Although I wasn't able to see you guys stretch out your long guns, I was graced with watching some interesting pistol shooting for sure.

After the "load and make ready" command, I received the strangest looks for asking you guys to re-holster. Buzzer went off and brains and boogers flowed from everywhere. The greatest part was the end for sure at the fault line, re-holstering a safe clear gun was ok, but the fastest guys just set them down and moved on to the rifle problem. I did see some amazing shooting and a couple of yard sales, and by far the fastest ones were the ones who went 1 for 1 on the pistol. Also, there was a top 10 finisher who just shot "strong handed" and set his rifle down where he needed to. I did notice a lot of slings were not tight, with the rifle loose and swinging while the shooter was engaging pistol targets which greatly enhanced the pistol times substantially.

The most popular carry for the rifle was muzzle down, which in turn scraped (with suppressor) every big rock and got caught up in the bushes as well. I would say a third of the shooters carried muzzle up which was a better choice and they deployed their rifle much faster as well.

Everyone had a chance to spot the rifle target, it never moved, and a good 50% of the shooters got to the end and could not find it. It seemed hard for the ones who struggled to find it, and reference it from where they were in relation to their surroundings . It was not hard by any means, and if anything we moved you right to it. The spacial awareness of most of the shooters in relation to where the target was located was very evident. The others struggled and were scanning way too fast with their rifle.

The rifle was exactly 235 yards away. 3 hit from prone, before plowing their way through the weeds, a bunch made hits from kneeling and sitting. But for sure the best shots were the "well aimed snap shots" hit or miss. As well as 4-5 guys shooting off of sticks.

So in the future, treat the pistol stage like any another stage. Just because it's pistol with 1 rifle shot (or more) doesn't mean it's going be any easier. This stage could have been the determining factor for a substantial jump in the scores. I would say the most popular pistols were the Glock, Sig and the M&P. Some STI's, 1911 SS's and 1 Ruger.

Pistol shooting is even more perishable than rifle shooting by far. In the future I would recommend some dry practice, and knowing where your mags and how they are faced on your person. Sure running a 4 pound trigger on a pistol, might be easy...but the transition to your rifle always makes things interesting. And again, the guys that did well, streamlined their gear, and only took what they needed. Even 200 rounds of pistol shot before the match would make a huge difference.

I had a great time with everyone, there were a few issues I caught, but overall you guys were super safe and a blast to be around.

Thanks again for the help in tearing down, I greatly appreciate it.

A1

Jimmy

Jimmy, just have to say again how much I enjoyed shooting A1. I was there early on the last day, so you had your routine down, but also you weren't showing any boredom or repetition fatigue. That's pretty amazing. Yeah, it was a game, and I don't like timer games that don't emphasize hits to finish, but it was really fun anyway. I didn't know where the target was prior to getting through the stage, and I think it took me at least 8 seconds to locate it staring into the sun. I felt that it was actually a pretty easy target to spot, given the possibilities.

Stock: AI
Bottom metal: AI
Optic: Premier 5-25x56, gen 2xr
Rings/Bases: Seekins
Trigger: Jewell
Rest/Prone: Harris bipod (6-9), accushot rear pod
Rest/Supported: Primos Sticks (Needed Tripod!)
LRF: Leica Geovid
Handgun: G34

Highlight: Getting to shoot with some fantastic shooters, and not only seeing how the shoot - but how they solved problems.

Worst moment: Missing tons of targets on the first two days was bad enough, but missing easy targets on Saturday sucked. But, it helped be figure out that I had a scope problem. Which lead to - crap, I've been shooting this summer with a bad scope...are you kidding me?!! I felt like a total idiot.

Protip: Agree with Jesse, don't worry about targets you can't find. Shoot the ones you can. I need to get better at finding ways to stabilize the gun in difficult positions ie get a tripod, longer bipod, bigger rear bags, etc. There were many stages that required shooting over bushes etc. and I was not prepared. Also, if you forget your elbow pads the Douglas Shopko carries girls volleyball kneepads. Both stylish and functional:

Sounds like a great competition. Sorry I couldn't make it this year.
Last year I used a carbon fiber monfrotto tripod with a Hog Saddle that was very useful instabilizing the weapon on unconventional shooting surfaces.

Highlight: Hit 10 targets in a row the 1st day with winds 20-25 gusting to 45. Last day of the meet I made a 1200yd first round hit.
Worst moment: Had multiple jams on the pistol course and finally had a head seperation leaving the case in the chamber. Tip bring and use the ammo you practiced with.
Protip: I am not a pro. This was my first match and I learned alot. My rifle was more than capable but it was me who was not prepared.
I needed a longer bipod, needed to practice more from uncomfortable shooting positions. Don't due all your practicing from the prone position.
Shoot the targets you see, confidently and forget about the time. If your always thinking about the time you will be under too much pressure.

Handgun: Sig Sauer P226 9mm
Highlight: A couple, first, not zeroing a stage, and then being one of only 4 people to first round hit a target over 1150 yards.
Worst moment: Smoking a stage, being in a great rhythm, and so excited I hit a target I saw most competitors missing that I forgot to dial for the next 2 targets. I realized this with one 2nd round shot left at the last target. I left 2 easy point on the range. Stupid...
Protip: I am far from a pro, but am a seasoned competitor. The best piece of advice I can give is to forget all the small stuff, and all the gear and just shoot. When you are on the clock, have a plan and execute it. Dont sweat the small stuff. Hit the targets you know you can, and get the points. And lastly, have fun...

Jimmy, your stage was rad! I smoked through the pistol then wasted probably 40 sec. on the dumb rifle target...... Stupid. I slung rifle across my back w/ muzzle up.

LRF: Swaro 8x30

Highlights: Winning a SureFire can in the raffle (so awesome!), scoring 7-0 on my very last stage (C3), it was a rad first rifle match for me! Oh yeah, and this weekend happened to fall right between my bachelor party and wedding; just got back from honeymooning!!

Worst Moment: Meh, it was all awesome. I probably should have done better, but could have done much worse. F the wind on day one on E&D on the first day.

Picture: B3, I got to the top of that hill fast and was somehow still smiling! Think I scored 6-0 as an added bonus too!

Tips: It's just a match, have fun! Listen/talk to the shooters around you, and trust your data.

I actually forgot

Best Highlight was Smoking Bass Ackwardz in the pistol after he assured me he would be Smoking Me!!!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... Thats what I get for opening my mouth... But George beat me with a gun that I tuned the magazines for...so I still won :D

Worst moment(s): Repeated jams from both rifle and pistol. Primer was backing out of DPMS and jamming the bolt and the trigger. Really dirty ammo out of the Kimber.

Pro-tip: I'm far from a pro, but as a first time competitor, work on fundamentals and wind shooting for sure. A competition is not the time to experiment with new equipment, KISS principle rules!
