Having made a decision on this I am now posting. The laser cut foam is among the accessories that trickled in after the rifle arrived. The foam does not fit the rifle. Every dimension is either too tight or too generous. Ultimately it is the lack of protection for the scope and the, in my view, excessive removal of material to make the rifle fit that require this foam to be scrapped. I will start over with the uncut piece of foam that the rifle was packed with

As it came

Butt stock area requires extra material to be removed on all sides

Scope relief is excessive.

The cut for the barrel channel is several inches too short

CaseBarrelChannel_zpsc24ccd5c.jpg

The angle for the bolt handle is for a different bolt. Relieving it to accommodate the bolt handle results in a recess about twice the size required. It is also cut a few inches too long, maybe for a magnum length bolt.

For the amount of money that a rifle like that costs, you would think that they would put some details into their work. From everything that has been posted (this thread and others), there is clearly a complete lack of anything that resembles professionalism on their part. Hell, they can't even get the case right. That's piss poor for a "custom" gun shop.

I'll do my part to ensure that no one I know buys their rifles. I would hate to see anyone else go through something like this.

shit happens in shipping departments in any company, you just happen to get the case that was ment for the 12 inch barreled "super TR deluxe" that comes standard with a 5-32X56 Countersniper with integrated green laser illuminator

No doubt, just a slight mix up at TR. This foam was cut for the gun VJJ is talking about or for the Kel-Tec KSG with night vision for extra long range sniper style overwatch/assault type operations. Yep, I'm thinking this case was obviously meant for one of TR's many operators that get the first class treatment. Clearly not meant to even be seen by a lowly customer paying a mere $8,000.00 with a one year wait.

This is a small company. It's not Walmart!!!
how many employee's do they have? maybe 15 at most?
I am sure the shipping department is a guy name Rob.

RedDirt, 18 months (556 days) for delivery of the rifle, 21 months (652 days) for the last of the accessories to roll in. I did provide my correct address, preferred dealer's FFL, and t-shirt size and color in a timely fashion. I never did get the t-shirt referenced below. Neither tan nor black.

Did you contact them about the poor fitment of your hard case and why it took them 21 months to have a "laser" cut that out?

I would imagine he was a little shocked the case made it to him much less that it was in one piece and actually had foam in it.

I'm sorry it turned out this way for you Moses. I have had long waits for stuff in this industry but always received what I had paid for, you clearly did not. I'm glad Mark and the guys at A0 were able to salvage what had been done.

Yes. As to the foam fit, TR delayed shipment of the rifle until the foam was available from their supplier. I had been notified that my rifle was ready for shipment. A few days later when I inquired why it had not been shipped the absence of the foam was a reason given for the delay*. Similar to the UNS issue cited previously, TR was not going to deliver laser cut foam that was inferior in quality and that meant waiting for suitable product. I agreed to take delivery of the rifle prior to the foam being available. As such I accepted the risk of it not fitting, ex post facto.

Regarding foam availability and the 21 month delivery time; this item was among several supplier issues that were cited. On the front end vendor slow downs delayed rifle build/delivery time. On the back end it was insufficient product availability that delayed delivery.

*After being told the rifle was ready for shipment this is not the only explanation for delay I was given. The first was the $195 payment for the hydro-dip.

Not trying to shit on your misery here Moses but, I think there's a lesson learned here.

A lot of guys like TR.net and a few others mentioned on the hide, recently are only going through their suppliers for parts...If the supplier doesn't have the part...They just sit with their thumbs up their asses...I'm sure they're too busy to do the leg work but, if you're willing to drop 8k on a rifle, why don't you do the work, for them?

It seems like the best idea at this point is to shop around and then when you've received all the parts, send it in for the build.

No offense meant to you, again mate but, I can find every single part on your list, with the exception of a few, in stock right now...

Substitute their action for the Stiller, SA is in stock in a few places...Hell, even buy the reamer, PTG has a few in stock...Manners T4a is likely a 16 week wait BUT, Stockies has a few in stock...Barrels we could do all day, know of a few places we could order a Bartlein or a Brux, have it by Thursday...Triggers, again, all day long, Jewel/Timney...

The action is $995.00, the reamer is PTG @ $140.00, the Manners from Stocky's is $700.00, A Bartlein will run you $350.00 and they're in stock...A good trigger will run you $150.00-$300.00...Could even get you a Pelican with pop-out foam by Friday from Amazon...

You would literally have //EVERYTHING// for your rifle by Friday...For under $4k...Then just find a smith worth a few shits and send it in...No wait, you saved yourself about $3k when all is said and done...And they still made you the SAME RIFLE that's on the site...

I just don't understand why some of you guys pay to wait when everything is actually available to YOU, right now...And if it's not available this week, Manners was at 8-12, could always get a Brux...We could talk options all day long...

TLDR: Instead of dealing with assholes like TR.net, order your own parts and send them in...Saves you time, a headache and someone else's bullshit excuses.

