Help hauling away trash is always appreciated, but I completely understand when it comes to the gas since we're driving from Silverdale

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

I will be bringing my 25% and my 66% IPSC targets. If anyone else wants to bring their steel it would be much appreciated since more steel means less congestion on targets.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

I'm pretty sure my truck can handle all the trash hauling that needs to be done, so no one should feel the need to bring another truck. I'll bring my 100% silhouette, & can bring a few more smaller squares if needed.

Now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't worry about what I spend on gas. Every time I pull the trigger on my 338LM it's like burning a gallon of gas in my truck. Are my values all messed up or what?

Also, I have a couple of AR500 1/2" plates (1) 12", (1) 8" I can bring, but only have one stand for them.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Flashfire,
I know what you mean about ammo prices... Many years ago when I lived in Oregon, I bought a beautiful, legally registered Chi-Com AK47 that was a viet nam bring back. This was before 7.62x39 ammo was commonly available back around 1982-84, and paying $1.00 per round back then was like buying ammo for your 338 now. I figured that a $20 bill would last longer if I set it on fire than if I ran $20 worth of ammo through the rifle, so I sold/swapped it for a national match M1A and a bunch of cash.

Although it would be nice to have now, I really don't miss that rifle..I got lots more fun out of the M1A.

CLEAN-UP INFO
I'm bringing two 66% IPSC targets and T-post mounting systems to the cleanup tomorrow. I have more T-posts if they are needed. But as I'm car pooling, I'm not bringing up all my steel, or mounting gear.

I'll also be bringing an ax, folding pruning saw, lopping shears, machette, gloves, and an Epi-pen if I can find it.. I just realized how useless the epi-pens are if you can't locate them fast.

Someone, please let me know if there is more stuff I can bring, or if I can leave some stuff home rather than bringing duplicates of stuff.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

A machette should be all that's needed. If one guy can bring a weed whacker that would be nice. I have one I can bring, but I'll be bringing a truckload of trash back with me. So I don't really want to. I'll be bringing a 100% silhouette for the 1250yd tgt. And an extra stand.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

We're bringing some steel as well including a 100%, 66%, & 25% IPSC with some other miscellaneous steel. We should also have a weed whacker and a machete, but if someone wants to bring another weed whacker it wouldn't hurt seeing as they always break down or run out of string lol...

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Hey guys,
I ended up stuck in NY this week for work and couldn't get a flight back until later this afternoon. Sorry I couldn't make it out to help and see all of you again. I'd much rather be out there working in the sun than sitting at JFK right now...

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

it was very nice to meet all of you guys and once again thanks for helping me out

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Well, by the time we got done shooting, & took down the target @ 1250yd (Abdul) it was too late to go to the dump, so I'll do that tomorrow.
Thank You everyone for getting together for todays clean up. I really appreciate it guys.
You should know that after Broker, etc. took off for home the wind almost died out completely, & we were able to get some center grouped consecutive hits on Abdul. After that I switched over to the clay's, but only fired 4 rnds at one missing all 4 times by an inch to about 4 inches. But I did get real good data to work with my ballistic computer, so I can now go hunting with confidence.
Again, thanks all for helping out today. Hope everyones trip home was uneventfull.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

A big shout out to everyone today. It was great meeting everyone for the first time. I enjoyed pitching in to keep the area tidy of trash and clearing out the scrub brush in front of the target areas. Hopefully it will stay clear for at least a year. Big thank you to all for the general orientation you all gave me and Coby and making us feel welcome and part of the community. I enjoyed stretching my rifle's legs a bit beyond what she normal shoots. Fun times! Hopefully we can meet up again soon.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

I didn't take any, but I'm sure someone did. Besides, you've seen all the spots before.
How are things out in the sticks now days? Got shooting spots out in the wheat fields now, or are you still going down to the river?

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

We spent from 0900- 1300 cleaning and doing maintenance. We even created a new smaller 2-person shooting area around 800-850. Unfortunately I was preoccupied with shooting this time and I didn't take any photos which I'm kicking myself for... Sorry guys.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

I snapped a couple crappy cellphone pics. I was too busy taking a nap on the bum-couch to take photos of the cleanup.

Thanks again to Broker for organizing this and to everyone else that contributed. It is great seeing like minded people come together and help improve the image of this hobby.

I also want to thank the newcomers Steve & Coby for joining us. You guys were awesome to hangout and shoot with. <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">And thank you to everyone who participated in helping us since it was more "clean-up" then shooting and you guys were all great sports about it. </span></span>

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

I had a great time yesterday, and really enjoyed meeting the new people. I got a bit of a burn on my face, but it isn't too bad..farmer's tan I guess.

I'm pleased that no one twisted an ankle, or knee, got cut or received any other injuries. Getting a pickup and a half's worth of trash out of there was pretty cool.

I'm still surprised by all the junk some jerks leave out there. I don't mind people shooting odd targets, as long as they take all their junk back out with them. Drinking beer, then shooting up the bottles and leaving the glass laying around is definitely uncool. So were all the rusty nails laying in the road from burning up pallets. Not a neat place to get a flat.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Well the cost of dumping up here has more than quadrupled since I was there last. Used to be about $16.00/ half ton. Today it was $21.50/ 460lbs. I guess the state/county has to pay for all those road workers to stand around somehow.
Too bad you guys had to leave before the wind died down. I left a couple clay pigeons out there for you.

Not really shooting by the river anymore. Although all of those targets are still there in case I want to go shoot there. It is only 1.5 miles from my front door.

