The practical rifle match at Nisqually scheduled for 15 June is filling up, but there are a few spots left. Here is the current reservation list:

1. Steve M.
2. Kevin D.
3. Travis R.
4. Ed M.
5. Eric B.
6. Mike W.
7. Anton G.
8. Ryan B.
9. Jason G.
10. Fed cop
11. flashfire
12. Joe W. (Steepdiver)
13. John F.

If the match gets filled (15) I will be happy to let someone have my spot..I can always shoot after the match.

I just sent the tentative course of fire to Kevin D. to see what he thinks of it. We are thinking about using golf balls (1.625 inches) at distances under 100 yards, and may be trying the pallidin scoring system just to be different.

If you have a slot for my Brother, Brian he wanted to shoot again as well.

I thought I'd have my precision AR15 build finished by then, but I just discovered the "intermediate" tube a guy sold me is actually a mid-length, so I won't be able to get the right gas tube until the 12th. I won't have time to get out and get some dope for it or tune the gas so I'll be ROing and bringing goodies.

Dude, that sucks. You should take that mid-length gas tube and attempt to beat him to death with it! J/K

Added Fed Cop's brother Brian. I don't care how the reservation info gets to me..signing up others is fine, as long as they show up.

There is still room for two or three more.

Unknown,

Id like to attend on the 15th if there is room. I attempted to email the link provided but I got pinged an 'email address invalid' message in response. Look forward to shooting with you guys again.

Thanks,
Reed

Thanks unknown, im excited to see what a golfball looks like after a .308 blasts through it at 2600 fps. Should be fun.

BGE541,
Got you on the list.

Fed Cop,
I still have to do testing to make sure it is safe to shoot the golf balls. I will afix them to a chord in hopes that they spin around rather than being launched. If the caretaker hit a golf ball with the rotor of a 22 horse power mower, it could really be dangerous to anyone in the way of the ball's trajectory. So the chief RO asked me to test things for safety...not an unreasonable request. I like that although they asked me to do testing, they already said they will accept my results if I say it is OK. That is cool because some clubs would be looking for a way to say "no" rather than being willing to accept the results of testing.

My last club was often of the mindset of "Don't bother us with facts, our minds are made up." At least Nisqually is keeping an open mind...much to their credit.

I have hit unsecured golf balls with a 308, and if you hit them right, it looks like they will land somewhere between Jupiter and Saturn. Usually, they only go 2-20 feet, but every once in a while.....

So I will do some testing very soon. If anyone is off work during the week and is interested in helping with the testing, let me know. I would like to go out on Monday or tuesday this week, around 9-10 AM.

If they are hit @ the right angle they can be launched with a hefty velocity. A hit center mass will just blow right through. Of course I have never seen one come back towards the shooter so as long as there is no-one down range should be fine. Expect to lose some.

The issue with the golf balls isn't loosing them as I got about 275 of 'em for $30. The safety issue is if they go all over the range and the caretaker launches one when it goes through the riding mower, it could hit someone, or break a window. So I have to test and see if my chord attachments hold well enough so we don't launch them. The last range where I shot golf balls was in a huge gravel pit, so it didn't matter if someone got a golf ball in their gravel delivery.

After fruit like local apricots and plums, apples and so on come in, I will contact the local corner fruit merchant for the ones they can't sell. Then use those as targets, and let the deer clean up the range.

You could use ping pong balls instead. About the same size without the mass. And they will move more in the breeze for a more challenging shot.

It isn't how far they launch, it is the possibility of the mower throwing one that we missed during cleanup.

I have thick .75 inch sheet metal screws and am trying both 550 parachute chord, and some heavy nylon chord as is used in either heavy window blinds, chalk lines and similar things. IIRC, it is around 40-60 pound "test" lime. It is quite strong for it's thickness. I will soon learn if it will be strong enough to hold the balls when they take a solid hit.

