating due to the barrel nut making contact inside the handguard, mostly OBR's. It pays to remove your handguard and look for obvious signs of the barrel nut making contact. To alleviate this issue I just removed material from inside the handguard around where the barrel nut sits.

With the OBR having a shorter Handguard I decided to have Paul Ross turn me a Custom 18" 6.5CM Bartlein.

Starting from the Muzzle Brake to the Stock here is the build list breakdown as it currently sits.

Area 419 Hellfire Match 6.5 Muzzle Brake.

Custom 18" 6.5CM / 4 Groove Bartlein/ M110 Contour / Oversized Barrel extension for mandatory thermofit / 1-8 Twist / .875 Gas Block Journal/ 5/8x24 Threads and Rifle Length Gas System headspaced to the Updated Larue HP Small Firing Pin bolt, and have since upgraded to all Larue HP bolts.

Seekins Precision switch lever .875 Adjustable Gas Block. (Will be replacing with a Rifle Speed AGB). Again having the capability to fine tune the gas system over the Larue PST has been a fantastic upgrade that has solved any and all functioning issues no matter what ammo or suppressors are used on the rifle.

Battle Arms Development 60/90 Ambi Safety.

Ergo Grip

Raidian Raptor Ambi Charging Handle.

Due to the Short 18" 6.5CM with RLG I'm running a H3 JP SCS with the stiffest Red/Yellow Spring inside a Dark Hour 11 position Carbine Buffer tube that allows for ultra fine Length of Pull Adjustments when running a stock like the B5 Precision, I have since moved back to the Magpul PRS Lite Adjustable Stock.

The original barrel was a LW-50 Pre XTRAXN and shot decent with a consistent .75 MOA average. As I'm sure everyone here has heard tales from LaRue Fanboys how thier OBR is a Sub Half MOA all day gun, but in reality the people who boast about their accuracy try to substantiate these claims by posting a few cherry picked groups. I don't think I've ever seen anyone shoot a 6x5 to show thier true MOA average.

The Upgrades on this have truly transformed the rifle in to what a 4K + Gasser should be with a honest Sub Half MOA average.

While performing load development the OBR still averaged Sub 1/2" MOA.

I ended up selecting 140 ELD /40.4gr H4350 / Lapua SRP Brass / CCI BR4 Primers. Most of my 6.5CM Bartlein Barrels that Paul Ross turned all shoot this load very well.

2025 SHOT Show Optics

I'm sure I'm not catching everything here, but these are the items that have been released or announced this month with my thoughts and comments based on what I've heard so far.