My new spot is on private property. Hills and valleys and a couple of cool canyons. Right now I have targets hung up from 300 yards to 2100 yards. I could probably go out to 3k yards but they 338 edge just has a hard time getting there

Mutt,
Get in touch with me...I have a propane tank, 10-12 foot hose, really nice regulator, and venturi type tube you can have for your knife forge if you can use it. I may even have an extra hammer if you need a single jack type hammer..

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Get ahold of us when you get back. There are several places where we shoot long. Depending on where you are there will be a place within reasonable driving range.

Will do! I'm stationed in Seattle, but willing to drive anywhere. I am in the process of building or buying another gun to shoot distance with (I sold all my rifles prior to joining) So hopefully I'll have something when I get back!

Coast Guard? There's several places out to 1K+ within 2 hours drive both North and East, then a few places South out to 550.

PRACTICAL RIFLE MATCH CORRECTION;

AtOne correctly pointed out that the 3rd Saturday in October is the 20th, not the 27th. I have corrected the posting about the match so I have the right match date. Matches are always the 3rd Saturday of the month.

If moving the orientation/safety brief from 8am to 8:30am helps someone out, let me know, and I'll be happy to shift it for you.

A big thanks to AtOne for saving me from a huge screw up.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Just a note to all that are coming to FSC Dec 1&2 I thought up a couple new stages last night. One involving barb wire, and another involving a couch. This will turn your dry fire practice at home into reality. As a bonus you will become a true "couch commando"

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Going hunting on Thursday for 3 1/2 weeks anyway. Hope I'm not hunting in sunshine, & 60*. Still have a bunch of little $[]it to get done. At least I was able to get my rifles all straightened out last week.

Very cool assignment. I saw that ship on something like the Discovery channel and was thinking what a great assignment that could be. Looking forward to getting out shooting with you after you return.

Among the guys in this group, I'm quite certain we can find something for you to shoot if you don't have your rifle built or bought by then. So don't worry about not having a rifle after you get back, we will find something for you to shoot. I know I have some I could bring and share.

Thanks! It's an interesting unit to say the least. Right now we are transiting north in the Bering Sea enroute to our final science mission of this patrol.

As to a rifle, I think I'm going to start working on a Rem 700 build...I'm considering 300winmag. I had a 700 in 308 that I loved and I regret selling it...so I think I'm going to pick one up when I get back to WA.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Cybnew, from a practical shooting aspect you might want to consider one of the 6.5's. Just tallied the figures from Vu's match at Norcal attended by eighty of the best shooters around, 26 260 Rem, 16 243, 10 6.5 Creedmoor, the rest also ran, big surprise only a few 6.5x47.

Yes and Yes. The only time it's closed is for matches which can be found on the event calendar. Unknown, A D, Bennybooboo, kman2061, and myself are members there. Before you can get your badge and bring guests though you have to attend an orientation.

I agree with Marty. If I were to pick-up something new I would probably want a 260 or 243...

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Email sent to Cbynew echoing the recommendation of a 260 over the 300.

The 243, 6XC, and many other really fine 6mm and 6.5mm cartridges will reach out plenty far enough. My 260 doesn't go transonic until around 1700 yards. Since I have owned the rifle, the longest shot I have taken with either my 300 or 260 was 1250 yards.

Logically, I see lots more benefits to going with 6.5 bore rather than the 300, and I have both.

About the only thing the 300 will do is have more energy than the 6.5mm when it tags the steel. But barrels in a 300 last about one third as long as they would with a 6.5mm.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Cybnew,
As long as we have you considering the 6.5 bores, you might want to look into the 6.5 Grendel, the 6mmx45 (5.56x45 nato necked up to 6mm/.243), and there is a variant of the 6.5 Grendel that is necked down to 6mm.

These rounds fit into the AR15 sized rifle receivers, and don't go transonic until well after 1000 yards. They excell at having low recoil, wind drift and elevation drop of around the 300 Win mag!

Things to consider:

1. The Grendel reaches out furthest.
2. The 6mmx45 requires only a barrel change to convert an AR15 to it. You an even use AR15 magazines. The Grendel and it's variants require Grendel magazines.
3. Any of these cartridges is a vast improvement over the 5.56x45 in terms of reach. Normal 5.56x45 cartridges go transonic around 600-800 yards depending on the bullet used. However, many people get the 5.56 to go much further by single loading rounds with heavy for caliber bullets. I'm referring only to cartridges that will feed from a magazine.
4. For practical rifle, or tactical type matches, these cartridges have great reach, very low recoil, yet hit plates much harder than 5.56x45 rounds will.

You will have to spend some time comparing the rounds to see which one best fits the type of shooting you want to do. I would look into wind drift, the distance at which the bullet goes transonic, and how much the various cartridge's bullets drop at 500, 750, 1000, 1250 yards. After you figure those three factors, you can begin looking at the cost for components to make ammo (unless you always buy factory), and cost to get set up.

Although I'm a true fan of the 6.5 Grendel, I think the 6mmx45 is an outstanding cartridge to consider. All you need is a different barrel, and can even neck up GI brass to load it. The powder charge for that round is essentially the same charge as you would use for a 5.56 bullet. However, you end up with a bullet that remains supersonic for a great deal more distance.

Depending on hour your duty and off time goes onboard your ship, you may have lots of time to crunch numbers.

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

Hey guys I'm back home until January. Does anybody know of an FFL around Tacoma that won't charge me the sales tax to have MY OWN rifle shipped back here to me?

Re: Puget Sound Area Shooter's Group

If you bought the firearm in Washington annd can prove it, FFL does not have to charge you the sales tax.
