Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

I believe the only hand guard change between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 is the change from key-mod to m-lok. Otherwise aren't they the same?

The big hand guard change, where they changed the way it attached and dropped the top pic rail, occurred between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 RPR models.
I believe it has a black nitrite finish on the bolt too.

No, the new Gen 3 is a completely different handguard in all aspects.

I'll post some pics to enlighten tomorrow.

BTW, shot six different types of ammo and 3 out of the 6 shot .5-.25 MOA, I'll post pics of them as well. It really liked the Hornady 120gr Amax, and Winchester 140 Match

So I got my RPR rebarreled finally. It only took a torch; pb blaster; a vice a 3/4" wrench and 6' breaker bar; and the bench started to lift before the barrel broke free. After hradspacing it and getting it back together, I tried to chamber one of my old handloads. I think it’s safe to say my old barrel was.... well broken in, as this is as far as it would go.

Did you try the 140 ELDs? Mine shot them 1/4 or better all day if I did my part. I shot 100 that day and it was the only box ammo I planned on shooting but I might need to at least have some stashed away in case I get lazy in the reloading room. Only downfall was that it was a little slow out of my gun. 2640 avg according to the magneto.

No I couldn't find any in stock at my local stores, but will definitely get some when I see them in stock and I will be conducting another Range Report when I do, and take her to distance, especially since I know what to feed her now.

As you can see, it did not like the Atomic 142 SMK or the HSM with the 140 hunting Berger's. But damn it really likes the Winchester 140 Match Ammo. All of the are 3rd groups.

That's .25 MOA from the OEM Barrel!! That's pretty fucking awesome. And I'm sure once I get 100-200rds down range the barrel should settle in and tighten up some. If you notice in the pics I haven't even bothered to install the Timney Trigger yet, so thats a completely bone stock rifle, shooting Factory Ammo. The only parts I'm waiting on now is the MINOX ZP5 MR4 From CS Tactical.

BTW: I would like to give Mike at CS Tactical a HUGE Thank You, he has been absolutely wonderful to work with and definitely a stand up guy...

Thanks Mike....

Going to go ahead and say that the other two shots are me not the rifle/ammo. When I set the scope up I was kind of in a hurry and needs to be back a little and after some shooting I need to play with butt pad a bit. I def wasn’t 100% comfortable behind the gun and it still shot pretty damn good.

I’ll add my review of my new RPR a Barrett Brown 6.5. I added the new Nikon FX1000 and a Harris bipod.
If I do my part it can shoot. I used Hornady brass and 140 grain ELD with 40.9 grains of IMR4350.

LOL at "only took a torch; pb blaster; a vice a 3/4" wrench and 6' breaker bar".

Swapping my RPR barrel from 308 Win to 260 Rem this week -- I think I'm going to have my local gunsmith take care of this project, my workbench isn't heavy/sturdy at all...

Funny part; that was at the smith; and it lifted his bench before it broke loose.

Wow. I've always wondered why they are torqued on so hard from the factory... It's gotta be a legal/liability thing or something like that, right?
Thanks for the info.

According the smith it’s the hardest barrel he’s ever changed; but we think the threads got rusted due to some of the conditions i shoot in.

Anyone on here have a Melonited/Nitrided/QPQ barrel on their RPR?

Hell no! They just torque the shit out of them!

It took a 4 foot pipe and heat to remove the muzzle brake on mine. I called Ruger and they say they are torqued to 15 foot-lbs. I guarantee you mine needed better than 10x that to remove the brake.

Received the Paper City handguard and installed it. Super easy. Their handguard nut just threads on to the barrel nut and doesn’t need to be timed at all. I’m very happy with the way it looks, and it seems like a high quality piece. Time to do a duracoat job on the barrel now...

That’s looks pretty sharp. I really like the way that looks. I have my factory rail on still. But that has my interest

^ Thanks. I first saw it when that guy from Major Pandemic did an RPR build and used it. I think I took my factory guard off and installed this one in less than 5 minutes. If you go to papercityfirearms.net you can get it for $195 free shipping.

If you use an mlok rail and don’t already have one, you can get one from them or elsewhere. It doesn’t include the rail.

I want to know how many curse words have been uttered while trying to remove an RPR barrel or RPR muzzle break.

I ned to install a TBAC CB break, but the RPR break gotta come off first...

^ Its probably in the four figures. Just put that thing in a vise, heat it, and break it loose with a long screwdriver

Anyone know how the hybrid muzzle brake compares to the better after market brakes available? I've watched tests of brakes being measured by ruler on a bench of recoil reduction. Haven't seen the stock hybrid brake tested yet. Would hate to replace if the hybrid was as good as the others.

I just ordered a scope from the SWFA Tax Day sale 2018 for my 308 Ruger; it is the 3-15X42 FFP scope (Mil-Quad reticle). With the order I went ahead and picked up the Butler Creek caps, SWFA sunshade, SWFA med rings, and a Mildot Master card.

Link to sale: https://swfa.com/taxday2018?dm_i=3YFN,24KC,11R9IJ,858P,1

Yesterday I picked up an Ergo Grip from Cabellas. Their selection was a slim, but since I received $20 credit for getting a credit card, the grip only cost $7. Worth a try.

^ Ive been extremely happy with my SWFA. I ordered it mil-quad as well with the butler creek flip ups

Anybody using Tenebraex scope caps? Looking for some quality caps and these are one of my picks but wanted to hear some thoughts from personal use...

I didn’t think that the barrel was that bad. The good news is once you take the old barrel off and put liberal amounts of anti-seize on the threads it is not as much trouble removing the second time. I used a bench vice with two blocks of wood, tape around the barrel, and Resin. I also had a nice long cheater bar.

Well My rifle now looks like the tin-man after using the anti seize

^ I think if you put the action in a vise instead of the barrel and turn the barrel nut, the nut will turn off with the barrel. Order a new nut from Ruger and just put the new barrel on with the new nut. Fuck it....

I didn’t have to do anything. My barrel nut came loose during a shoot one day when I got the rifle really hot. Put it back to 70 ft/lbs

Mine did too LOL.
BTW Lefty is right, I put the action in the block with installing the new barrel, and it was easier to grip due to the facets.

They are very nice caps. I use a set on my hunting rifle. Leupold alumina are the best but not universal. AAdmount makes some good ones too.

Thanks. I agree on the Leupold, I have a set on my leupold scope. But I have an Athlon on my RPR so I’m looking for other quality options. I’ll check out the AAdmount ones, I’ve read some things on them from forum searches.

I have a RPR in 308 if I buy a barrel in 6.5 do I need a new bolt or is it the same and my P mags only say 308 on them also do I need different ones also thanks

How are you guys attaching qd mount on the rail for sling? What came with gun or using aftermarket qd mount?

Which side? I’m right handed. Have seen where guys are using opposite sides. Back attached on left and front on right side.

Thanks

Personal pref. I run right side on the buttstock and left side on the Handguard. But I’ve also done it the opposite. For me they need to be opposite because when in patrol Cary it allows for better control so the rifle isn’t flopping around, but it’s not like I’m doing this everyday. I don’t hunt with my RPR so really it’s just about looking cool and in the end that’s all that matters.

I finally got a chance to shoot my new Gen 3 6.5CM now that my scope arrived (vortex Viper PST 5-25-50 FFP Gen2) . I chronographed Hornady factory 140 gr ELD-M and several handloads. The factory box states 2710fps but i got an average of 2650. is this normal or does my chronograph lie? My best handload (so far) is 41.8gr H4350, Fed 210, with the 140 ELD-M @ 2675 <0.5 MOA
