M40a1 build guide

Re: M40a1 build guide

update and request. I Gave my '90s dated MRT sling to my dad. I need another preferable an '80s dated one to go with my early 6digit smear.

If anyone has an extra or a line on one I would greatly appreciate it

Time for a bump.

My dad picked this beeeeuty up this week from my buddies CO who wants to get a KAC instead of hold onto this rifle. No complaints here

Full spec build done by Eric Reed (hydrant stamp) with MST100. Going to shoot it this weekend and see how she does.

G-prefix action, and I have a MRT marked sling from the mid 90's sitting in my safe that will go nice on this.

crazy how the color pops with some sunlight.

in other news, I got the call from GAP last week letting me know they sending mine in for coating and it will be done soon. The last 4 years of collecting parts is about to pay off. Very excited to shoot both of these rifles. (kinda pist at my dad, he doesnt wait a day, collect any parts, and gets his as soon as he decides he wants one, and ends up paying less as well!! lol thats the way it is I guess. LUCKY)

Re: M40a1 build guide

We don't see many of these rifles in matches for several reasons. The optic isn't ideally suited for competition, the BDC doesn't match most loads, some of us don't want to shoot a piece of history, etc...

My match rifle is down with a shot out barrel so I pulled out my spec M40a1 out of the safe and shot it in a modified F-class match yesterday. Shot middle of the pack and had a blast doing it! My shoulder is a little sore today from the bandaid recoil pad.

All ranges are marked except for 800 yards which are unmarked.

Not too bad for an old girl!

Not too shabby, there, long-shot! Either you had a zero-wind day or you've mastered the art of reading the wind. Thanks for posting this.

My M40A1 custom WAS my long range (1000 yard) match gun. As soon as I got her done I competed with her for several years in the early and mid 1990s. My scores hovered in the 180s and low 190s, with my best being 194-6X. This was all with Federal Match 168s or equivalent reloads. The bullets were just going subsonic at that range and beginning to keyhole according to a report from the butts, but she seemed to do just fine. I think it's time for me to relive those days and try it with 175grainers, if my eyes can keep up. Fun stuff.

I can assure you I've mastered nothing!

I like these matches for checking dope because we start at 100 yards and move back in 100 yard increments firing 5 shots and marking at every station so you can really see your dope out to 800 yards.

The MST-100 takes a little tweaking to shoot using my DA cards, but it's possible and I think my dope looked pretty good considering.

I had more fun shooting this than my usual match rifle even giving up 10-15 points for the scope. Good time!

Re: M40a1 build guide

Long-shot: VERY IMPRESSIVE! Thanks for sharing, and the rig you 'pulled from the safe' seemed to do quite well for you! Nice job!

nice rifle and nice shooting

but I'm curious how you mounted the Harris bipod, as the spec M40A1 rifle does not normally feature such a provision, i.e. a stud...?

There was a member here that made some custom bipod studs that thread right into the same hole as the swivel. Works great and doesn't change the stock at all.

Sorry brother! I didn't know if you were still making them and didn't want to speak for you. Great product and allows me to embarrass myself with more than 1 rifle...

I did a fair amount of research before I had GAP do my build. There weren't many people out there who could actually clip slot the receiver and do it to spec. GAP and Texas Brigade Armory were two and there was a bit of debate of the correct spec at the time. I just went ahead and had GAP do the entire build by Eric while he was still employed there. I couldn't be happier with the results and I'll be shooting it again this weekend while my match gun is still down with re-barreling.

All would have been hits on a "man" target, even a "half" man target...just as designed. Faster than an "F" class rifle and more deadly in combat roles. I used to take my sniper team to the nationals to shoot across the course; the team would always get pissed at me because to them it wasn’t fair. Well in fact I didn’t bring them there to win; they were there to leave better snipers. When they went back to "work" they didn’t use slings, jackets and they operated in an environment were the targets almost NEVER stand still. After two weeks of shooting and wind-doping at the nationals they were "killers" when it came to jumping in their rifle from 30k feet, stalking for miles, adding unknown distance and lightning speed. Some of the best training!!!!! IMO

I agree. I think the competitive shooters among us look for every advantage and sometimes forget just how effective systems like the A1 can be for hitting a man sized target out to 800 yards. I may miss with this system, but I can sure make you nervous!

