Seekins HAVAK Precision Rifle

Too the 300 out again today.
175 Barnes LRX.
It’s a start

I fired this group free recoil.

Out of curiosity anybody seeing better results with a heavier hold vs free recoil with this weapon?

My sendero likes to be loaded into the bipod so I’ll try that technique next time.

Are you letting that 300 slam into you’re shoulder ?

Pretty close to it. My shoulder is against it but with zero forward pressure and with left hand controlling the rear bean bag. Like I said some guns work with it and others hate it.

Has anybody tried different DBMs? Looking at the grayboe stock and DBM.

Yes, it doesn't work on the Grayboe. I've tried three different 700 stocks and four different DBMs, INCLUDING Seekins own DBM (the new version) and they don't work on any of the stocks I have other than the one the HAVAK came with. I had to shave down the mag release for it to work but now every round I shoot the mag drops out. Not sure if I took it down too much, but I'm beyond frustrated at Seekins. I've contacted them multiple times and they don't seem to care other than telling me that I should take it to a gunsmith.

Built one of these for a friend the other night for a friends seekins havak and was thinking of making a run of them and selling them wondering if you guys would be interested in them. Haven’t come up with a good price I’m making them on manual lathe not Cnc. Bolt knob conversion for havak. Length of center would be determined by customer.

I would be interested in either the bolt & extension or just the extension only.

Interested in the extension

Ok if you would like one cost is 37$ shipped in the US for the extension. They are made of 303 stainless 5/16x24 threaded the one above is 1.37 for length of mid shaft and a o.d of .428 Please specify your length you would like of mid shaft if you would like a different o.d let me know these will be made per order and are raw stainless no coatings. Please private message me for orders and payment info which will be PayPal friends family. Please remember the sizes you give me will be what is made. If you would like combo with knob the knobs are Aluminium and turned to match shaft o.d. and will be 60$ for combo shipped. Making knobs on lathe no mill so no exotic fluting patterns.

Will have a review out shortly.

For you guys with the 300 mag, what bullet would you recommend working with for a rifle primarily used for mule deer/elk?

What chassis are you running and did you need to mod It? Also I would like an adapter and that length would be fine.

That sucks! I wonder is a whiskey 3 would work with AW mags.

S

Reloading or off the shelf ?

Either/both. I irony have any brass right now so I will grab a few boxes to try then go to loading (unless some factory ammo is so good that its not worth loading.

That is a mpa chassis this isn’t my gun it’s a friends he wasn’t comfortable with the length the added length also made the bolt throw easier and quicker for follow up shots.

200gr accubonds as others have said. From what I see a variety of game has been dropped with Accubonds . If those don’t shoot to you’re liking , I would try 190gr SMK. A thread on here has SMK game kills that look extremely promising for deer and elk.

For you guys with the 300 mag, what bullet would you recommend working with for a rifle primarily used for mule deer/elk?

Berger 215 or 212 ELDx were my goal but they didn't shoot well in my first Havak. Second havak came with good proof targets using federal GMM 190 SMK and a mediocre one with 215 bergers but i'm still hopeful i can find a load it likes.

I didn't buy a 300 mag with 4" of magazine length and a 26" barrel to shoot a bullet with a mid 0.5's BC.

I want to shave a little weight off my HP1 and make it a little "custom" as well. Anyone have any thoughts on dimpling the barrel? I would send it to Marvin P @ Nefarious Arms.

I have a Noveske barrel dimpled by Marvin, and I think THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!

Thank you for the replies to suggestions for ammo/load development for my 300. Below was what I received from Seekins:

Comment: Good morning,
I purchased a Havak in 6.5 a year or so ago, and recently received another one in 300. The 6.5 stock is to low for me (I have not shot the 300 yet).

Any suggestions for a new stock for the 6.5. It will be used for some steel on the range as well as a hunting rifle.

Suggestions for bullets to start load development for the .300? This will be a hunting only rifle.

Thanks!

The havak features a basic Remington 700 footprint and may require a bit of modification. I would recommend looking in to a custom stock from manners or mcmillan in a different style that may better fit your needs. We only recommend factory loaded ammunition so I cannot give an exact recommendation for load development at this time for your 300.

Sounds like lawyer speak: "We only recommend factory loaded ammunition"

Still loving the way the Seekins Havak Pro HP1 Is shooting.

140gr ELD-M
42.2gr H4350
2.227” CBTO (.020” jump, about 2.845” COAL)
CCI450
Starline brass
2880fps

The wide round on the first group was my first shot of the day, I should have warmed up first. It’s .45moa not counting that one, but oh well. The other group was the last one of the day. My can was a little warm and mirage was being a bitch.

I would go a manners elite as they have a specific inlet and mini chassis just for the havak.

Took it back out again after work for a quick followup group. Nice little group. Right on top of the other group from last weekend. This is the Barnes 175 LRX over 80.5 grains of H1000 and FGMM primers. This time I went with a more firm hold off a front bag with a bean bag rear (vs using a loose hold off a bipod last time). Has same POI but felt better with firm grip and really pushing chest into stock. I’ll do some 5 shot groups when I find the ball park load. It doesn’t seem to like the 200 grain accubonds nearly as much. Probably try the 212 ELX also.

I received my bolt extension from @Mississippi327. Took a little bit of heat and a pliers to get the old one off. Cleaned up the red loctite and then secured the new extension and knob. It’s perfect. The added length really gives it a better feel cycling and the two tone look rocks.

Thanks again!

Got my 300 View attachment 7005626View attachment 7005627View attachment 7005629View attachment 7005630rigged out.

Here’s a tidbit I was not aware of.
The long action only takes the Carbon fiber magazine unless you completely swap the bottom metal and fit a different one for it.

I was rather hoping to use the Pmag 5L Magnums as well in the current configuration.

Oh well, it still looks damn good. I’ll get a range report by Saturday with 2 loads I have already.

What kind of bipod adapter are you using?

The old style stud swivel should be closer to the muzzle. There is only one on the rifle. Couple inches further back is the recessed cup for the QD push button type flush mounts and then samestyle on the butt of the stock. Are yours reversed?

Ok, I thought so just wondering if a QD version was out there I already have one for the stud mount.

Has anybody tried different DBMs? Looking at the grayboe stock and DBM.
I have done this and works well , All I had to do was shim down the bottom metal using a washer on the front and real action screws and modify the cheek rest to allow the bolt to move fully to the rear . other than that is works great .

Spent the weekend with Max ordinate Academy in Apple Valley Ca. I used my Seekins Havak HP-16.5 CM in a Grayboe Ridgeback stock .
Amazed at the accuracy of this rifle,Made consistent hits to 1340 yds. I was shooting Nosler brass with RL-17 powder and Nosler CC 140 grain bullets .
If any of you have the opportunity ,go train with Tyler and Max Ordinate Academy . Mississippi327 you bolt handle was a great improvement for the rifle !
