Muzzle Brakes poor form at the range?

Thank you sir. When I was working for the Missouri Department of Mental Health, you could get two long time state employees together and I swear they could carry on a conversation within which every other word really wasn`t a word but an acronym! Drove me to distraction!
I often find myself googling acronyms. Especially when texting my nephews, etc... It is definitely pretty annoying.

Is this a bad time to bring up my patented “flip-flop” mod? A .338LM with a stock too short by 1”. Solution? A pair of dollar store 1” thick foam girls flip-flops. Cut, grind to fit, 100mph tape to existing stock and butt plate.

Cost: $2
Solution: 95%
Worth: priceless
You from Kentucky son? That's some shit I would be capable of myself sir.

That's the way my wife (of 8 years as of yesterday) feels when I talk about guns or airplanes. She makes up calibers and models of guns. Sometimes she makes up real ones unknowingly.

Every industry thrives on them these days. It really helps when someone can or will send you a list/key, however informal.
Oh....They had a list alright, but there was no way you could keep up with a conversation and still be thumbing like mad through said list! And believe me, there were new acronyms every day!! It was so bad one time I lost it, " For God`s sake, do you make these things up as you go along!? Speak English!!

It's like the commercials you see for various illnesses/diseases, each with an acronym. Do you suffer from DFH? (Dipshit From Hell).
Then there's the list of side effects with the person whispering each of them in super rapid succession... "May cause a condition typically known as hot dog fingers". It's insane I tell you!

I watched a video by Tom Beckstrand explain how shooting magnums with a break can cause TBI. No thanks! Too many great magnum suppressors to use a brake for me. Do your brain a favor, use a can.

I had absolutely no idea about this phenomenon until some others such as yourself pointed it out on this thread. It makes complete sense to me now, but I had honestly never thought about it until reading it here. My thoughts, as I expressed briefly somewhere above, are that even using a can won't save you long term. Cans reduce recoil a bit less than a brake, but mitigate the sound level much better obviously.

Those of us who shoot magnum rifles, either with a brake or suppressor are still getting a pretty good poke every time we pull the trigger. This most certainly has the effect of jarring your head instantly while your brain stays put and gets rattled inside of your dome. Since this is what concussions are made of, I'm willing to wager no good will come from it long term, regardless of which device you run on a magnum rifle.

Pro soccer players that head the ball often seem to have measurable cognitive decline vs. the general population as well as more brain problems later in life.

“Astronauts during rocket launch may experience a few g’s of acceleration,” said Lyndia Wu, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia who led the study. “A car traveling at 35 mph running into a wall could experience about 30g of acceleration.”
In Wu’s study, heading often resulted in impacts of 22g or more, with some of the impacts surpassing 30g.
Heading also led to high rotational velocity or forces whipping the head sideways, she and her colleagues found.

This is totally not surprising to me as I played soccer when I was young. I always thought heading the ball was the epitome of idiocy. I’d do it and see some stars and my brain hurt.

I can’t even imagine sticking my head in front of a 65-80 mph ball coming off a male pro soccer player’s foot. And 131 mph is the fastest in a recorded match! (Ronny Heberson of Brazil’s Sport Club do Recife in 2006)

Heading is fricking stooooopid.

Coincidentally… my left ear problem started while I was shooting a very hard kicking gun with no recoil pad.

So I was at an outdoor range today zeroing a new scope... I have a 7RM 26" heavy barrel with an APA Little Bastard brake on it. The people on either side of me got quite upset and some guy's wife said "WHAT IS THAT???" in that super bitchy tone of voice. They complained to the RSO and asked if I was allowed to do that. Normally, I do try to sit on either end of the firing line, but being the weekend, the range was pretty full and that wasn't an option.

I generally try to be courteous when possible, but that lady almost made me say what I was actually thinking.

At any rate, the RSO told her she probably needs better earplugs and moved the people on either side of me somewhere else.

Is there an etiquette to this? I was just sighting in a new scope for god's sake (and a few rounds for load development).

You paid the money they can fuck right off

Like the fucking karens complaining about someone in front reclining his seat in an airplane

I'm wondering if studies have been done on "working girls" engaging in certain acts of the trade. The repeated head motion over time may cause some trauma as well.

Sorry fellas, just trying to add some levity here.

I workin the telcom industry, we have a saying for acronyms... TDMA Too Damn Many Acronyms. Then some genius in the industry decided to give it its own acronym Time Domain Multiplexing Algorithm. And in a few years someone will come up with another for it. SMH...