What a great post "captain hindsight." I think you are missing the point of this thread. I'm sure you would be singing a different tune if this happened to you. If the turds at TR.net delivered an exceptionally well built rifle, the wait, though excessive, could maybe be justified.

It actually has...So, +1 for the being the internet badass. - Want a cookie?

I understand the point of the thread, it's that TR is shit. It's that TR does shit work. It's that Moses got screwed over...TR is shit shit shit.

What wasn't actually posted in the //ENTIRE// thread was the fact that any single one of you could have done the leg work yourselves and for the click of a button, had every single item on your list within a business week...Saved yourselves a 6 month "wait" and actually still used TR.net or whoever the fuck you wanted to assemble that rifle.

Instead, most of you wait a year? 16 months? 24 months? For what? Convenience? Ignorance?

Well, let's un-fuck the ignorant.

Oh wait, I guess we discussed that earlier in the thread...Oh wait, we didn't...Not a once...Which is why I said something.

Being ignorant and spending an absorbent amount of cash + a 24 month wait could have been avoided completely by informing others and educating them.

So let's educate them rather than go full retard, yeah?

Continue on, Internet Badass.

No offense taken. Perhaps being a bit redundant, Masked brings up a few points worth revisiting:

I do not mean to convey misery. I hoped to have kept my feelings out of it. If I did plop them down in this thread it would be something quite different from misery. But that is not the point.

I have paid for this experience and I hope that others may learn from it.

Since ordering the rifle from TR I have had three other builds by two well regarded smiths, on this forum and elsewhere. I have a fourth build upcoming. Masked is spot on with his pricing. My last build took about 6 weeks to gather the parts from ordering to having them in hand. The one before that was about 4 weeks. With these three rifles I have enjoyed total build times averaging around 3-4 months. It has been my experience that good shops do not mind if you walk through the door with a box full of parts. The best of all worlds is to have a builder within driving distance. I have found mine and will stick with them.

If you're new to all of this please spend some time reading reviews, talking to the various builders, ask questions, and get some quotes. You will learn much by going through this process and you won't have even spent a dime yet. Steer clear of anyone who advises you otherwise.

The TR Chimera action is in fact a Stiller. Just a private label. You won't have to look far and wide to find them in stock. For all the other parts you will find that many shops either have them on hand or have them on order.

Finally, I did not say, or mean to imply, that the build was in any way delayed by a disruption in the TR supply chain. That is what TR said.

I read through the thread a few times before posting and while the subject, itself, was brought up a few times, nobody had really made a cohesive post about it so, thought I would.

I had the same issue with a company I shall not name...In fact, I have quite a similar situation going on with Barrett and a product I've already paid for...however, we won't go there right now...But, I feel your pain.

<~ Guilty of the same shit...I did it twice before I learned my lesson. - Had to have both rifles re-barreled...

At this point in the game, I think you're better off supplying your own parts...Be it GAP or your local Smith...Take control of the situation and google it...Would save some of you a year wait for 5 minutes of effort and a little plastic.

I think the focus is a little more on warning people to not use TR.net. Regardless of the items you purchase ahead of time. I agree that buying your parts and giving them to the smith is wise advise. However, in this thread... The point is even if I were to do that I would not be able to avoid that crappy work they do.

The praising reviews are rampant outside of this forum unfortunately. Is it possible for that many stupid people to be involved in rifle reviews? Or many they all got telepathically controlled by professor x, obi wan kenobi, or Rooney himself. Check out this article here. 3" group at 1000 with a 308 with factory ammo. Now I am not the guru when it comes to world records, but to the best of my knowledge, the world record 1000 yd group is about 1.5", shot with 338 necked down to 308, firing a 240 gr SMK well north of 3000 fps. In conclusion, they are selling us that on an ordinary day, their rifles are so magic that average shooters are shooting .308 out to 1000 with factory ammo, and rivaling professional shooters with calibers designed to go the distance? The article puts it out there so nonchalantly, like it was no biggie. Blows my fucking mind.

I am shocked at all the articles and television spots that are hailing this company as a top level smith service. It looks like their "custom" work has become more than they can handle with any amount of quality control.

Those Bastards!

That YouTube Tactical Rifles 'out of the box' video is priceless.

I know it!!

I would have never imagined if that rifle on the video was shipped to me, the box better be torn to hell and back to make me think it was drug by a truck. A smith better not let a rifle come out his shop for 8K looking like that and looking for repeat business.

Interesting comments from the YouTube comments against the bad from the box vid: (feel free to delete this post if it is not allowed to be posted here)

Okay, one thing about Tacticalrifles, when they build you a rifle, the serial number is nice straight and has the guy's name who its being built for used as the serial number. So John Smith (if this is his real name), the serial number would be S1234567891 NOT G654617?? like a store bought from Walmart. I have 3 rifles made by Dave's team and I have killed many people with them in Afghanistan & Iraq, I am returning from my 8th deployment with a M40A5 that they built.

I bet my life on this rifle and year after year, the TR I paid $7,000.00 for has saved my ass. 15+ years in, active duty. I think this video needs to be checked as well as this guy's head. If the rifle was screwed up, call Dave Rooney up, explain that there are some problems and I am so sure he will take it back and repair it. There is a warranty on it you know. duh!!