I would love to call in sick tomorrow and test this out with you! I would rather be out shooting than working any day of the week. Too bad I have to be able to pay the mortgage.

A 175 .308 at 50 yards with 2,446 ft/lbs of energy my bets on the bullet making the ball fly ! Would be fun to test for sure though.
BTW a golf club to ball has about 75 to 150 ft/lbs of energy ;)

Atone and I discussed some ideas for rules for the upcoming match. We agree that no one should be able to shoot poorly, and place well based on a fast time...so modifications to the penalties to prevent such a scenario will be in place.

Here is the list of people who will be shooting so far:

1. Steve M.
2. Kevin D.
3. Travis R.
4. Ed M.
5. Eric B.
6. Mike W.
7. Brian (fedcop's brother)
8. Ryan B.
9. Jason G.
10. FedCop
11. Flashfire
12. Joe W. steepdiver)
13. John F.
14. BGE541
15.

The match was full, one fellow cancelled, so we still have a spot open. If you want to shoot with friends who are already on the list, let me know and I'll see if I can get you in somehow.

Any of you guys that wanna carpool to the memorial match, im heading up from tacoma and should have atleast 2 extra seats in my jeep.

Hippy. I'm heading over Thursday night or Friday morning (early) to help set up. When were you hading over? If we could carpool that swould be great,if not I'll see you there. Look forward to shooting with you. Dj

Went to visit my folks this weekend. They live a couple hours away in the boonies. I've got a nice place where I can shoot as far out as I want to. Really nice, nobody around, just me shooting with my Dad doing the spotting. Took my 308 bolt and 260 semi out to 1150 (had to use the reticle to get the 308 out that far). 2 liter pop bottles at 850 yards are fun reactive targets, the one at 1150 survived though as there was a lot of wind blowing. :)

That looks amazing! My dream is to own a piece of property I can shoot out to over 1K on. Thanks for sharing the pics

SLM9s,

Nice spot to shoot..If you want to take some steel out there to shoot some time, let me know. The steel won't wear out from being shot on, and I would rather it get some use. You are welcome to use it.

AFTER ACTION REPORT: (golf balls)

The testing today shows we are a go to shooting golf balls for the match. I put them at 44 and 83 yards and shot them with a 308 firing 175 Sierra's at 2667 FPS. A good center hit just makes 'em spin around the cross bar 4-6 times until they bleed off enough energy to settle back down. One got a hit about .25 inches from the edge and showed a crack, but the other balls showed very small holes, and it looks like they will take a considerable number of hits before they "expire". I have plenty made up though.

Slm9 that really looks like a fantastic place to get some practice in, pretty awesome !

Unknown good job on the golf ball testing, Now lets put a couple at 200 and 300 yards for bonus points ;)

That is an interesting idea. How about something like a 10 second "bonus" if the ball is hit, and a 10 or 20 second penalty if it is missed? We could quickly find out who has enough courage and confidence to take the shot. I will readily admit that I wouldn't take the shot. It is a 1.625 inch target.

It is an idea that I am receptive to if there is enough interest in it. It would be easy to put them in the target racks, and I have about 40-50 already made up.

The golf balls I put in front of a box trap indicate that even when the golf balls are simply set onto a wire stand, the bullets I used (175 SMK) pass through and keyhole through the box.

Now we are talking! I am putting Eric's name in the hat to shoot one of those.

We also have the 3x6 inch diamond, and the 2x3 inch rectangle "mini" targets. If there is interest in using those as bonus targets, they would be easy to bring along.

When I said "Bonus" targets I meant like if you finish hitting your designated targets you can go for an additional time bonus after that. Really hate the idea of penalties for missing as the miss already doesn't count for anything and also why keep people from trying something challenging by hammering them with points lost for giving it a go.

If you make it that far let em give it a shot.