When I am at the range I do run muzzle brakes on all my rifles except for mt 22lr's. We have 9 benches to shoot from on the 200 yard range and is open to the public Thursday, Sat and Sun with members 7 days a week. So I am working up a load for my 375ct and am the only one there so I pick the bench all the way to the left leaving 8 open benches. So I had shot 3 group of 3 and was letting my barrel cool when a truck pulls us and parks right next to me. Two guy who I don't know get out and start setting up right next to me. I tell them they may want to move down a bench or two because my rifle is loud. One of the guys said don't worry about us. So I wait for them the set up their AR-15's. The range is cold so the can set theirs target up an 100 and 150 yards. We then get back I said ready to go hot and they said yes. I sit down and fire my first round and the guy that said don't worry about my jumps up and yells stop. I look at him and said what? He then tells I can't continue to shot because mt rifle is to loud. I then chambered another round and fired. This time he says you need to stop!!. So I chambered and fire my 3 round for that group. Then stood up and asked what was his problem. He then tells me 50 Cal's are not allowed. I have been a member of this range since it open and have no clue who these guys are. I asked how long have you been a member he said the joined last month. I then tell this is not a 50 cal and yes they are allowed.
So at this point they a pissed and I don't give a shit. I then finish my last 3 groups and put the 375ct away in the truck. I then pull out the 300nm and go to work checking groups with it. They shoot about 50 rounds each then leave but of course don't pick up there targets...Dickheads

I may be old school but if you can't handle the recoil, just shoot something smaller.
If you want to see hits, just train to shoot well with both eyes open and other basic shooting principles.
I did it at 500m with a varmint 6.5 Fagmoor and it was easy as you get near a second to get the scope back on target if it moves, do it well and nothing moves off.

I live in Wokeworld not far from Shitney Australia and the shooting sports and hunting were growing despite the corrupt governments and media push to make law-abiding shooters feel like criminals.

As shooters are their own worst enemies here and as ranges decided not to send them to one end and blast each other, the numbers will start to drop, how many newbies with good hearing will go back to get muzzle blasted?
The old range Fudds don't care because most are near deaf from shooting without hearing protection and nothing will protect you from the worst muzzle blasters shooting you in the head from a meter or 3.

If the latest tactical and PRS thing takes over, we will have another generation of old deaf shooters.

The footballers and old boxers have proven the repeated concussion effects, they are going near brain dead long before dementia should have set in.

Not this back duck, I will shift ranges, pack up and go, or give up range shooting and just hunt.

Sad as I am a shooting addict and love all types of shooting and shooting variety.

I can go to clay shooting ranges and .22 ranges with no health risks but I was taking a liking to the longer range shooting and have no property access to do it.

If the trend empties the ranges and dies off, I guess I can return but it's not good for the sport.

I just bought that ATS and should have it in a day or two. I'd check into that MDT but can't afford to be a brake evaluator. LOL When I start looking at something promising, my urge to purchase it often wages war with my budget and common sense.
I talked with Yannick who does the muzzle break reviews on youtube (french candian dude, he is on here) sounds like the ATS reviewed well.

Only assholes recline their seats on a flight. Just saying.

We generally view freedom ending where someone else's rights start.

Being a dickhead at a range does nothing but scare and piss off newer shooters, ones who may decide they dont like guns. It may keep people away who would otherwise enjoy the hobby. People like that should get invited to leave and never come back. Ranges should be enjoyed by everyone and part of that, is not making other peoples experiences miserable.

Could have formulated it in a nicer way.
Just because something is legal, does not make it just.
Especially when you know what you are doing is actively causing issues for others.
I have the right to act like a spastic and cause great uncomfort to everyone around me, but doing so knowing that, would make me an asshole.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

Here's where our philosophies diverge DBD. I am kind to others and never try to be rude. However, attempting to legislate away the rude behavior of others has never worked in my experience.

I hold that it is someone's inalienable right to be a asshole. It is also my right to call them one.

Forcefully foisting our ideals upon others is the very definition of intolerance and is quite evident with certain types who claim to be the most tolerant of people until you disagree with their viewpoint and they become unhinged and "hurt".

The line in the sand gets drawn if they touch me. That gets someone a punch right in their shit. Concussive therapy if you will.

This is why it is important to pay attention to sentence structure and grammar in school kids. One slip up can change the whole intended point or subject of a sentence. I fall victim to it all of the time because I am a hill jack and our vernacular is understood only by those like us. LOL

I got my own keys to the range, I'll just go there later when you are done.
But if you come with an aggressive brake while people are shooting there already, and you don't check if that's okay with people, you are definitely the asshole.
I sometimes shoot braked as well, but I don't just start blasting with no warning, that would make me an asshole.
Not illegal to show some basic courtesy to other people, it's actually one of the basics of a functioning society.
Of course, if brakes are the norm at your local range, then it would be retarded to go there and whine about it.
That would be like the people that moved right next to our local range that whine about noise, utterly retarded.
All depends on the context.

This will be off topic but worthy of note gentlemen.

Men. We all think we're so smart, but we are not. It just dawned on me (because today is Leap Day depending upon which part of the Globe you reside) that we are fools.

