Here's the long and short of it. My job is soon to be gone, so I am in a downsize mode to be able to breath when the ax falls. Gonna sell my vortex viper pst. to downgrade. Already sold my Gap10.
Looking for a lower priced scope for my 700 308. Uses, punching paper out to 600, dinging silhouettes, deer, occ. Fclass for fun, and whatever else. Not going to spend over $300. Want tactical knobs, mildot, or duplux crosshairs. Here's my picks:
Super sniper, 10x, 16x
Weaver
Bushnell 10 tactical
Like to hear from someone's that been there, shot the scopes.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

sorry for your news, I have had all of those, and my pick would be the SS. can ussually find them 250-275, then use the rest to buy a case of beer

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

You might want to check out the Millet as well. I don't see you saving much money by selling a used PST and buying a newer lesser scope. I'd keep the PST and eat some Ramen noodles.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

my millet ran flawless for 200 rds on a 300 rum. sorry to hear about the job

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

bushnell 5-15x40 on ebay for $299
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bushnell-Elite-5...=item27c785e09f

I only suggest this as a low budget option. for 1/2 that you get their 10x40, i even have one of those I'll sell you for $150.
the question is how long to plan to keep a low budget scope? if it isn't going ot be long go with 10x40, it's worked fine for a lot of military snipers and you'll never get confused about mils.
That's what I would do if I HAD to. But I would try and hang on to your Vortex as long as possible, to see if you can get away with keeping it.

soory to hear abou the job, wish you the best of luck!

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

I have a 10x40 mil/mil from bushnell. It's a great scope on he cheap.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

Mil/mil Super Sniper in 10x would fit the bill perfectly.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

SS are good scopes. Sorry about the bad news, most of us have been there.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

^^ agree with above, you are preparing for reduced income by incurring loss. A custom rifle topped with a Vortex PST will bring more money in a pinch than a budget build.

If you sell the Vortex, you will more than likely sell at a loss.

Keep the Vortex and look at other ways to cut budget, if the sport is that important to you (it is to me), then find ways to supplement your income.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

Im in the same boat right now, Ive been working where im at for 13 years, my wife works at the same place she was there for 10, they laid my wife off last week and I only have another month or 2 till im done. I know its tough but you can collect unemployment thats about 75% of what you make normally, depending on what your insurance and stuff costs you you walk home with the same amount as you were making, im putting applacations out right now I took the day off to run around I put4 applacations out today so far. if I dont find work by the time we close down Ill collect for a while but im hoping to find something first. I was thinking about selling my nightforce NXS but I can make it with out having to do any of that for now.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

Sad to hear about your bad news. I've got some advice.

1) Due to high popularity and perpetual backorders, PSTs sell really fast. In other words, you don't really need to sell it now. Wait till a few weeks before you actually need the money. With any luck, you'll never need to sell it.

2) The cost difference between what you will sell your used PST for and what a new, cheaper scope will cost is not that much. You'll take a loss and frankly if you have rent or a mortgage it won't buy you much time.

That being said, I like the Super Snipers. There are usually some available for sale used here in the boards and on SWFA Samplelist. There are two 6x for sale right now at $250:

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

If you want to go extremely cheap, I had/have a centerpoint 4-16 that worked fine out to 600 for me. Mil-dot, 1/4 moa turrets,
Less that $100.
The turrets were a little small, but had an audible and tactile "click". I only had it on for about 100 rounds, but didn't have an issue with it losing zero.
The class was clear enough, though much past 600 got pretty dicey.
I've heard that these can be a crapshoot as to whether you get a useable one, but when you do they're a good value for what you're paying.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

Look into the Mueller APT...i had a review on it somewhere on here shortly after they came out...they sell for about 150 and are clear, bright, and track true.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

Many thanks for all the responses. Yes would like to keep the present scope but with no job in the future, and retiree medical insurance taken away, a guy can end up on a short rope real fast.

Cant' seem to find the swafa 16x, Anyone's thoughts on the vortex crossfire's or diamond back's?

If you're really going to sell it the Mueller might be a good option. If you're going to go cheap for a while you might as well go real cheap. It's not like you are selling a $3k plus scope which would fetch you a decent chunk of cash.

I've been in your position before and it really sucks. There is nothing good about having to sell your favorite stuff that you worked hard for. I'm confident that you'll be able to replace it in the future if you do sell.

A rimfire with irons can be a lot of fun on the cheap as well.

Good luck.

Re: Help to downgrade scopes--bummer

I've had a 10x40 boush & lamb on a 700p for about ten years. Has been a dependable scope, tough and tracks true. From what I can tell it is about the same as the bushnell tactical line. I don't plan on getting rid of it and still shoot it with confidence.
That is if you have no other choice but to sell you pst.
Good luck brother with finding work.