Need to put one at 550 for Travis though ;)

I guess the time required for the extra shot would be it's own penalty in any case, so I can go either way. Does anyone have a preference for golf balls, or the mini steel targets as the bonus targets? We can adjust distance, points, or both to make it interesting. Golf ball at 200, and/or mini steel target at 300..

I know atone is interested in this, and I am OK going either way...what does the rest of the group prefer?

Sounds like a lot of challenge and a new dimension to the game, anyhow I'm down. My only concern would be making the bonus so big that just hitting that could make an overwhelming change to the scoring. AS for what and were I would say balls at 200, small plate at 350, and a final bonus plate at 550. Maybe a rule each bonus could only be hit once during the match.

I concur, and particularly that no one shot should be disproportionately weighted. Folks should be encouraged to take the tough shot. I also agree with AtOne regarding penalties.

Unrelated question: What is the altitude at UN? I played around with Google Earth and can't figure out how to extract that information - user error I'm sure.

The altitude at UN is 810 ft according to the toppo map a have access to.

If any one knows any one looking for a tac driver of a rifle I have one that I'm putting up for sale.
Remington 700sps in 308win all done and ready to go. It's on waguns.org or seattle guns as well I may list it up on here if I don't get any bites.

I'm going shooting at Nisqually tomorrow morning. If anyone else wants to go let me know. I am a member so I can take a guest or two with me.

I'm going shooting...I'm not going shooting...Make up your mind ;)

Use what ever is easiest for targets is my choice !

Adding golf balls, or mini steel targets onto the stands we will already be putting up will take about 30 seconds more time, so it isn't any problem to put up both. I will bring both to the match.

I like the input, and agree...especially that a bonus should not be able to make an enormous difference in match outcome. Although it is often the case where one very good, or bad shot by any competitor makes a big difference in where they place in the match, I think the bonus shot should be helpful, but not a match deciding shot

Looks like I wont be going shooting after all, I just got asked to work tomorrow.

That's OK.... you don't need the practice. In fact don't even look at a rifle until the match on the 15th. All the better for the rest of us if you even forget what one looks like until you open your case again...LOL

Nevermind... After scouring the floor 4x for over an hour I finally found it...

Hey Guys!

I got a nice surprise today! In my job, we're constantly given incentives by various manufacturers to entice us to sell their stuff to our customers. These "incentives" usually take the form of hitting a sales goal by a certain date and are usually structured so as to be just out of reach. I've won a couple over the years, but most of the contest prizes are pretty lame i.e. "win a trip to our factory in $hi+sville, Austria for 5 days (small print: includes two days of travel),... Bleh! However, one promotion that came up at the beginning of the year had one of many options for various Gift Cards, one of which was for Cabela's. I marked on the form that I'd like my prize, should I win one, to be for a Cabela's card and forgot all about it. Well, it turns out that I sold a ton of this particular companies stuff this last quarter (not on purpose) and won $700.00 (!) in Cabela's gift cards!!! Whoohooo! I'm thinking of all the various things I'd like to get, but am wondering if there's something I might not be thinking of or missing out on. Any suggestions? Here's a list of a few things I'm thinking:

1) Down-payment on a Bushnell HDMR 3-21x50 with H59 reticle (don't need it, but always wanted to play with a Horus,... Look out Palladin matches!)
2) GoPro-HERO3 Camera system with various accessories (would be fun to get some live-action footage of stuff)
3) Down-payment on a DPMS AR10 in .243,... (ooooooohhh,... nothin' more fun than a semi-auto laser)
4) S&W M&P Shield in 9mm (concealed carry)
5) Down-payment on Leupold Mark-6 1-6x20 (for my AR)

I've got a good range-finder, spotting scope, etc. What would you do at Cabela's with $700.00 burning a hole in your pocket?

Ry

I've been in the same situation as we get Cabelas gift cards at work too. I tend to load up on reloading components. Cabelas pricing on Lapua brass is pretty good - .308 brass is on sale now.

Congrats and happy shopping!