All men who choose to marry a lovely lady should do so on Leap Day. That way, men worldwide would only get in trouble every 4 years for forgetting the wedding anniversary as opposed to annually.

Who's the genius now!

But if you come with an aggressive brake while people are shooting there already, and you don't check if that's okay with people, you are definitely the asshole.

And do what if the person says to me that they don't want me there? I paid the membership or range fee just like they did. I get to pick where I shoot no one else

I really don’t view brakes as making people assholes.

To me, it’s more comparable to smelling bad. I won’t hold it against them, it’s not illegal, been known to myself, and unless it’s really bad (like the guy with the RPR I posted about previously), I won’t even remember it. I just don’t want to be seated next to them.

Also, much like smelling bad, there are multiple alternatives available in 2024 to most people who shoot, but every now and then, it can’t be helped.

The steel matches off the benches at Dead Zero allow brakes, so our little crew shoots together and tries not to put anyone next to a braked rifle. The worst are the guys that show up with their braked 7mm Mag “deer rifle” (they’re practicing for that 1,000 yard shot on a white tail they’re gonna get in middle TN😂). Nothing quite like trying to shoot with a trash can over your head while someone randomly hits it with an axe handle.

I’d guess PRS comps are different because usually no one is right next to you. Only ever shot one, and that was rimfire, so I may be totally wrong there.

BTW, I do recline my seat. It’s an 1-1/2”. And only the top 1/2 of the seat goes back (at least on a 737). Doesn’t bother me if someone reclines in front of me. Not real sure when this became such a societal issue.

It's not bad to shoot braked, but it's about as enjoyable as being sodomized with a splintered broom handle for the poor bastard next to you.
That you don't even bother to say anything first, yeah, that does make you an asshole.
Same mentality as those that do "pup play" or whatever the fuck it's called, sure you have the right to be an utter degenerate, but doing it in public is pretty fucking nasty, and people will judge you for it.

To me blowing your muzzle blast on another competitor is rude, but where it really comes into play is on the squad prone stages where you are lined up and blowing crap into the actions of the guys on your left and right. A rag over your action, and a flush with lighter fluid is SOP, but it's a pain in the ass. I always ask to be squaded with suppressors, and on stages like that I try to have a can on at least one of my sides...

The airplane seats? It's because there are those among us on this Earth who are "nitpickers". I don't understand them because being pissed off doesn't feel good to me and I can't imagine it does to them either.

However, they choose to lose their ever loving minds over things they can't control, and for what? Feeling horrible and angry inside? That is not for me. I choose to roll with the punches and mitigate any bullshit if possible. If it's not possible, I'll either remove myself from it or suck it up and get on with it.

That goes for this brake discussion as well, if someone insist on shooting a loud brake next to you, just move, you won't convince them not to.

OK..I always warn people but I always like to stay away from people as well. Where I am, there is always room to be physically separated from others so it isn't a problem. As I said previously, brakes are the norm here due to the laws regarding NFA items. People still complain about it at times but that is the nature of some.

Being courteous is important to me but it requires reciprocal courtesy as well otherwise I can be "Nik the Dick".

When I take a Frank class, we are segregated into two groups - people with cans and Barbarians...LOL. Works well enough. Two years ago I was situated next to a gentleman using a 300 PRC with an effective brake. Fortunately I was not having to fire at the same time he was.

That`s certainly a courteous and reasonable approach IMHO. Sometimes I find myself wondering if those who knowingly inflict others with an action that is well known to be potentially obnoxious, if not physically hazardous, just because they have the "right" to do so, extend that approach to other interrelationships with others(?). Sooner or later such actions could well result in increases in dental bills if said actions are inflicted upon the wrong individual. My seven decades on the planet have taught me that karma can indeed be a bitch!

Stupidity is part of the human genome. There are those of us who seek to overcome that, utilizing experience or actually researching and educating ourselves to things we are unfamiliar with.

Many, however, just dig their heels in based on rumors, ignorance and like minded retards who they will only surround themselves with. You don't notice you're a retard if you are among other retards. And when they unknowingly come across a non-retard and notice their affliction, they dive back into the retarded pool and swim with their kind to feel comfortable.

The anti-suppressor people who believe this device is nefarious and used only by assassins, fall into the category mentioned directly above. Ignorance personified and they will not waiver. Present a legitimate argument to one and they will beeline it to the retarded pool and dive in with a quickness. Covering their ears and shouting "NANANANANA" like a child.

Jesus fuck....it's a gun range....you are going to hear loud noises.

If that offends your candy ass, take up airsoft.

If someone shows up shooting a gun allowed by club rules, and you bitch to an RSO about it because YOU don't like it, you're a fucking Karen prick.

That being said use some common sense, and a little decency...if youve got a braked 50, maybe inform the line first...

...and if you see a father teaching his kids to shoot for the first time, maybe wait until they leave first if you know you have something loud...
