To start... the SPLC was actually founded with the noblest goals. They provided legal aid for mostly-black Southerners who were being denied their civil rights up-to and including being lynched... and helped recover damages and even put some worthless Klukkers in jail.

They have since morphed into what amounts to a private NKVD, whose wholesale lists of 'those who opinions they don't like' are now classified as hate groups...

Well, it gets worse, but I am not the guy breaking the story here. This is well-worth a read. Especially the parts about how the media is now weaponized against political opposition (there's a surprise) and how the SPLC is also creating targets for Attorney's General in states.... who are using their power to attack.... political opposition. Keep in mind that it would be very easy to designate, say, a website and all its denizens as a hate group. I think the SPLC has attempted to put the NRA on its list of hate groups. You could easily belong to one.... and not know it!

I have always seen the resemblance of the current day SPLC to an organized crime syndicate. Mike Vanderboegh did excellent minute by minute coverages of their shenanigans on his blog when he was still with us. They are like Tammany Hall in every sense of the word, relying on a system of internal payoffs, bribes and coercions of smaller groups to do as they say. I believe the SPLC has a bit different history than the ACLU (that you are addressing here). My dad went to high school with the founder, Morris Dees. They were in the same FFA class/club. Around here, the story is that Dees was a self-made "millionaire" (i.e. wealthy) by the time he graduated from U. of Alabama. He somehow had access to student records (I don't know under what authority), and he started a business where he contacted parents of enrolled students, and made arrangements to deliver a surprise birthday cake to their student's dorm room on their birthday. This was in the '50s, so it was a pretty novel idea at the time and it took off like wildfire. I applaud his entrepreneurial spirit, but have always wondered how he got access to that privileged information and whether or not it was an invasion of privacy.

In any case, it is the belief of many of those who knew him at the time that he was never a "true believer" in the Civil Rights era, but saw it as an opportunity to make massive amounts of money. Thus, he started SPLC, and it made him extremely wealthy. He has been constantly criticized for decades by the local media in Montgomery, especially later on, for wild exaggeration and demonization of whomever they had in their sights, and extreme self-promotion. Essentially a game where they have no qualms about totally destroying someone. Whether or not they deserve it is beside the point, only that they can sell it. As such, he never really was a rabid progressive. As the organization began to evolve into that territory, he, being a self-promoting capitalist, didn't really fit in anymore although he was good at playing the part in public.

The above is mostly my opinion, based on local history and stories from those who were close enough to know a few things.