My favorite part of that article:

"The biggest complaint that I hear from our friends at Tactical Rifles is that they have to deal with vacillating wannabes who wish they could order a custom rifle but don’t follow through with actually ordering one. "

The term "article," loosely describes what's in that Guns America link. It reads more like a paid advertisement that you find in the gun rags. Tailored for the unsuspecting that are taking advice from Guns America articles. The part about dealing with "wannabes," clearly shows that these guys have nothing but disdain for their customer base.

I know little of this Rooney guy, but I suspect he is someone who decided to start a rifle building business with little to no rifle building experience himself. All of the reputable shops that come to mind are one man owner-operator companies, or at least started out as such.

You don't actually believe that lack of available parts is the reason that TR.net fails to deliver rifles by the quoted delivery dates, do you?

If you do, can I interest you in some nice property in Florida, or maybe a bridge?

Oh yeah. I'm sure if you showed up on rooney's doorstep with a cardboard box full of parts, he would have that rifle done that afternoon.

Man, you should wait about three or fours years and then start bombing them with phone calls and emails wanting to know where your T-Shirt is.

Sorry to hear about this Moses. There is only one possible explanaition for what happened. Mr. Rooney was showing his employee's that he could in fact assemble, and cut foam for a customer's rifle blind folded. I'm sure this build is in no way the norm that leaves the TR facility.

I would take that T-shirt if it ever shows up, wipe my ass with it, stuff it back in a box and ship it back to them, ATTN: David Rooney

All of those in favor of going to the Tactical Rifles.net booth and starting a Q&A session? ;)

I guarantee he is gonna have security there, and you will most likely be escorted away from the "VIP". We all know how he handles criticism.

He won't say anything or talk to you. He is right across from Kasey B @ B&T as well last year we were 2 feet from each other at a big Harris Mag party. He even spoke to someone I was with, never said a word just looks at you sideways.

if you go I will stand with kasey and get footage.

I just want to inquire about his: build process, grounds for hiring an employee, return policy, CS policy, his personal inspections, and how many times does a builder have to F*** the goat to be fired?

Is that so much to ask?

You intimidate him Frank. He knows how many people you reach in this community and if you really chose to… you could end his little parade with a few short videos on his rifles.

Here is my correspondence with this idiot in april 2010:

David, I am, for the lack of a better term, quite pissed off. A friend of mine bought a rifle from you guys maybe last year, but never got around to using it yet. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago, and he showed me the rifle for the first time. So he asks me if I wanted to take it home with me to break in for him, and I gratefully accepted the offer. He pointed out to me an area on the stock that had merely rubbed against another rifle, and the paint was chipping off badly. I took a look at it, and with nothing more than finger pressure, I was able to scratch off the paint. Being that I do some small gunsmithing and stock painting as a hobby, I offered to paint the stock for him the right way. So I took the rifle home with me, and began working on it. The first thing I noticed while disassembly is the death grip that the floorplate and the action had on the stock. The recoil lug was wedged in the bedding so tightly that I could barely take the barrel out of the stock, and the DBM was a challenge too. As I began prepping the stock for painting, I rubbed it down with some MEK beforehand. The ENTIRE stock stripped clean of the cheap krylon that was used to paint this stock with little effort. In a few minutes, I had the entire stock stripped down to the molded in GAP camo used by McMillan. Here is the picture:

I successfully painted his stock properly, and my paint ain’t coming off without using serious authority. I had thought I rectified everything, until I gently rubbed the barrel, and the paint began flaking off there too. I originally thought the barrel was bare, but it is apparent that someone decided that krylon was a good choice to paint the barrel as well as the stock on a custom rifle. So now I have more work to do to fix something that should not have been this way in the first place. Oh, and another thing; whose idea was it to bed the scope base with loctite? I noticed it seeping out the sides, and when I removed the base, the loctite was still wet. Bedding a base with loctite is something you do as a quick fix for your own rifle, not a customer’s custom rifle that cost in excess of 5k to build. If you are going to pay attention to a detail that would be considered by many as mundane, do it right, not some half assed bang up job. It would have been better if it weren’t bedded at all rather than using loctite. He is lucky to have a friend like me, as I fixed that issue too with some devcon putty.

I took the rifle to the range, and it shoots just ok in my book. It isn’t what I would call a one hole gun, but it does group within an acceptable range for a factory rifle. I just hope that the bedding job you guys did is not stressing the hell out of the stock, otherwise I have yet more work to do, and I am tired. I feel that you have cheated my friend with some low level labor disguised as a premium service. If this is the way things are done at your company, well all I have to say is that you won’t get any endorsements from me.

Sincerely,

Mike Palma

Man, the more I think about this the more it pisses me off and it isn't even mine. I am going to order a rifle from Rooney tomorrow. When we get to the deposit I am going to jerk off into an envelope and mail it to him.......

I will do the same but im gonna drop some an explosive shit in the envelope
