I just picked up a Beretta 92, I was giving it the hairy eyeball and the "combat crown" is noticeably askew. I mean not terribly but one can tell, also there is some chatter at about the 0530 position.
I have some time on a lathe but I was wondering more about speeds? I will use plenty of coolant, and plan on pretty much mimicking the same angle of the current crown, just making it more uniform and cleaning up the chatter.
Other than speeds, I'd imagine that starting on the inside of the barrel and working my way out with a single point would be the way to go but I am not sure?

Any wisdom would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Re-crown a pistol barrel...

Well shoot, I was hoping to avoid sending it back. According to google Dave Manson is the only game in town? There has to be a more conventional way of working with a chrome lined tube?

Re: Re-crown a pistol barrel...

Use a sharp .015"R triangle carbide coated insert. Set your compound at 11 degrees. Start at the center line and feed out with the compound rest.

Take about .005" max per cut until you clean it up, it should be fine.

Re: Re-crown a pistol barrel...

What's different about cutting and crowning a CL barrel?

People seem to be concerned about the chrome lining chipping away. In my limited experience with cutting down a few surplus FAL barrels, this is not a problem.
