"I bet there wasn't much shooting going on up there today. Been raining here all day. And probably fog as well up there."

Thats what I was thinking. I wanted to go but I am between scopes and ready to do a new barrel on the 243, which is sitting at 2650 rounds.

Pssh... I hear smooth bores are sub-sub-moa...

Pssh... I hear smooth bores are sub-sub-moa...

Really?!? I'm gonna pull out the cordless drill, sectional cleaning rods and 00 steel wool and get to work! Thanks Nick!

P.S.
I'm going to keep this fantastic tip on the down low...

Its got plenty of rifling, not sure how much throat is left but the damn thing still shoots well under 1/2 minute.

I seen it shoot pert damn goot a couple weekends ago. Although when you take 4 rounds in a magazine for a six round stage...the "click" on an empty chamber is deafening...

Thought it would be getting rebarreled by now...or are you going to do the hacksaw trick to check velocity loss?

Yea Craig, I am taking it in for a new barrel but plan on doing the hacksaw trick before I decide on a final length, figure cut it off in 2" chunks and test it (26" cut to 24, 24" cut to 22), I plan to go to 20" and see what the chrono shows.

No kidding. It lost 50 fps since the throat is so damn eroded, and I cant seat the bullet out any further put there is plenty of extra room in the case still. As I mentioned, its hard to take the barrel off when it is still shooting like the day to was new.

Anyone have a .223/5.56 headspace gage set I can borrow? I'm almost done with my build and I'd like to check it and make sure I'm good to go.

I have some loaded ammo you can just pull the trigger with...

Yeah about that... I like my face and hands the way they are, so uhhh... I'm gonna double check before we do that lol... After all I was the one who built it and looking at my track record with equipment and such... just sayin...

You're not really that pretty Nick...

Memorial Day, Acme shooting Trip - After Action Report

Great shooting up at Acme today. We had three all together, my buddy that lives near me dropped out last minute. From the Hide we had myself, Steveptr, and Sacshooter come out. We were able to get an early start on the day and despite the I-5 Skaggit river bridge being down, we made our time marks and were able to get out there a little after 9:00AM. Interesting story on the drive up. As we started up the forest service road, we encountered a Sherrif deputy in his car headed back down the hill and he stopped in front of us so we couldn't go up. So we stopped and just waited for him to get out of his car and approach. We were beginning to wonder what the deal was and if there was going to be some problem. He asked us where we were going and for what purpose and if the truck behind us was part of group. We mentioned to him we were going to do some rifle shooting and motioned to our gear in my truck and he said there might be a problem because the road was temporarily blocked. Through the course of the conversation he mentioned a fellow committed suicide by gunshot on the side of the road up a ways and that they were still processing the scene and didn't want cars driving through. He asked us where we were coming from and we mentioned Seattle and sout of Seattle and he was quite surprised we drove that far. He ended getting on the radio and was able to get approval to have us drive past the scene while they covered the car with a tarp so we wouldn't have to see it. I thought that was pretty cool of this deputy to help us out that way, so we ended up only having to wait about 10 minutes before we continued up the mountain road. The scene of this incident was about 100 yards south of normal shooting spot, right on the side of the road.

We decided to continue straight around the bend and start setting up the steel targets. We saw BigWheels targets out there near the normal places and ended borrowing one for the day, and I placed up two IPSC 66% targets at 750 Yards. By the way, I know about not setting up targets on the Y in the path and we placed the targets in the normal impact areas with the dirt birms in the back. We noticed while we were out there someone had cut down hundreds of small sapling trees which became an effective obstacle to easily walking from the road to the target impact areas. Next time we get a work party out there we have some work to do to clear a small walk way and also cut back the growth like we did last summer.

Next we came back down the road about half way and setup two 8" plates on posts (estimating at about 400-500 yards). It took us a good 20 minutes to walk these in far enough away from the road and trying to find a high elevation spot so we could see them from the shooting position. Ended up that when we got back to the shooting position and both of these targets were completely obscured because there is a small rise in the terrain and so - lesson learned here was that entire area is not useable for placing targets.

Finally we came back to the shooting position and we grabbed 4" round plates with hangars and walked the plates out to following distances, 82 yards, 120 yards, 175 yards, 220 yards. by 10:30 we were all setup and began to get our gear unloaded so we could start shooting. Luckily the weather cooperated early in the day. Cross winds were averaging about 2MPH and it was raining an almost impercetable mist. We got our environmentals and recalced our ballistics and started to send lead down range. Due to the light rain coming down, it began to be tough to spot bullet splash because there was no dust being kicked up. Regardless, we all had the steel targets singing. I believe Steve and I exhausted the ammo we brought and Sacshooter still had some rounds left, but the rain was starting to come down a little harder so we decided to go ahead and pack it up and retrieve our targets around 1:00pm. Even though it rained today, we weren't the only people out there shooting. We encountered someone using the small pit doing some plinking today. Also a number of people were out on their 4 wheelers and motorcycles.

Afterwards we got all packed up and were ready to head back to town, Sacshooter graciously offered to take our small group out to lunch so we drove back to Sedro-Woolley and spent a couple of hours talking guns, politics, and work while eating our sandwiches. Defintely a good time. I look forward to the next outing.

