Russia was a criminal state under the Soviets who were basically gangsters. They ran the country down themselves. When Russia fell apart it was a rotting corpse and it rotted. The Russian people started putting the country back together and Putin took over. He killed or imprisoned anyone who opposed him and nationalized key industries and enriched himself and his buddies.
Serbia invaded the Muslim sub states of Yugoslavia and then committed atrocities against the civilians. It was NATO that stopped Serbia then the Croat military that defeated the Serbians on the ground.
Russia has two choices. Be run by criminals who take the wealth and squelch real economic growth or join the world in free trade and political freedom. Putin cloaks himself in Russian nationalism and The Church. But he is not pro Russian nor Christian. His actions against his own people show that.