  • Schmidt & Bender FFP version of Meta 3-18x42 with FML-TR1 type reticle - this could prove to be a really nice option with PM II turrets and alternative to some of the smaller MPVO's, at 44.5' FOV at 3x for the SFP version if they keep the FFP close this might be an impressive alternative to the 2.5-20 scopes. At around 27oz this could shake some things up, but sounds like we need to wait until summer for this one.
  • ZCO 2-10x30 MPVO single turn turret with 12mrad up and 2mrad below zero. A very expensive MPVO but I also imagine along with the price tag comes the best optical performance we have seen yet for this range. Coupled with the new reticles that are the best FFP reticles I've seen to date for MPVO these could prove very promising!
  • Leupold new CMR-Mil reticle for 2-10x30. Okay, so it took Leupold 2 years to bring a usable MPVO reticle to market and I still think the reticle could use some improvements, apparently Leupold doesn't think anyone will be dialing this scope because wind holds are essentially non-existing on the main horizontal line, at least they could have given us dots if they didn't want to run the line through the horseshoe.
  • Primary Arms PLxC 2.5-20x48 - this could be pretty exciting. PA is known for punching above their class in terms of optical-mechanical performance and I expect this new 2.5-20 will impress, but the bigger question is the reticles, the Athena G2 and Neptune just seem way too busy which leaves the DEKA G2 which could be really nice especially if it works at 2.5x, but that's a big if.
  • Primary Arms PLxC 4.5-36x56 - while I am excited about the 2.5-20 not so much with this 4.5-36, similar to Kahles, why use 8x erector for competition oriented scope, with already strong competition from numerous outstanding 6-36x56 designs, I'm not sure what appeal of going down to 4.5x is? Maybe there is some hidden market I am not seeing?
  • Kahles K540i 5-40x56 Ultra Wide Angle eyepiece - after almost 20 years of their questionable patent, Swarovski finally takes advantage of the ultra wide angle eyepiece. However, why the 8x erector? The K328i wasn't the best option to start with, so more excitement over this one for sure. With this scope aimed at the competition community I just don't know many who've been asking for such a high erector, instead the community tends to prefer more forgiving designs. Did Kahles engineers figure out some kind of optical formula magic or will this scope struggle to be as forgiving as its counterparts at the price point? Would love to see this side by side with the ZCO 8-40x56, TT 7-35x56 and March Gen2 5-42x56... if I can source or fund some of these I may try to review these later this year.
  • Burris XTR PS 3.3-18x50mm and 5.5-30x56 - using their new HUD gives Revic a run for the money, looks like Burris may have even improved upon the knurling which was one of my biggest gripes in previous releases. The HUD looks very promising and the new clickless turret sounds interesting. Consider me impressed, I may look to review one at some point as I've always liked the idea of HUD where I don't have to break cheekweld for changes.
  • Leapers scopes from Taiwan. Price is pretty high. Not sure if the market is ready for Taiwanese scopes at this price point, but I imagine they are impressive for the price and may be worth looking into.
  • Meprolight scopes from Taiwan. Similar to above on Leapers, maybe same OEM?
  • Telson optics 5-32x56 Japanese mfr - starting to see more and more companies pop up with options, unless they are priced right not sure how many people will take a chance on them.
  • SAI 10 1-10x24 finally makes its debut, I've been talking about this one for a couple years now but have been told "no", well now it's reality and it's very short and very light, possibly the lightest 1-10 on the market. The SAI 6 is my favorite 1-6 LPVO so I have high hopes for this SAI 10 as long as ATI didn't cut too many corners to make it so short and so light.
  • Apex 1-10x24 LPVO assembled in USA - interesting that this Canadian company felt they needed to assemble in the USA, the decision was likely made before Trudeau decided to become a hermit and live out the rest of his exile in Saskatchewan.
  • US Optics X Line - yay, more scopes from China... (that was a joke by the way) come on USO, you used to be a dominant force in the high end scope world, let's get some new and innovative designs for your higher end series.
  • Meopta under new ownership (2023?), revamping product line, MeoForce DF is new tactical line, these could be really good.
  • Primary Arms HTX-1 enclosed RDS, completely made in USA even the glass! Lock deck height to co-witness with standard height irons. This could bring some serious competition to Trijicon and Aimpoint, but pricing the optic close to these major competitors who have already established a solid name for themselves along with military contracts may hinder sales a bit. But it is nice to see someone besides Vortex AMG going full MAGA!
  • Apex Vapor 1-4x22 Prismatic - clever design with built in multiplier, wonder if it would work with NODS?
  • Zerotech 1-4 prism (motorized zoom) what on earth?
  • EOTech compact SFP 3-9x with ACOG compatible mount but with strange MOA reticle - EOTech continues to show they don't understand the market, not sure this is a scope that a bunch of hunters have been asking for, I assume it's going to be pretty finicky but maybe my assumptions are wrong. I think EOTech could help this model with a mil/mil version and a reticle that works better for the gas gun crowd.
  • Hi-Lux has super short scopes in 3-12 and 4-16 - wonder if these are same OEM as GPO which also has super shorts in the same mag ranges... coincidence? Either way, I'm not sure yet where these super short designs fit in, I expect them to be pretty finicky and not have the greatest reticles for low mag use, but who knows, maybe we'll all be surprised.
Feel free to add your thoughts, comments or additions for any daytime optics I may have missed.

Review Rut-N-Ready Canned Up Rifle Cases Share

Here's a great piece of gear I want to share with the community! With AI and modern internet dodginess, small businesses can be hard to find; I don't see anything currently on the hide. Additionally messing up our AI guided searches, this comes from a hunting guide and mainly bow hunting company.

It's the best case I've found and used to date, and I've been using it for several years now and have several. It's simple, slick nylon inside and out (helps retrieval and transport packing), big zippers, folds flat, built in shoulder strap, and fair price. No BS gimmicks or tacticool nonsense. For and Range, suppressors, hunting, cars, trucks, XL bipods, NVG, Thermal, other BS attached, or airport hard case liner transport it's a go-to. “Drag bag” if you want, it’ll preform better than a BS tactical bag.