It's amazing just how many steps are removed when shooting this platform compared to my normal rifle. Adjust parallax... not necessary, check dope... well just dial the closest range, adjust magnification... not an option, Put cross hairs on target and pull trigger... Check!

Re: M40a1 build guide

I have been hiding a six digit receiver in the safe for a couple years. When the original return stocks came out..i could have had GAP build the correct M40a1 on the return stock I purchased. Ended up going another direction. Starting to get the itch again...now the kids are out of college and dad needs a new toy.

Re: M40a1 build guide

I recently bought an m40a1 clone. I need to clips lot the receiver and oxidize the barrel. I have the option if sending it to George at GAP. But someone told me that randy from rd precision in Glendale ca builds USmc spec as well? Just wondering if anyone can confirm this or not?

Re: M40a1 build guide

Does anyone here have a Williams trigger guard for sale ?

I picked up a used factory winchester trigger guard which measures approximately 5/8 wide but just received my M40A1 stock today and the trigger guard is cut out to almost 3/4 wide. The stock does utilize the two piece winchester bottom metal but I'm confused at this point.

Anyone have an idea ???

Re: M40a1 build guide

I believe the difference is between pre and post 64 metal...

Re: M40a1 build guide

I think your right. I'm looken everywhere right now. I had 18 weeks to get it all ready now I'm in a rush.

Thanks 2ballcane

Re: M40a1 build guide

You need the post 64 LA - especially for the floor plate. I went through this myself. check your email for pdf.

Re: M40a1 build guide

M40A1 builders, on 8-9 Sept 2012 there's going to be an Enhanced Vintage Sniper Match Being held at Quantico, VA. It's enhanced because it will be Vintage Sniper Rifles with the addition of the Vietnam Era rifles and the Catagory built for you guys, the M40A1/A3/A5 Group! Time to show off what your builds can do. More info listed in the Vintage section!

Re: M40a1 build guide

Its amazing how the finish got worn on these early M40A1s. My school rifle was the same, all silver...

Re: M40a1 build guide

man i want one so bad, that is a good looking rifle . i just dont have enough saved up yet , cant remember but some company builds them to spec . was thinking of just buying one and not building , might be cheaper i dont know ? some people say thay are not able to get comfortable with the the cheek weld & eye relief.

Re: M40a1 build guide

I am building a rifle that is going to pretty close to a M40A1 and I am needing to get my stock painted in these colors to match the original stocks. Does anyone know the names of the 3 colors and who could do a really accurate match paint job?

Re: M40a1 build guide

There is always the M40 SSA out by Remington and Iron Brigade. I see them on the gun auctions once in a while.

Re: M40a1 build guide

Thank you very much for taking the time to compile this info. Much appreciated.

Re: M40a1 build guide

Its always good to see new pics of a nice M40A1!! I thought i'd share a photo of mine. Built by Mike Lau at TBA, It was a bit of a process to get it here but well worth it.

Enjoy

Re: M40a1 build guide

Can anyone here give me some info on this:

When was the latest camo pattern of the M40A1 starting to see service ? )I'm thinking of the "non smear" forest camo pattern.

When did the last Redfield scopes beeing replaced whit the Unerlt scopes ?

From a reputable source, the Marine Corps had fully switched over to the Unertl scopes by 1983-84 (this would include the reserves, which were the last to change over). Maybe someone has a more precise date.

This one ('76/'77) or the most latest one...

M40-a22.jpg

There was a transitional period between the Redfield and the Unertl. In '77 the USMC received "Colt 3x20" for provost marshal activity. '77 and '78 saw the Weaver T10 and T16 being used at Qauntico. '80 saw the first order of the Unertl. Refer to 10xview's post to the fill the gap.
