I know Mega has discontinued the monolithic upper, but we had this planned before that came down the pipe. Still, the vast majority of it will be relevant to a standard MATEN build.

Part 1 is the introduction. We will install the fire control components in Part 2.

Rubbing salt into the wound. I had been planning a MATEN Tubular Rifle build for too long, and missed my chance. But for now I will watch this build series and wait to see what MEGA and Seekins bring us at SHOT.

Im not sure when I will finally learn that procrastination usually hurts.

Sorry, I really wish we could have gotten this done about three months ago, but it just wasn't possible to gather the support needed any sooner.

At least Mega is still building the MATEN sets. All you need is to select a different rail system.

Its not your fault Im an idiot. I have been running Mega since my first Gator back in 05' and I like thier stuff. They promise to top the MATEN with thier next large platform AR so I will wait and see what they have for us.

I've got my Mega MA-Ten Mono and have since taken apart to paint and reassembled, but still love watching the video. Your video is really informative for those that aren't familiar with the platform. I plan on watching the series just to see the components that you've selected.

Thanks for the video! If I hadn't already done the build myself it would have persuaded me to getting one. I love it!

If I remember correctly LMT had the patents locked down regarding a lot of the details that pertained to a monolithic .30 ar-10 style upper receiver.

Kind of blows that Mega can't produce the Mono's and paying royalties apparently is not a option. The parts seem top notch.

Dear John,

You are a bastard. There I was, minding my own business when I came across your latest build video. You already suckered me into building a gun on the SPS AAC-SD platform with your Budget Precision build series (it's at the shop getting bedded into a McMillan A5 this week, can't wait to get it back!) and now you've gone and given me the itch for a MATEN.

My girlfriend thinks I'm a little crazy, as I sit here muttering over a spreadsheet, pricing out all the components I'm going to need for this thing. I'm looking forward to seeing your choice in barrel and buttstock (leaning towards the Magpul PRS myself).

Keep the vids coming, it's great work and you've made so much knowledge easily accessible. Thanks for sharing!

Im a big fan of a nice palm swell and i like the grip, but the goo irks me. there has to be a better way to do that. Im with you, leave it off and let us figure it out.

John I haven't watched this series (finished my MaTen last year) but I always catch and enjoy your Monday show (and intend on doing a build similar to your wife's based on the ADL) so I don't know if you have covered this. If anyone is interested in this build but can't find the mono upper the Mega plain upper uses DPMS thread pattern and there are 2 different height variants of the upper.

Both are sold but and according to the pdf the new version is the low profile. Just be aware of your upper's dimensions when buying a rail for which one to get. See high profile vs low profile purchasing here:

It is definitely something I plan to cover when we get to the barrel assembly even though it doesn't apply with the Monolithic. Because the Monolithic is no longer produced, I am trying to make this as easy as possible for someone with a standard MATEN upper to follow along.

The patent issue was only for their Maten <span style="font-weight: bold">Monolithic Upper</span>

All other Maten products are good to go. Also, Mega has just introduced a new replacement to their previous Monolithic upper

Are you finding the nitrided barrel more difficult to break in? Mine was way over gassed with the JP BCG and silent captured spring. Really rough on brass. That DA7 adjustable gas block is next on the list.

This barrel isn't nitrided. It's 416R and black oxide finished. One interesting point though is that Rainier's website says they are 5R, however our barrel only has three lands and grooves. Not a big deal as this can actually assist in getting more velocity and less bullet deformation.

We are running a JP Spring and DPMS rifle Buffer, but I would really like to give the JP Captured system a try.
 
Come to Rockcastle. Some guys are having a LR session monthly with steel out to 1535. While you're there you can run mine. The minimal recoil might surprise you. Wait until I get the DA7 though. ?

What is this Rockcastle thing you speak of? Is it in TN? I've been looking for a place to shoot out past the 200 yds my local range in N. AL has!