Upgrading from Tikka CTR - 3 options want opinions

Just a guy who likes to shoot - don't compete or anything. Looking to upgrade from the Tikka CTR 24" 6.5 CM that I've had for the last 7-8 years. But I'm a dad with a teacher wife so budget is important...so options are listed in increasing level of cost. Priorities with this new rifle is a 20" barrel for a suppressor and just setting round count back to 0 since I think mine is nearing being shot out (could still sell for a few bucks to a hunter or someone who isn't gonna put a ton of rounds down it). Still shoots 1/2 MOA with handloads as of right now, but it's a mile long with my can on it.

1 - buy a Tikka 20" CTR and stick my Manners stock on it (boring but affordable - would probably cerakote the new gun so would cost a few bucks)
2 - put a Bartlein on my Tikka (around $1300 with fluting, cerakote, gunsmithing, etc.)
3 - sell the Tikka for around $900 and buy a Horizon Firearms Vandal X or Prime (seem to be around $2300-$2400 street price, so nearly the same as option 2)

Which would you guys do?

End of an Era: Boy Scouts of America Officially Changes Name to Embrace Inclusivity After 114 Years!

The “woke virus” continues to spread in America.

The Boy Scouts of America has announced a major rebranding as it transitions to “Scouting America,” marking the first name change in its 114-year legacy.

The move is part of the organization’s bid to distance itself from its troubled past marred by a torrent of sexual abuse claims and subsequent bankruptcy while simultaneously embracing “inclusivity.”

The Gateway Pundit reported that the organization was nearly bankrupt after a series of woke decisions, including changing its policies to allow gay leaders and allowing girls to join. Those decisions had a major impact on the organization’s bottom line.

This change is yet another surrender to the ongoing “woke” agenda permeating longstanding American institutions. This is another surrender to political correctness, prioritizing superficial inclusivity over the core values that once made the Boy Scouts an iconic organization.

For over a century, the Boy Scouts of America has stood as a pillar of traditional American values, providing millions of young boys with formative experiences focused on leadership, self-reliance, and camaraderie.

In its press release, Scouting America stated that the change will take effect on February 8, 2025, coinciding with the organization’s 115th anniversary.

“The Boy Scouts of America will rebrand to Scouting America, reflecting the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcome every youth and family in America to experience the benefits of Scouting,” the organization said.

President and CEO Roger A. Krone claimed, “Though our name will be new, our mission remains unchanged: we are committed to teaching young people to be Prepared. For Life. This will be a simple but very important evolution as we seek to ensure that everyone feels welcome in Scouting.”

The name change is meant to reflect the organization’s supposed commitment to inclusivity following decisions in recent years to allow openly gay members and leaders and welcome girls into the ranks.

AP reported:

The organization steeped in tradition has made seismic changes after decades of turmoil, from finally allowing gay youth to welcoming girls throughout its ranks. With an eye on increasing flagging membership numbers, the Irving, Texas-based organization announced the name change Tuesday at its annual meeting in Florida.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” Roger Krone, who took over last fall as president and chief executive officer, said in an interview before the announcement.
The organization began allowing gay youth in 2013 and ended a blanket ban on gay adult leaders in 2015. In 2017, it made the historic announcement that girls would be accepted as Cub Scouts as of 2018 and into the flagship Boy Scout program — renamed Scouts BSA — in 2019.
There were nearly 1,000 young women in the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in 2021, including Selby Chipman. The all-girls troop she was a founding member of in her hometown of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, has grown from five girls to nearly 50, and she thinks the name change will encourage even more girls to realize they can join.
“Girls were like: ‘You can join Boy Scouts of America?’” said Chipman, now a 20-year-old college student and assistant scoutmaster of her troop.
Within days of the announcement that girls would be allowed, Bob Brady went to work. A father of two girls and a proud Eagle Scout himself, the New Jersey attorney eagerly formed an all-girls troop. At their first weekend gathering with other troops, the boys were happy to have the girls involved but some adult leaders seemed concerned, he recalled. Their worries seemed to melt away as soon as the girls led a traditional cheer around the campfire.

The very name “Boy Scouts of America” carried a timeless and specific message, one that emphasized the unique journey of boys learning to become responsible men. The removal of the word “Boy” in favor of a more neutral moniker is unnecessary and eroding concession to modern pressures.