Not a bad day after all. I'd like to know if you found any of my targets already set up, or were they still hidden where I leave them? The last couple times I was up there I found one of my targets @ the 750 spot was standing for all to see when I got there, & was angled for a spot way farther up the road from any we use. I don't know who it is, but I'll probably find them some day. The angle they're shooting at it has no back stop, & is right inline with the trail down to it! I found bullet "snakes" all over the trail down there. Need to get that handled!

We found two of your big square targets up at the site, but they were taken down and placed off to the side like in the leaves/brush. So it seemed like no one had touched them since you last used them. We also found a spray can of paint up there, wasn't sure if you left that there or not, so we didn't touch that.

I have a set, swing by or let me know when you are getting off work. I will likely be in silverdale and brownsville this week.

Thanks for the write-up! I had a terrific time as well. I really enjoyed meeting two new folks that share my passion.

Regarding the deputy, it's really nice to see another example of law enforcement working with folks. He was going home after a long night and it would have been really easy to send us packing. Instead he wanted to make sure our long trip didn't go to waste.

Extremely nice of the Deputy given the circumstances. Unfortunate circumstance though...

I was thoroughly shocked when he let us pass by. He was on the radio for what seemed like 5-10minutes with the other officers. I had a great time thanks for the invite! Hope to do it again sometime.

I want to let everyone know that at the next monthly match or possibly the one after I'll have an impromptu prize/swag table. I was on the phone with some people and asked if they'd be willing to send some stuff and they said yes. Nothing fancy, but everyone should be able to get something. :D

I had one stop & bs with me for a few while I was shooting @ the 920yd tgt. He wanted to make sure I had a good backstop for my shots, & once I told him all was well he asked how far it was so I told him the range & let him look through the spotter. He was visibly surprised by the 6 rounds in center mass on my silohette. He just said have a nice day & drove the road.

He (like everyone) is welcome to come out to the practical rifle shoots at Upper Nisqually.

For those not on the email list, starting in July 2013, the matches will be changed to the first saturday of each month. The match in June is still on the 3rd saturday.

That means matches on June 15, then 3 weeks later n July 6th.

Thanks Kevin, unfortunately I will be over at the memorial match that day, July is out, hopefully August I can get a chance to come back down there.

yeah this is terrible, looks like i may be out of town for the next two matches (june and july) :( what a sad start to summer!!

All first time shooters have to complete the safety briefing/orientation that begins at 0830. The match starts at 10:00, and costs $20. Orientation takes 6-12 rounds more than the match does, and the round count varies for each match.

Anyone wanting to be on the email list and receive courses of fire and other relevant info should send a short request to get onto the mailing list to [email protected].

No bullets with any ferrous content are allowed, so check all your ammo wsith a magnet prior to the match.

For now, the matches are limited to 15 shooters, and reservations (guaranteed spots) are received by sending en email of our intent to attend the practicalriflewa address. If you no show after saying you will be there...well, that isnt cool because it means someone else didn't get to shoot.

Upper power level are cartridges like 30-06, 8mm Mauser 308, 6.5x55 Swede, 303 British, 7.62x54R and similar powered rounds.

I hope this helps.

Fedcop,
I will put you on the reservation list. I haven't put out the course of fire yet, and here is who I have spots for:

1. Steve M
2. Kevin D
3. Travis R
4. Ed M
5. AtOne
6. Mike W
7. Ryan B
8. Jason G
9. FedCop
10. steepdiver (Joe)
11. flashfire

At this rate, it will probably fill up fast. If I don't get to shoot because the match is full, that would be great. Sure, I would like to shoot, but I would be very pleased if I don't shoot because we have enough other interested shooters.

I picked up a box full of golf balls today...about 250-300 of them. They should make fun targets for the matches. Now I have to figure out if I can get a sheet metal like screw into them to tie a chord/string/fishing line onto.

Day off from work today so we decided to visit Acme for some pistol and carbine practice at steel plates (Buy W-W Targets). We noticed a full size box spring mattress dumped about 40 feet from the 750 firing spot. That was the only trash we saw after exploring the usual shooting locations. Unfortunately we did not have room in the truck bed to hall the mattress out. Or come to think of it, maybe someone from the hide left it up there for some additional comfort while shooting prone...

2 words... drill press... I have access to a couple, but you'll need to bring them up here.

Any of you guys that wanna carpool to the memorial match, im heading up from tacoma and should have atleast 2 extra seats in my jeep.

The practical rifle match at Nisqually scheduled for 15 June is filling up, but there are a few spots left. Here is the current reservation list:

1. Steve M.
2. Kevin D.
3. Travis R.
4. Ed M.
5. Eric B.
6. Mike W.
7. BGE541
8. Ryan B.
9. Jason G.
10. Fed cop
11. flashfire
12. Joe W. (Steepdiver)
13. John F.
14. Brian (FedCop's brother)

If the match gets filled (15) I will be happy to let someone have my spot..I can always shoot after the match.

I just sent the tentative course of fire to Kevin D. to see what he thinks of it. We are thinking about using golf balls (1.625 inches) at distances under 100 yards, and may be trying the pallidin scoring system just to be different.

Edited on Sunday about 11:00 AM to add BGE541. I put him in my #7 spot, so there is still room for another shooter. Don't be shy, as putting someone in my spot simply means attendance is going well, and that pleases me greatly!

I thought I'd have my precision AR15 build finished by then, but I just discovered the "intermediate" tube a guy sold me is actually a mid-length, so I won't be able to get the right gas tube until the 12th. I won't have time to get out and get some dope for it or tune the gas so I'll be ROing and bringing goodies.
